Furniture moving from Saudi Arabia to Algeria only works by sea, in containers, and that is how Gulf International Shipping runs it: our team takes your furniture apart and packs it at home in any Saudi city, an enclosed truck carries it to Jeddah Islamic Port. The container then sails up the Red Sea and through Suez to a hub port in the Mediterranean, where a feeder ship picks it up for Algiers, Oran or Annaba; we then truck it to your door in your wilaya. The whole trip takes roughly 5–7 weeks when the container is yours alone and 6–8 weeks when you share one. At Gulf International Shipping a living-room set costs from SAR 870, a bedroom with its bed and wardrobe from SAR 1,100, an entire household from SAR 4,140, while a container all to yourself begins at SAR 5,520 if it is 20 ft and SAR 7,360 if it is 40 ft.
Most people who ask us about this route are Algerians going home to settle after years of working or studying in Saudi Arabia, taking a household they are used to: bedrooms, a salon, appliances, and cartons of clothes, books and kitchenware. Before the price, they want three answers. Will the furniture clear customs duty-free? How long will it be on the water? And what happens if the container is late and the paperwork expires? This guide answers all three with numbers, and explains how we build your inventory while we pack so the shipment does not stall at the Algerian port.

Who ships furniture to Algeria? Three situations, three customs outcomes
Before we measure anything or pick a container, we ask one question: what is your status when you land in Algeria? Algerian customs looks less at the furniture than at its owner and the reason it is coming in, and the answer changes the paperwork, the duty and even how the inventory should be written.
Returning for good
An Algerian registered with the consulate, resident in Saudi Arabia for at least 3 consecutive years, moving back to settle. With a CCR, used household goods enter duty-free within the legal ceiling.
Sending part of the home
An Algerian staying on in the Kingdom who sends a bedroom or appliances to the family home. The CCR does not apply, and customs works out the duty from what the goods are and the state they are in.
Graduating student
A student who has finished studying in Saudi Arabia. The same CCR route applies, with a lower ceiling than for employees.
A fourth case comes up less often: a non-Algerian relocating to Algeria for work who wants to bring furniture. Treatment depends on the residence type and employment contract, so we ask that client to check with the employer or a customs broker in Algeria first, and we plan the shipment around the answer. The physical move is the same in every case; only the paperwork and what is paid on arrival change.
Which route does your furniture take from the Kingdom to Algeria?
Thousands of kilometres and several borders lie between the two countries, and no regular removal trucks run that way, so any talk of “overland moving to Algeria” or “clearance at land borders” describes a route that does not exist. Here is the route as it actually runs:
- Home to port: the wrapped furniture goes by closed truck to Jeddah Islamic Port. Roughly, that is 80 km if you live in Makkah, 170 in Taif, 420 in Madinah, around 950 in Riyadh and a thousand kilometres in Tabuk.
- Eastern Province: loads from Dammam, Al Khobar, Al-Ahsa and Jubail travel by road to Jeddah Islamic Port, roughly 1,300–1,400 km; we do not load Algeria-bound furniture at Dammam port.
- Saudi export: we file the export declaration on Fasah, then hand the box to the shipping line ahead of the cut-off.
- Sailing and transshipment: the container crosses the Red Sea and the Suez Canal to a hub port in the Mediterranean, where it waits for a smaller feeder ship to the Algerian port. There is no direct line from Jeddah to Algeria, and this middle stop is why the transit is long.
- Algerian customs: the CCR and inventory are presented, or ordinary goods are declared and duty paid.
- Delivery: a truck from the port to your address, then unloading and assembly.

The hub changes from one shipping line to another and from week to week, so we do not promise a fixed transshipment port. At booking we tell you which line we chose and the expected sailing. We check sailing schedules before every shipment and book lines that run from Jeddah through Suez, because a missed feeder connection is what stretches an Algeria transit most.
