Gulf International Shipping handles furniture moving from Saudi Arabia to Oman door to door: we dismantle and pack your home in your Saudi city, drive it in a closed truck through the Empty Quarter (Rub al Khali) border crossing, the only direct land crossing between the two countries, and reassemble it in your new home in Muscat, Sohar, Nizwa or Salalah. Allow 3–5 working days to Muscat for a home packed in Riyadh or the Eastern Province, 5–7 for Jeddah, Makkah, Taif or Madinah, and roughly 6–8 for Tabuk. Gulf International Shipping’s starting rates are SAR 1,100 for a complete bedroom, SAR 2,020 for a two-bedroom apartment, SAR 3,220 for a whole house and SAR 46 for a small carton.
A family moving to Oman is not exporting goods; it is changing its place of residence, and Omani customs reads the shipment that way. Used furniture belonging to a foreigner taking up residence for the first time, or to an Omani citizen coming home from abroad, can enter free of VAT and duty when the conditions are met, while a brand-new sofa still in its box is treated as an import. So this guide follows the questions a relocating household actually asks: what the move costs, when it arrives, what customs will say about your belongings, how furniture survives hundreds of kilometres of desert highway, and how it gets put back together in a flat in Al Khuwair or a villa in Al Mouj.
Quick facts
- Border crossing: the Empty Quarter crossing on the Saudi side, facing an Omani crossing near Ibri in Al Dhahirah; the road from the Batha–Haradh junction to Ibri runs about 725 km (564 km in Saudi Arabia, 161 km in Oman)
- Transit to Muscat: 3–5 working days from Riyadh and the Eastern Province, 5–7 from Jeddah, Makkah, Taif and Madinah, 6–8 from Tabuk, plus roughly two days for Salalah and Duqm
- Prices: bedrooms from SAR 1,100, a two-bedroom apartment from SAR 2,020, a whole house from SAR 3,220, cartons from SAR 46
- Customs: used household goods of first-time residents and returning citizens are exempt on conditions; new non-GCC items pay 5% duty and 5% VAT
- Air freight: for urgent items from Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and Madinah airports to Muscat International, from SAR 41 per kg
- Service: dismantling, packing, wooden crates, loading, Fasah and Bayan clearance, delivery and reassembly in every governorate

How long does furniture take to reach Muscat and the rest of Oman?
Every removal truck bound for Oman ends up on the same road: the desert highway that leaves the Batha–Haradh road junction and runs 564 km inside the Kingdom to the Empty Quarter crossing, then another 161 km inside Oman to the wilayat of Ibri. What separates one Saudi city from another is the distance a truck covers before it reaches the start of that highway. Riyadh trucks head south through Al Kharj and Haradh, Dammam trucks usually pass Al-Ahsa, and trucks from the Hejaz and Tabuk come through Riyadh first.
The times we quote cover loading day, the road, both border posts and delivery inside the Sultanate, not just driving. Driving from Riyadh to Muscat alone is about 15 to 18 hours, but a truck also needs driver rest, a booked Fasah slot and time for inspection and clearance on Oman’s Bayan system, which is why the honest figure is counted in days. A company promising Jeddah-to-Muscat furniture in 48 hours is describing a trip this road cannot deliver.
Those times apply to Muscat and nearby towns such as Seeb, Barka, Sohar and Nizwa. Salalah lies about 1,047 km from Muscat by road, and trucks usually reach it by turning south from Ibri through Adam, Haima and Thumrait, so we add roughly two days. Timing still depends on queues at the crossing, the Fasah appointment and Bayan clearance; we give you an estimated date at booking and update it once the truck clears the border.
Furniture moving prices from Saudi Arabia to Oman
Our rates are built on what removal companies publish for the Oman route from Riyadh, Dammam, Makkah and Tabuk, with our starting point set below the lowest of them. Each cell holds two figures: the lower is our opening price, the upper is roughly where the market takes the same line as volumes rise or the wilayat gets further away.
