Gulf International Shipping provides air freight from Saudi Arabia to Oman flying from Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Madinah and Taif into Muscat International Airport, collecting at your door, clearing customs in Muscat and handing over at the receiver’s address in any Omani wilayat. Air shipments usually arrive door to door in 48–72 hours; the nonstop flight takes about 2 h 15 min from Riyadh and about 3 h 15 min from Jeddah. Our prices open at SAR 138 for parcels weighing up to 5 kg, SAR 184 for a carton up to 10 kg, and SAR 41 per kg for online-store orders and commercial consignments.
Air freight to Oman is not for everything. It earns its cost when time matters more than the price difference: a document an employee in Muscat is waiting for, a spare part that has stopped a machine in Sohar, a sample a client wants before signing, or a gift that must arrive on a set date. This guide covers which Saudi airport suits your shipment, how airlines work out its chargeable weight, what they accept and refuse, how the shipment is cleared in Muscat, and when road freight across the Empty Quarter is the smarter call.
At a glance
- Airports: Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and Madinah all have nonstop Muscat services; Taif depends on the airline timetable
- Flight time: About 2 h 15 min from Riyadh (around 1,186 km), about 3 h 15 min from Jeddah (around 1,976 km)
- Door to door: Normally 48–72 hours, subject to flight space and Muscat clearance
- Prices: Parcels up to 5 kg from SAR 138, cartons up to 10 kg from SAR 184, commercial freight from SAR 41 per kg
- Chargeable weight: The greater of actual and volumetric weight; volumetric is usually length × width × height in cm ÷ 6000
- Customs: Cleared on the Omani Bayan platform; new non-GCC items attract 5% duty plus 5% VAT
- Road alternative: 3–5 working days by truck through the Empty Quarter post from Riyadh or the east; small cartons from SAR 46

Which Saudi airports ship parcels to Muscat?
The Kingdom’s main airports have regular flights to Muscat International, most of them run by Oman Air and SalamAir. A nonstop passenger flight usually means cargo space in the aircraft hold, and that is the capacity we book for our customers. The table sums up each city:
The best airport is not always the one nearest your home. A shipment from Qassim, for instance, usually goes through Riyadh because it has more flights, and a load from Makkah or Taif may leave from Jeddah if its flight is sooner. At Gulf International Shipping we pick the airport that gets the shipment there fastest, not the one that looks closest on the map, and we collect from your door and take it to that airport.
Approximate prices for air freight from Saudi Arabia to Oman
Gulf International Shipping based its air rates on the lowest published prices for this lane and set its starting price below them. We have added road rows for comparison, because many people searching for air freight find their shipment is better suited to road. In each price cell, the lower number is our starting rate and the higher one a usual ceiling, which depends on weight and the wilayat of delivery.
Note: by air, allow 48–72 hours door to door, varying with the flight booked and the speed of clearance at Muscat; by truck through the Empty Quarter it is 3–5 working days from the capital and the east, and 5–7 from the western cities.
Rates to Salalah and other wilayats far from Muscat are slightly higher, because the shipment needs onward transport after Muscat or a flight to Salalah airport subject to schedule. Full households and cars are not normally flown, since the cost outweighs the time saved. Every city’s tables are in shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Oman.
Chargeable weight: how airlines bill a shipment to Muscat
What surprises first-time air shippers most is that the bill is not always based on what the scale shows. Cargo holds fill up by volume long before they hit their weight limit, so carriers calculate a volumetric weight for each carton and charge whichever is greater, actual or volumetric. Most use the same formula: take the three dimensions in centimetres, multiply them together, then divide by 6000.
Example: a carton measuring 60 × 50 × 50 cm weighs 12 kg on the scale. Its volume is 150,000 cubic centimetres, which divided by 6000 gives a volumetric weight of 25 kg, so you are charged for 25 kg, not 12. If it holds clothes or light toys, it pays to repack them more tightly into a smaller carton, or to send them by road, where a small carton starts from just SAR 46.
Ship less air
With air freight you pay for every empty centimetre in the box. Use a carton sized to its contents, fill the gaps with light padding, and never put a small carton inside a big one. We weigh and measure your shipment at pickup and tell you the chargeable weight before it goes.