Approximate furniture moving prices, Saudi Arabia to Algeria
We reviewed the prices competitors publish for Algeria from seven Saudi cities, then pitched each of our rates roughly 8% under the cheapest published figure for that item. Figures are “from” prices, calculated from Jeddah port to the Algerian port, with inland haulage from your city and from the port to your wilaya added by distance. Algeria usually costs more than Tunisia or Morocco because shipping lines charge more to Algerian ports.
Note: by sea, expect roughly 5–7 weeks between your Saudi front door and your Algerian one with a private container, or 6–8 weeks when sharing; urgent items flown by air take 3–7 days.
Single pieces and appliances
Shipping only a few favourite pieces, or things that cost more in Algeria? Each is priced individually in a shared container:
Any Algerian duty is excluded, since you pay it to customs directly rather than to us as freight; they also exclude marine insurance and clearance in Algeria, which we price for you based on the value of your goods and your file. Parcel, goods and equipment rates are all in our page on shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Algeria.
How many weeks does a furniture move to Algeria take?
Some adverts claim furniture reaches Algeria in one or two weeks, a figure that ignores transshipment and clearance at both ends. The real timeline has five stages: 1–3 days inland to Jeddah, 3–7 days for export and cut-off, about 10 days sailing to the hub, 5–12 days of hub wait and feeder, and 4–10 days for Algerian customs and delivery. By origin city it looks like this:
Groupage is slower because the container does not leave Jeddah until it is filled with several customers’ lots, and it is opened and sorted in Algeria before delivery. If you are heading to Ghardaïa, Ouargla, Laghouat or Adrar, add 3–5 days by road from the port. All times are approximate; we send the actual sailing date once the container is booked.
20 ft, 40 ft or groupage?
A 20 ft container holds about 33 cubic metres inside and a 40 ft about 67, though packing and gaps between pieces mean you never use all of it. In our experience a flat of two or three bedrooms, appliances included, normally fits in a 20 ft, and a villa, a big house or a flat with a car calls for a 40 ft. Groupage suits one or two rooms with cartons, or someone sending selected appliances and belongings.
A worked example shows when your own container pays off. Take a flat with two bedrooms (SAR 2,200), a salon (870), a dining table (410), a fridge (640), a washing machine (550), two air conditioners (1,010), a TV (365) and ten cartons of clothes (595). Priced piece by piece, the starting rates add up to about SAR 6,640, while a private 20 ft box costs from SAR 5,520 and swallows all of that plus the kitchen and book cartons. So once the pieces approach the container price, we recommend a dedicated box: it is faster and your goods are not handled alongside other shipments.
When is groupage enough?
If your furniture fills less than about a third of a container, or you are not in a hurry and can accept 6–8 weeks, groupage is cheaper. Send photos of your rooms to WhatsApp 0568829975 and we will estimate the cubic metres before the survey.
The valued inventory: the document your exemption rests on
For the change-of-residence certificate, the Algerian Embassy in Riyadh asks for an inventory of personal effects showing the condition and value of each item. The consulate stamps and signs it, and the customs officer at the port checks it against what is in the container. Anything missing from the list may attract extra duty or be held, so we treat the inventory as part of the packing, not a separate chore.
In practice: we number every carton and every piece as we wrap it, write a short description against each number (“wooden bedroom: bed, wardrobe and dresser, used, good condition”), and photograph large items and appliances. You receive the draft with the same numbers, add the values and take it to the consulate. When the container is opened in Algeria, the officer finds that carton 37 is line 37 on the stamped list, and the inspection moves quickly.
- State the condition honestly: used, new, or barely used. New items are treated differently, as explained below.
- Do not lump everything into one line: “miscellaneous household goods” invites questions; “12 cartons of used kitchenware” does not.
- Use sensible values: the combined value of your goods and car must stay under the exemption ceiling.
- Keep copies: one with you, one with the broker in Algeria, and an electronic copy with us.