Approximate furniture moving prices from Saudi Arabia to Oman
Note: a household packed in Riyadh or the Eastern Province reaches Muscat after 3–5 working days on the road, one from the western cities after 5–7 days and one from Tabuk after about 6–8 days; Salalah and Duqm add around two days, and anything flown arrives door to door within 48–72 hours.
Starting price per item
Not every family moves a whole house. Some send a bedroom and two air conditioners because the Muscat flat comes partly furnished; others send only appliances and boxes. So here is the starting price per item, each including the road trip to your address in Oman:
Salalah, Duqm and Musandam cost more than Muscat
Distance inside the Sultanate is part of the price. Rates to Salalah, Duqm and Musandam are higher than to Muscat, so send us the exact wilayat on WhatsApp 0568829975 and we will give you the precise figure before you book.
Can your used furniture enter Oman duty-free?
Usually yes, if you belong to one of the two groups Omani customs names: an Omani citizen returning after living abroad, or a foreigner coming to reside in the Sultanate for the first time. Used furniture and personal effects belonging to these two groups are exempt from VAT and customs duty, subject to conditions and controls set by customs. The conditions boil down to three: the goods are personal, in non-commercial quantities, and coming from your previous country of residence, which here is the Kingdom.
In practice you present your ID card, passport or Omani residence visa at clearance, attach a detailed inventory, and must not be someone who trades in these items. Household shipments in Oman are inspected, very often in full, so we number every carton and tie each number to a line in the inventory. The inspector can open whatever he chooses and close it again without anything going astray.
What the exemption does not cover
- Cars and all means of transport: the household-goods exemption excludes vehicles, which have their own duty and conditions.
- New furniture and appliances: anything still boxed or bought just before the move may be treated as an import and usually pays 5% duty and 5% VAT, unless it is of GCC origin with a certificate of origin.
- Commercial quantities: twenty identical air conditioners or repeated boxes of stock stop being personal effects.
- Goods of a special nature and prohibited items: these stay under the GCC unified ban and restriction rules whatever your status.
Worked example: duty on new non-GCC furniture
Imagine your load includes a brand-new sofa set made outside the Gulf, valued at SAR 1,000 with freight and insurance. Duty at 5% is SAR 50. VAT at 5% is then charged on the value plus duty, SAR 1,050, which gives SAR 52.50. The total is SAR 102.50 for every SAR 1,000. The same sofa made in Saudi Arabia, travelling with a GCC certificate of origin, pays no customs duty. That is why we suggest keeping invoices for new appliances, and only unboxing items that are genuinely used.
Be wary of “fully exempt, no conditions”
Some pages claim Saudi furniture enters Oman “fully exempt” or under a “new Gulf agreement” without naming a single condition. The exemption is real, but it depends on your status (new resident or returning citizen) and on the nature of the goods; inspection still happens, and cars are outside it. The full detail is in our guide to Oman used household goods customs.
Two weeks before loading: what to prepare
What holds furniture up on the Oman run is rarely the road; it is a missing paper or an item nobody decided about. So we give clients a simple countdown that starts roughly two weeks before loading:
- Day −14: photograph each room and send the photos on WhatsApp so we can size the truck, count the crates and fix the price.
- Day −10: decide what goes and what you sell or leave. Heavy old furniture you will not use in Muscat adds cost and nothing else.
- Day −7: send copies of your passport, Saudi iqama and Omani residence visa or employment contract to our clearance team.
- Day −3: put books, discs and papers in separate cartons, as they may be reviewed by Oman’s information authority.
- Day −1: empty and dry the fridge, finish opened food, and keep jewellery and original documents in your personal bag.
Packing furniture for the Empty Quarter desert road
Between Haradh and Ibri the road runs for hours through sand dunes, and in summer the inside of a truck box can get far hotter than the air outside. That asks two things of the packing: protection from heat and fine dust, and protection from constant vibration over more than a thousand kilometres. At Gulf International Shipping each piece is packed according to what it is made of, not in one standard way for the whole house.