Air or road freight to Oman?
The land route between the two countries is now direct through the Empty Quarter crossing, which has narrowed the time gap between the two modes compared with the days when road freight had to pass through the UAE. So the decision deserves a calm comparison:
Our rule of thumb with customers is simple: light and urgent goes by air; heavy, bulky or able to wait a few days goes by road. In between, we split shipments: documents and small devices fly so their owner can use them on arrival, and the rest of the household follows by road a few days later. Road options from your city are covered in shipping company from Saudi Arabia to Oman.
What suits air freight to Muscat and Salalah?
- Documents and official papers: contracts, certificates and passports that cannot wait.
- Urgent spare parts: a part for a machine standing idle on a site or in a factory, where every day of downtime costs money.
- Commercial samples: product samples for a client or an exhibition in Muscat.
- Online-store orders: sealed perfumes, clothing, accessories and small electronics sent by a store to its customers.
- Gifts and occasions: anything that has to arrive before a specific date.
- Dates and packaged sweets: in sealed original packaging with a clear expiry date.
- First-days essentials: a laptop, papers and clothes for someone who has moved to Oman and is waiting for furniture by road.
Items airlines restrict and Omani customs prohibit
Air cargo faces two layers of restriction: the dangerous goods rules airlines apply on every flight, and the list of prohibited goods published by Oman Customs. Something accepted by road may be refused by air; the reverse is rare.
Typically restricted by airlines
- Loose lithium batteries and power banks; devices with built-in batteries are accepted under specific packing conditions.
- Perfume and oud oil in large quantities, aerosols and pressurised products.
- Lighters, matches and gas cylinders.
- Paints, solvents, car batteries and flammable liquids.
Main items prohibited by Oman Customs
- Drugs, explosives and any kind of weapon, ornamental ones included.
- Military-look clothing and kit, and realistic toy guns.
- Gun sights, night-vision devices and stun guns.
- Ivory, fakes, and products that fail Omani standards.
- Drones, vapes and two-way radios, unless specifically approved.
Check with us on any doubtful item before it goes in a box; we confirm each item case by case, because one refused item can send the whole shipment back or hold it at the airport.

Customs clearance at Muscat airport and VAT
In Muscat, a licensed clearing agent processes each incoming air shipment on Bayan, much the same as by road, but faster because the consignments are smaller. Most goods made outside the GCC pay 5% customs duty in Oman, and 5% VAT is then charged on the goods, freight and insurance plus that duty.
Example: a new phone made outside the Gulf, worth SAR 2,000 including freight, attracts 5% duty of SAR 100, then 5% VAT on SAR 2,100, which is SAR 105, so about SAR 205 is payable. Goods manufactured in the Kingdom that travel with a GCC origin certificate skip customs duty altogether, a real advantage for stores selling Saudi products into the Sultanate.
Used personal effects belonging to someone moving to Oman for the first time, or to a returning citizen, are exempt under conditions if they are personal and in non-commercial quantities, on presentation of a passport, ID card or residence visa. People sometimes confuse this with the traveller’s allowance for personal goods and gifts on arrival, which is a limit in Omani rials for items carried on the trip itself, not for goods sent as cargo. Details are in Oman used household goods customs.

Air freight to Salalah and other wilayats in Oman
Muscat is the main air gateway for shipments from the Kingdom, and from there the goods move on to the other wilayats. Seeb, Bawshar, Al Amerat, Muttrah, Qurum and Al Khuwair are usually delivered the same day after clearance, while Sohar, Rustaq, Nizwa and Sur need roughly one more day by road.
Salalah is more than 1,000 km from Muscat by road, so we choose between two options: a flight to Salalah airport when the schedule allows, or arrival in Muscat followed by onward transport. We pick based on the size and urgency of the shipment and tell you the expected transit time before you book. Duqm and Musandam are priced shipment by shipment, so ask for your quote and name the wilayat.
Documents required for air freight to Oman
We issue the air waybill and follow clearance in Muscat with the agent, so you never need to visit the airport. For regular commercial shipments we suggest reading goods shipping from Saudi Arabia to Oman, and for small store orders cartons and parcels shipping to Oman.
Packing an air shipment so it arrives intact
An air shipment is moved, stacked and lifted mechanically several times: in the cargo terminal, on the air pallet and again in Muscat. So we pack it differently from road freight:
- A new double-wall carton, never a used supermarket box.
- Internal padding that stops movement, because a device that rattles inside a box breaks even if it is never dropped.
- Permitted liquids sealed in bags and placed in the centre of the carton.
- Wide tape in an H pattern on top and bottom.
- A clear label with the receiver’s name, number and wilayat, and “Sultanate of Oman” written in full.
Mistakes that delay air shipments to Muscat
- Writing only “Oman” in Arabic: Arabic labels saying just «عمان» can be routed to Amman, Jordan; spell out Sultanate of Oman, Muscat, plus the wilayat.
- Hiding a battery or perfume in a carton: security screening finds it and the shipment comes back.
- A vague description: “miscellaneous items” slows clearance; list what is in the box.
- Ignoring volumetric weight: a bulky box of light items can be billed above a compact heavy one.
- A wrong receiver number: the agent and driver both call the receiver, and a phone that is off costs a day.
- Flying furniture: you pay several times the road price to save only a few days.
When should you choose road over air?
If your shipment is household furniture, large appliances, goods by the tonne or a car, road freight through the Empty Quarter crossing is the right choice. Cars in particular are not flown under normal circumstances; with us they go by road from SAR 1,840, as long as it is under seven years old and properly exported from Saudi Arabia. Read car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Oman and the border guide in Empty Quarter border crossing guide for Oman.