The change-of-residence certificate and your furniture: conditions, ceiling and deadline
The change-of-residence certificate (CCR) is the document that lets a returning Algerian bring used household goods in free of customs duty and all taxes. You get it from the Algerian Embassy in Riyadh, or from its Consulate General in Jeddah when your registration is held there. According to the embassy’s page the conditions and documents are as follows; confirm them before shipping, because they can change:
CCR conditions at a glance
Consular registration; legal residence abroad for at least 3 consecutive years, shown by your Saudi iqama; and no previous use of the procedure. Documents: consular registration card, passport copy, iqama copy, inventory with condition and value, sworn statement, and the car invoice and papers if a car is included. Maximum value: DA 10 million if you are employed, DA 8 million if you are a student, with the car and belongings counted together. Issue takes about 3 days, and the certificate then runs for six months, never extended or renewed.
The number to plan around is six months. The shipment must reach Algeria while the certificate is valid, and the journey alone takes 5 to 8 weeks. So we suggest this order: we survey your home, estimate the volume and start the inventory draft before you submit your file to the consulate; you obtain the certificate; we book the container that same week and load straight after. That leaves a wide safety margin if a vessel is late or clearance drags.
The certificate holder is usually expected to attend customs formalities in Algeria, so plan to arrive a few days before the container. For a document-by-document walkthrough and what counts against the ceiling, read Algeria change-of-residence household goods.
Packing furniture for a sea voyage with transshipment
An Algeria-bound container is lifted on and off several times, in Jeddah, at the hub and at the Algerian port, and spends weeks at sea between Red Sea heat and Mediterranean humidity. Wrapping that would survive a local move will not survive this, so everything is packed to export standard:
- Wood and wardrobes: taken fully apart, every panel blanket-wrapped and film-sealed, corners protected with card guards.
- Glass, marble and mirrors: we build timber crates to size, since cardboard gives way under the lifting and stacking at the hub port.
- Chandeliers and ornaments: hanging parts removed, each crystal wrapped in tissue, and the set packed in its own padded box.
- Mattresses and sofas: sealed bags against damp and dust, then a heavy outer cover.
- Appliances: washing machines drained with the drum secured, fridges switched off a day early and dried, screens boxed in heavy-duty cartons.
- Inside the container: the heaviest pieces go on the floor, every row is strapped, and moisture absorbers sit between the rows.
For an average flat this takes one to two days with a full crew. Each piece’s screws and fittings are bagged, numbered and taped onto it, so assembly in Algeria is quick and nothing goes missing.
Which Algerian port suits your wilaya?
Choosing the right arrival port saves days and a long truck ride inside Algeria. We pick the port by your wilaya and by the sailings available on your dates:

Algiers receives the most feeder calls, so for the centre and Kabylie it is usually the shortest path. Oran is closer for the west, and the east is split between Annaba, Skikda and Béjaïa. When no early sailing is available to the best port, we tell you the alternative and compare waiting for the vessel with landing at another port and trucking the container.
Delivery and assembly across Algeria
Gulf International Shipping delivers to the door in every region of Algeria. In the west that means Tlemcen, Oran, Mostaganem, Chlef, Tiaret and Sidi Bel Abbès; in the centre Blida, Médéa, Tipaza, Boumerdès and the capital; in the east Sétif, Constantine, Batna, Annaba, Skikda, Béjaïa, Jijel, Tébessa and Khenchela; and in Kabylie Tizi Ouzou and Bouira. The south, including Biskra, Djelfa, Laghouat, El Oued, Ghardaïa, Ouargla and Adrar, is served by advance booking.
On arrival a truck takes the furniture from the port to your address, the crew places cartons room by room by their numbers, and beds, wardrobes and tables are reassembled. Older apartment blocks in Algiers and Oran tend to have tight staircases and tiny lifts, so tell us the floor and the entrance width before shipping and we will bring the right equipment.

Is duty charged on new furniture and appliances in Algeria?
The CCR exemption covers used personal effects listed on the inventory, within the ceiling. New items, such as an appliance bought days before you leave and still in its box, are dutiable under their tariff heading and carry VAT at 19%, although goods made in an Arab country may qualify for a lower rate if you attach a certificate of origin. Algeria also has a reduced 9% VAT rate, but it applies to specific basic goods, not usually to furniture or appliances.
