As a shipping company from Saudi Arabia to Oman, Gulf International Shipping picks up home contents, private cars, boxes and trade cargo from any city in the Kingdom and drive them through the Empty Quarter (Rub Al Khali) crossing, the only direct land border between the two countries, to the receiver’s door in Muscat, Salalah, Sohar, Nizwa or Ibri. A truck loaded in Riyadh or the Eastern Province pulls into Muscat after 3–5 working days; a Jeddah, Makkah, Taif or Madinah pickup needs 5–7; and loads from Tabuk in roughly 6–8 days. Gulf International Shipping’s cheapest line item is a small carton at SAR 46, SAR 1,100 to move a full bedroom set, SAR 1,840 to carry a sedan or SUV, and SAR 2,020 for the furniture of a two-bedroom flat.
Until the Empty Quarter highway opened, every truck heading from the Kingdom to Oman had to enter the UAE first and leave again through an Emirati–Omani border post, dealing with three customs authorities instead of two. That has changed. A new desert road of about 725 km now cuts straight through the sands from the Batha–Haradh junction to the wilayat of Ibri in Oman’s Al Dhahirah governorate, and from there on to Muscat, the Interior, Al Batinah and Dhofar. This guide is built around that road: how your shipment crosses it, how long it takes from each Saudi city to each Omani governorate, and what you pay in duty and VAT on arrival.
Quick facts

Which land border connects Saudi Arabia and Oman?
It is the Empty Quarter crossing. Saudipedia, the Saudi national encyclopedia, describes it as the only land border post between the Kingdom and Oman. It falls administratively under the Eastern Province and faces the Omani post of Ramlat Khaylah near Ibri in Al Dhahirah governorate. The crossing was built together with the road that links the two countries directly across the desert; it covers more than 4.4 million square metres, its freight area is sized for roughly 966 inbound and outbound trucks daily, and its passenger zone handles around 1,700 vehicles a day.
The Saudi road to the border is 564 km long and starts at the Batha–Haradh road junction, roughly 25 km from the Batha border post with the UAE. The first stage runs 319 km to the Shaybah field, the second 246 km from Shaybah to the crossing, with rest areas for trucks and cars along the way. Past the border, the Omani section runs 161 km to Ibri, and Ibri to Muscat is about 244 km more, close to three hours at the wheel. So Ibri, Yanqul, Dhank, Buraimi and Nizwa are the first towns our trucks reach after crossing, followed by Muscat and Al Batinah, with Salalah far to the south.

The crossing handles commercial traffic around the clock, though waiting time depends on congestion and the truck’s slot. Saudi rules oblige the haulier to reserve the truck’s arrival time on Fasah beforehand and to show up near it. On the Omani side, the customs declaration is cleared on the Bayan system through a licensed clearing agent. We walk through each step in our Empty Quarter border crossing guide for Oman shipments.
Does the shipment go through the UAE?
Normally, no. Gulf International Shipping trucks take the direct Empty Quarter road from every Saudi city. The older route through the UAE, meaning Batha, then Ghuwaifat, then an Emirati–Omani post such as Khatmat Malaha, Al Wajajah or Hafeet, is kept for specific cases: when the direct crossing is congested, when the load is part of a consolidated GCC truck that passes through the Emirates anyway, or for delivery to Musandam governorate (Khasab, Bukha and Dibba), an exclave whose only road access runs across Emirati territory. That route adds a transit declaration across the UAE, which means more time and more paperwork, so we only use it when it genuinely suits the shipment.
Wrong border names that keep appearing in adverts
Al Ruqi is on the Kuwaiti border, Salwa is on the Qatari border, and Ghuwaifat is the Emirati post opposite Batha. A company that says its truck to Oman “crosses at Al Ruqi” or “goes via Salwa” does not know the road your goods will travel. And on the Omani side the customs system is called Bayan; Fasah is the Saudi one.
How many days does a shipment from Saudi Arabia to Oman take?
Road transit to Oman is the sum of three blocks of time: the drive from your city to the border, the formalities on the Saudi and Omani sides, and onward distribution from Ibri to the destination governorate. The drive is close to fixed; distribution grows the further south you go towards Dhofar and Al Wusta; and the border is the variable part, driven by the Fasah slot, how quickly the Bayan clearance completes and how busy the lanes are. The table below shows the timings we plan with; treat the kilometre figures as rough, since they shift with the exact road and loading address.