Marble, glass, mirrors and chandeliers
These go into wooden crates built to size and lined with foam, and they travel upright, never flat. Wood used in international shipping crates must be heat-treated or fumigated and stamped when it is thicker than about 6 mm, because raw timber can stop a shipment at inspection. Our crates are treated and stamped for exactly that reason.
Wood, sofas and mattresses
Wooden surfaces get a first layer that does not stick to the finish, then bubble wrap, then card corners. Sofas and mattresses go into sealed bags that keep fine dust out, which matters on a desert road; fabric that soaks up dust is hard to clean once it is back in your living room.
Kitchens and appliances
IKEA and aluminium kitchens come apart unit by unit, hinges and doors are numbered, and screws go into clear bags marked with the unit number. Fridges travel upright and rest for some hours after installation before being switched on, washing machine drums are locked, and large screens go into padded boxes. Air conditioners are removed with their pipes, sealed, and refitted in Oman if you ask.
Every piece is photographed before wrapping
We photograph your furniture piece by piece before it is wrapped and send you the photos with the inventory. They help twice: at reassembly, to see how each piece looked, and if you have any remark about its condition on arrival.
Loading day at your home in Saudi Arabia
Our crew arrives at the agreed time with all the packing materials, so you do not need to buy boxes or tape. We start with the rooms farthest from the door and leave the kitchen for last, since you use it until the final day. Every carton gets a number and the name of the room it will go into in the new home, so the delivery crew in Oman is never facing a hundred unlabelled boxes.

Loading follows a logic: heavy pieces low and close to the cab, tall items standing along the sides and strapped, light cartons on top, and gaps filled with blankets so nothing shifts on the long road. When the truck is loaded we hand you the inventory in Arabic and English, because Omani customs expects a clear English list, not vague entries such as “miscellaneous household goods”.
If you must hand back your Saudi home before your Omani home is ready, we can store the wrapped furniture in our warehouse until your address there is ready, then ship on the date you choose.
Documents required for moving furniture to Oman
If your Omani residence visa has not been issued yet, tell us before we set a loading date. We can start packing and storage, but it is better that the truck does not head for the border until the residence paperwork the exemption rests on is complete.
What must not travel with your furniture to Oman?
Omani customs publishes a list of prohibited goods, and some of them turn up in homes more often than people expect. The main items to keep out of your furniture shipment:
- Weapons of every kind, including sharp swords and daggers kept as decoration, and walking sticks that hide a blade.
- Toy pistols and rifles that resemble real weapons, and clothing or gear resembling military uniforms.
- Telescopic rifle sights, night-vision optics and electric stun devices of any kind.
- Drones, e-cigarettes and two-way radios such as walkie-talkies, which are refused or restricted in household shipments.
- Ivory and products of endangered species, and counterfeit goods.
- Perishable food and alcoholic drinks.
Some items are restricted rather than banned: books, films, software and religious or political publications may be held for review by the information authority before release, which can take days. Pack them in separate, clearly labelled cartons so a box of books does not hold up the whole house. Not sure about something? Photograph it before packing and we will check it item by item.
Delivery and reassembly in Muscat, Sohar, Nizwa and Salalah
The first wilayat a truck enters after the border is Ibri in Al Dhahirah; from there it heads for its destination. Deliveries to Ibri, Yanqul, Buraimi and Nizwa therefore arrive a little sooner than Muscat, while Salalah in the south needs a longer run. We cover almost every governorate:

Reassembly is part of the service, not an add-on: we put bedrooms, wardrobes, kitchens and curtains back together, connect air conditioners on request, and take the packing materials away with us. Towers and gated compounds in Muscat usually require an access permit from building management and a lift booking, so arrange it two days before we arrive; a truck waiting at the gate delays delivery and your day along with it.