If you are not returning for good, Algerian customs assesses everything you send by type, condition and value. Our advice: keep appliance invoices, remove the original packaging from used items so they are not treated as new, and avoid filling the container with identical quantities of one product that looks commercial, such as ten TVs or twenty new blankets.
Air freight for urgent household items to Algeria
Not everything can wait six weeks for the container: children’s school clothes, official papers and certificates, a laptop and work tools. These go by air. Air Algérie and Saudia fly nonstop from Jeddah to Houari Boumediene Airport in Algiers, as their schedules allow, in about 5–6 hours; consignments from Riyadh and Madinah connect through Jeddah.
Door to door, an air parcel arrives in roughly 3 to 7 days including clearance. The air rate per kilo to Algeria varies with weight, volume and flight, so we quote it on request; shared sea parcels start at SAR 92 (5 kg or less) and SAR 138 (a carton weighing up to 10 kg). See how booking works on our air freight service page.
Can I put my car in the furniture container?
Yes, and many returnees do exactly that: the car lashed at the front of a 40 ft container with the household behind it, or the car alone in a 20 ft with a few cartons. But the car only qualifies under strict conditions: it must not have reached five years of age, it must run on petrol, electricity or a hybrid system with no more than 1,800 cc, diesel is ruled out, and its value is counted inside the same CCR ceiling. Read the complete rule set in car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Algeria before you decide.
Items you cannot pack for Algeria
Algeria’s prohibited list includes things that look perfectly ordinary in a Saudi home, so we go through it with you before packing, not after:
- Alcoholic drinks and cigarettes.
- Explosives, firearms and ammunition; narcotics and poisons.
- Gold and jewellery; antiques and valuable paintings.
- Binoculars, GPS devices and antennas, which are classed as military-type equipment.
- Used or retreaded tyres.
- Indecent material or publications offensive to religion or the state.
- Medicines, books and magazines in quantities that may need clearance from the relevant ministry.
Saudi export rules add their own limits: no firearms, no antiquities and no subsidised goods. Ordinary mass-produced pictures and décor are not antiques, but describe them clearly on the inventory. Any doubt about a particular item? Check with us while the carton is still open.

The cheapest way to move furniture to Algeria
The lowest cost comes less from the cheapest quote than from shipping less and choosing the right method. These are the savings we suggest most often:
- Compare the pieces with the container price: once the total nears SAR 5,520, a 20 ft container is cheaper and faster.
- Leave heavy, low-value items behind: shipping large old wardrobes and worn mattresses costs more than replacing them in Algeria.
- Avoid the summer peak: most returning families ship in summer, groupage fills up and prices rise; autumn or early spring is calmer.
- Have the papers ready before booking: a late certificate means container waiting charges at the port.
- Pack the cartons yourself: packing clothes and books yourself and leaving only the furniture to us lowers the bill.
Mistakes that hold up returnees’ furniture at Algerian customs
- Shipping before the change-of-residence certificate is issued, so the container arrives without the exemption document.
- Booking late after the certificate is issued, until the six months are nearly gone.
- A vague inventory that does not match the carton numbers, or goods in the container that are not on the list.
- Putting a diesel car, or one older than 5 years, in the container in the hope of an exemption.
- Believing an advert that promises delivery in two weeks, then flying home a month before the container.
- Believing a firm that says “we pay your customs”; Algerian duty is paid to the customs administration, not waived by a shipping company.
- Hiding gold, binoculars or a GPS among clothes, which holds up inspection of the whole container.
Storage, insurance, tracking and payment
Storage: if your lease ends before the certificate is issued or before the sailing, we store the wrapped furniture in a warehouse and load it when the file is ready. Insurance: marine cover is available for whatever value you declare, priced alongside the freight. Tracking: you receive the container number and sailing date, and WhatsApp updates at every stage: Jeddah, transshipment, arrival and clearance. Payment: bank transfer, split into the instalments agreed in your contract.