Some companies promise Riyadh or Jeddah to Muscat in 36 or 48 hours. Simple arithmetic shows the problem: Jeddah alone is more than 2,200 km away, there is a border with clearance in two countries, and a heavy-truck driver cannot drive for twenty-four hours straight. That is why we give you a realistic transit time and tell you when the truck leaves, when it reaches the border and when it gets to Ibri, so you do not plan your move around a promise that will not hold.
A small shipment travelling on a consolidated truck may wait in our warehouse until the next weekly departure for Oman. Book a truck to yourself and it sets off the moment loading ends, with no waiting for other cargo. For light, urgent items, air freight remains the fastest option, as we explain below.
Approximate shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Oman
Our tariff was set by reviewing the rates competitors advertise for Oman from Riyadh, Dammam, Makkah and Tabuk, then pricing under them. In every cell, the lower number is where Gulf International Shipping starts; the second is where the same item usually ends up in the market when the load is bigger or harder to handle.
Note: trucks from Riyadh or the Eastern Province get to Muscat in 3–5 working days, 5–7 days from the Hejaz cities and Madinah, and 6–8 days from Tabuk, with roughly two extra days to Salalah; by air, allow 48–72 hours from pickup to delivery.
Starting price for each item
Most people who call us are not shipping a whole house. A student sends boxes of books, an employee moves a fridge, an air conditioner and a bedroom set, and a shop owner sends customer orders to Muscat. Hence the item-by-item list below; each figure already covers the road trip to the Omani address.
Why does the price differ between Muscat and Salalah?
Muscat is only about 244 km from Ibri, while Salalah lies in the far south, more than a thousand kilometres from Muscat, and the road there from the border usually runs through Adam, Haima and Thumrait across long desert stretches. That is why an online-store parcel starts at SAR 41 to Muscat but SAR 50 to Salalah, and heavy freight at SAR 5.5 a kilo to Muscat but SAR 7.3 to Salalah. Delivery to Duqm and Mahout in Al Wusta, or to Musandam, costs more than Muscat depending on distance, so send us the address and we will price the actual trip rather than give a generic estimate. Full city-by-city tables are in shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Oman.
Delivery across Oman’s governorates
Oman has eleven governorates, and the Empty Quarter road enters from the west at Al Dhahirah. The order in which the governorates sit along the truck’s route sets the order and timing of delivery, so we load each truck by governorate: goods for Ibri and Nizwa go in last so they come out first, followed by Muscat and Sohar.

In Muscat in particular, many residents live in towers and compounds whose management requires a lift booking and an access permit for the moving crew. Ask your building management for those requirements before the truck arrives and send them to us, and we will arrange delivery and assembly around them. In Salalah, demand rises during the khareef season, so if your shipment is bound for Dhofar at that time of year, book early.
Moving furniture from Saudi Arabia to Oman
Furniture heading for Oman crosses hundreds of kilometres of open sand. In summer the heat inside a truck box on this road is intense, and fine dust finds its way through any gap. So our packing here differs from a move across town: a layer of bubble wrap on wooden and glossy surfaces, then corrugated board or moving blankets, then a final stretch-wrap that seals the edges against dust. Electronics and screens each go in their own carton, and glass and antiques go into wooden crates where needed.
The Gulf International Shipping crew dismantles bedrooms, wardrobes and flat-pack kitchens such as IKEA units, numbers every part, bags the screws with each piece, and photographs the contents before loading so you have a visual record. In Oman the crew reassembles everything at the address and installs air conditioners on request. We also load the truck with heavy pieces at the bottom and against the front wall, because the Empty Quarter road is long and mostly straight but winds between dunes often enough to shift an unsecured load.
An expatriate moving to Oman to live there for the first time, and an Omani citizen returning from abroad, can bring used furniture in free of duty under clear conditions. Those conditions require a detailed English inventory and residence papers, so we build the inventory with you while packing, not afterwards. Details are in furniture moving from Saudi Arabia to Oman and in Oman used household goods customs.
Car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Oman
Gulf International Shipping moves cars to Oman by three methods: a multi-car open trailer, the cheapest; a single-car hydraulic flatbed; or a fully enclosed transporter that keeps high-end, sports and classic models out of the sun and blowing sand. Sedans and SUVs start at SAR 1,840, and luxury or sports cars in an enclosed carrier at SAR 4,140.
Before choosing a carrier, make sure the car will be accepted in Oman. Omani import rules differ from those of its neighbours, and these are the key ones:
- Age: Omani customs accept used private cars under 7 years old, used trucks and buses under 10 years old; cars that have reached 30 years need approval from the Directorate General of Traffic, and those over 50 are treated as classics.