If the truck arrives before you get the keys to your Omani home, we agree a delivery day with you and keep the furniture wrapped until then. Just tell us early; changing a delivery date after the border is harder than changing it before loading.
Can you move your car to Oman with the furniture?
Yes, but the car follows its own rules, separate from the furniture. Omani customs requires a private car to be less than 7 years old and to meet the Sultanate’s approved specifications, and cars coming from GCC states need an export certificate issued by the competent authority in the country of registration, meaning a Saudi export certificate through Traffic and Absher. Cars usually pay 5% customs duty and 5% VAT, and they are not covered by the household-goods exemption.
Cars never ride in the furniture truck: they go on their own carrier, from SAR 1,840 for a sedan or SUV and SAR 4,140 for a luxury model in an enclosed transporter. Leave nothing inside the car: it is inspected on its own, and a carton on the back seat only complicates that. Details are in our guide to car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Oman.
Air freight for urgent household items to Muscat
The furniture itself goes by road because it is cheaper and suits the volume, but some things cannot wait for the truck: the children’s school clothes, your work tools, a laptop, papers you need in the first week. For these we offer air freight from Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and Madinah airports to Muscat International Airport, all served by Oman Air nonstop flights, and from Taif with direct flights subject to the airline schedule.

The flight from Riyadh to Muscat takes about 2 hours 15 minutes and from Jeddah about 3 hours 15 minutes, but door to door usually means 48 to 72 hours depending on flights and clearance. Gulf International Shipping’s air freight starts at SAR 41 per kg. A quick sum shows when it is worth it: a 20 kg carton of clothes costs about SAR 820 by air, while it joins the furniture by road from SAR 138. More in air freight from Saudi Arabia to Oman.
How is the cost of moving furniture to Oman calculated?
- Volume before weight: a removal is priced mainly on the room it fills inside the truck, which is why a bulky but light corner sofa may cost more to move than a dense carton of books.
- Type of truck: groupage shared with other families, or a dedicated truck that leaves on your date.
- Loading city: a truck from Riyadh or Dammam reaches the start of the Empty Quarter road hundreds of kilometres sooner than one from Jeddah or Tabuk.
- Wilayat in Oman: Muscat, Al Batinah and Ad Dakhiliyah at one rate; Salalah, Duqm and Musandam higher.
- Special packing: wooden crates for marble, glass and antiques are priced by number and size.
- Floors and access: a tower without a suitable lift, or a narrow street a large truck cannot enter, needs extra labour or a smaller vehicle.
- Duty on new items: new non-GCC furniture in the load adds duty and VAT on top of the moving cost.
A rough example: a family in Riyadh moving a two-bedroom flat to Al Khuwair in Muscat, with a fridge, a washing machine, two air conditioners and twenty cartons. The apartment starts at SAR 2,020, and the final figure depends on the photos: the number of pieces and crates, and whether the building needs a permit. That is why we ask for photos before giving a final number.
The cheapest way to move furniture to Oman
For most families the best value is groupage: your furniture shares a truck with other households heading to the Sultanate, and you pay only for the space it takes. The trade-off is that the departure follows the shared trip, not your preferred day. Costs drop further if you get rid of bulky old furniture before shipping, book early ahead of busy moving seasons such as the end of the school year, and leave behind cheap appliances that cost about as much to move as to buy again in Muscat.
Costly mistakes families make moving to Oman
- Writing just “Oman” in Arabic: «عمان» is easily confused with Amman, the Jordanian capital, so always write “Sultanate of Oman” and the wilayat.
- Shipping before the Omani residence is issued: new-resident status is the basis of the exemption, and furniture arriving first can complicate clearance.
- A vague inventory: “assorted household goods” lengthens the inspection; a detailed list shortens it.
- Prohibited items among the clothes: a toy gun or a decorative dagger can stop the whole shipment.
- Believing two-day delivery promises: the road from Jeddah alone is over two thousand kilometres.
- Forgetting the building permit in Muscat: a truck waiting at a compound gate delays reassembly and disrupts your day.