- Export certificate: any vehicle arriving from another Gulf state must now come with an export certificate issued where it is registered, which in your case means Saudi Traffic; a clearance paper alone is no longer enough.
- Specifications: left-hand drive and GCC specs, and the vehicle must never have been badly crashed, burnt or flooded.
- Charges: duty of 5% on the car’s value, followed by 5% VAT calculated on value plus duty; a recently registered GCC car is assessed case by case.
- After arrival: Omani insurance before collection, then registration with the Royal Oman Police, with a technical inspection for older vehicles.
On the Saudi side, the owner issues the export through Absher, settles any traffic fines, checks that the registration and inspection are valid, and, for a financed car, obtains the lender’s release letter; we then lodge the export declaration on Fasah. Keep roughly a quarter of a tank in it, take out every personal item, and our crew takes pictures of all four sides before it goes on the truck. The full guide is in car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Oman.
Shipping cartons, parcels and personal items to Oman
A small shipment does not need a truck of its own. We add your cartons and bags to the consolidated load heading for Oman and charge by weight or volume. Small cartons start at SAR 46, jumbo cartons or bags up to 30 kg at SAR 138, while e-commerce orders of 5 kg or less cost from SAR 41 for Muscat and SAR 50 for Salalah. Heavier consignments start at SAR 5.5 a kilo to Muscat.
Write the receiver’s name, Omani phone number and city on every carton, keep each box to a weight one person can carry, and do not pack loose lithium batteries or liquids that are not sealed. A tip for anyone sending books, discs or films: put them in a separate carton, because media can be referred to Oman’s Ministry of Information for review, and keeping them apart stops the rest of your cartons being held up. More in cartons and parcels shipping to Oman.
Commercial freight to Oman: full truckload (FTL) or part load (LTL)
Traders have two choices. Part load (LTL) suits a few pallets and starts at SAR 780 a tonne. Full truckload (FTL) gives you a truck of your own that leaves as soon as it is loaded, starting at SAR 8,280 for a 20 ft container load. When Saudi-made goods carry a GCC origin certificate, Omani customs charge them no duty, although import VAT is still due on commercial consignments. Oman also applies the TIR international transport system, which makes it easier for sealed loads to cross.

We collect from factories and warehouses in Riyadh, Dammam, Jubail and Jeddah, and we carry dates, coffee, spare parts, foodstuffs and retail stock. Refrigerated trucks are available for dates and food that need a steady temperature on a long desert road. Traders have their own guide: goods shipping from Saudi Arabia to Oman.
Air freight from Saudi Arabia to Oman
Flying is the answer when the shipment is light and urgent: documents, spare parts, samples, permitted medicines, or personal items you need within two days. Oman Air flies nonstop to Muscat from Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and Madinah, with direct flights from Taif subject to the airline schedule, and SalamAir serves Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and Madinah and also flies to Salalah. Riyadh to Muscat takes about two hours and a quarter in the air, Jeddah to Muscat about three hours and a quarter, while flights from Tabuk to Muscat involve a stop.

At Gulf International Shipping air freight starts at SAR 41 a kilo for parcels and online orders, with pickup-to-delivery times of 48–72 hours as flights and clearance allow. Air cargo is billed on the higher of real and dimensional weight, so a large light carton can cost more by air than you expect; that is when road is the better buy. Can you ship to Oman by sea from Saudi Arabia?
For trade containers there is a sea route from Jeddah Islamic Port to Salalah port, which we book on request for companies shipping full containers to Dhofar. Household furniture, cars and cartons, however, travel by road through the Empty Quarter, because the truck delivers straight to the door and avoids extra days of port handling, unloading and reloading. We do not offer sea freight to Oman from the Eastern Province ports, since a truck from Dammam gets there faster and with simpler formalities.
Is there customs duty and VAT on shipments to Oman?
Yes. Oman charges 5% VAT and applies 5% customs duty to most new goods and furniture of non-GCC origin. The VAT base is the CIF value, meaning goods plus freight and insurance, with the customs duty added on top. Products of Saudi origin with the proper origin certificate are duty-free, but a commercial import still bears VAT.
To see how it adds up, take a brand-new appliance manufactured outside the Gulf with a landed value of SAR 1,000. Duty at 5% is SAR 50, and 5% VAT on the resulting SAR 1,050 which comes to SAR 52.50, for a total of roughly SAR 102.50 on top of the appliance’s value.
The used-furniture exemption in brief: it applies to Omanis coming home after living abroad and to expatriates taking up residence in Oman for the first time; the goods must be for personal use, not trade, and come from the country where the owner was living; and the owner presents a passport, ID card or residence visa with a detailed inventory. Cars are excluded, and shipments are subject to inspection. For the full rules see Oman used household goods customs.
Documents required for shipping to Oman
The thing that delays furniture shipments at Omani customs most is a thin inventory. Do not write “miscellaneous” or “personal effects” for a whole carton; write what is actually inside: clothes, plates, books, toys. Omani customs usually inspect household shipments in full, and an accurate description shortens the inspection.
Prohibited and restricted items for Oman
Omani customs have published a list of the main prohibited goods, and we add the items that come up most in household shipments. Check your belongings before packing, and if you are unsure about anything, ask us before it goes into a carton:
- Narcotics and psychotropic substances, explosives and weapons of every kind, including decorative weapons, swords and walking sticks that hide a blade.
- Any uniform or equipment that imitates military clothing, and toy guns that are hard to tell apart from real ones.
- Rifle scopes, night-vision scopes and stun devices such as tasers.
- Ivory, and counterfeit goods or goods that breach specifications or intellectual-property rights.
- E-cigarettes, drones and walkie-talkies, which need to be checked in advance.
- Books, films and software are subject to review by the Ministry of Information, and perishable food does not travel with furniture.
- Untreated wood in packing: wooden crates must be treated and stamped, and the crates we use are treated.

How is the cost of shipping to Oman calculated?
Our prices are built from clear elements, some of which you can control:
- Volume and weight: furniture is usually priced by volume, parcels by weight, and air by actual or volumetric weight, whichever is greater.
- Service type: shared is cheaper than a dedicated truck; dedicated is faster.
- Pickup city: Riyadh and the Eastern Province are hundreds of kilometres closer than Jeddah and Tabuk.
- Omani governorate: Ibri, Nizwa and Muscat are closer; Salalah, Duqm and Musandam are further.
- Services: dismantling and assembly, wooden crates, storage and insurance.
- Building conditions: upper floors without a lift, or a compound with fixed delivery windows.
A worked example: a family in Riyadh sends a complete bedroom, a fridge, a washing machine and ten cartons to Al Khuwair in Muscat. The bedroom starts at SAR 1,100, the fridge at SAR 550, the washing machine at SAR 460, and ten small cartons at SAR 46 each, so SAR 460; the total starts at about SAR 2,570 on a shared truck, arriving in 3–5 working days. If there is more than that, the two-bedroom flat rate starting at SAR 2,020 may work out cheaper than pricing item by item.
Cheapest ways to send goods from Saudi Arabia to Oman
- Choose a shared truck as long as your shipment does not fill one and you can work with the weekly departure.
- Cut the volume: sell cheap old furniture in the Kingdom rather than ship it, and send what is hard to replace.
- Combine small cartons into fewer large, well-sealed ones.
- Use the used-furniture exemption if you are a new resident, and prepare its papers so no duty is charged.
- Ship Saudi products with an invoice and certificate of origin so they enter without customs duty.
- Avoid the last week before holidays and peak seasons, when trucks queue at the border.
Common mistakes when shipping to Oman
- Writing just “Oman” in Arabic on labels and papers: «عمان» alone is easily confused with the Jordanian capital, Amman; spell out the Sultanate of Oman and add the city.
- Shipping a car aged 7 years or more: it will be refused at Omani customs and either sent back or stuck.
- Relying on a clearance paper for a car: what is required is an export certificate from the country of registration.
- A vague inventory: entries like “miscellaneous items” drag out the inspection.
- Shipping new furniture with its invoices as used: new goods pay 5% duty and 5% VAT, and hiding them causes bigger problems.
- Believing 48-hour promises: Jeddah to Muscat is over 2,200 km with a border between two countries, and an unrealistic promise wrecks housing and work arrangements.
Storage, tracking and insurance on the Empty Quarter road
Still waiting for the keys to your new place in Oman? Your furniture can stay in our closed warehouse in the Kingdom until you pick a delivery day. During the journey our team keeps you posted at each stage: loading, exit from the Saudi border post, release on the Omani side, and arrival in your city. On parts of the Empty Quarter road mobile coverage drops because of the sheer size of the desert, so our trucks carry tracking devices and we can give you the last known position when the driver cannot be reached. Cover is optional and priced on what the goods are worth, which we recommend for valuable furniture, cars and appliances.
