As a shipping company from Riyadh to Oman, Gulf International Shipping loads furniture, cars, cartons and trade goods at your Riyadh home or warehouse and trucks them along the Empty Quarter highway and through its border post, the one direct overland link between the Kingdom and the Sultanate, to the receiver’s door in Muscat, Nizwa, Sohar or Salalah. By road, Muscat, Ibri, Nizwa, Buraimi and Sohar are 3–5 working days away, with the far south (Salalah, Duqm) taking 5–7 days, while air cargo from King Khalid Airport to Muscat International arrives door to door in 48–72 hours. From Riyadh, our prices begin at SAR 46 per small carton, SAR 1,100 per bedroom set and SAR 2,020 for a small apartment or a sedan on a shared car carrier.
On this lane Riyadh is more than a pickup city; it is where the journey naturally begins. A truck leaving the south of the capital heads through Al-Kharj and Haradh, joins the desert highway cut through the sands to the Omani border, and never has to pass through a third country. This guide is written for people who live or trade in Riyadh: where we collect, how the shipment covers the road stage by stage, what it costs, and what the Omani side asks for when it arrives.

What is the road route from Riyadh to Muscat?
Many people still assume that freight from Riyadh to Oman has to go through the UAE, as it once did, and so they budget for a longer trip and customs in three countries. That is no longer how it works. Gulf International Shipping trucks take the direct desert highway across the Empty Quarter, a road of about 725 km from its Saudi starting point to Ibri, of which roughly 564 km lie in the Kingdom and the remaining 161 km in Oman. It begins at the junction of the Batha–Haradh road, about 25 km before you would reach the Batha post, and runs south to the Shaybah oil field and on to the frontier.
For a load that starts in Riyadh, the trip splits into five clear stages. The table shows approximate distances, since the exact figure shifts a little with the pickup point in Riyadh and the delivery address in Oman:

Those stages explain why we quote Riyadh customers 3–5 working days rather than the 36 or 48 hours some websites advertise. Driving alone takes around 15–18 hours, and on top of that come loading in Riyadh, the border appointment, inspection and clearance on the Omani side, and final delivery to each address. A company promising Riyadh to Muscat in two days is either counting wheel time only or describing a best case that rarely happens.
The crossing itself is the Empty Quarter (Rub’ al Khali) border post on the Saudi side, run as one of the Kingdom’s land ports. Opposite it on the Omani side is a post most sources spell Ramlat Khaylah, near Ibri. According to Saudipedia, its freight yard can handle roughly 966 trucks daily, inbound and outbound, and commercial traffic moves 24 hours a day, though queues lengthen at busy times. For the step-by-step crossing procedure, see our Empty Quarter border crossing guide for Oman.
Al-Ruqi is not on the Oman road
Some Riyadh-to-Oman shipping pages name “Al-Ruqi” or “Ghuwaifat” as the Oman crossing. Al-Ruqi is on the Kuwaiti border, and Ghuwaifat is the UAE side of the Batha post. If a quote for your Muscat shipment mentions either, ask the company which road its truck will actually take.
Approximate shipping prices from Riyadh to Oman
Gulf International Shipping set its Riyadh rates after reviewing what shipping companies publish for the Riyadh–Oman lane, placing each starting price below the lowest published figure for that item. The first table gives two numbers per shipment type: the first is our “from” price, the second is a typical ceiling for bigger loads or those needing crates and extra wrapping.
Note: road transit from Riyadh is usually 3–5 working days to Muscat, Nizwa and Sohar and 5–7 days to Salalah and Duqm, with timing affected by congestion at the Empty Quarter post, the booked Fasah slot and how quickly Bayan clearance runs on the Omani side; by air, door to door, allow 48–72 hours.
Item prices from Riyadh
Most Riyadh bookings are not whole houses. It might be an employee moving his things after landing a job in Muscat, a family sending a fridge and washing machine to a son in Sohar, or an online store shipping orders to customers in the Sultanate. So we publish a starting price for each item within a shared load:
Expect higher rates for Salalah, Duqm and Musandam than for Muscat, because Salalah alone is more than 1,000 km from Muscat by road. Ask for your quote on WhatsApp and name the wilayat. To compare Riyadh with other Saudi cities, see shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Oman.
Shared load or a private truck from Riyadh to Oman?
This is the first decision, and it moves both price and timing. On a shared (groupage) load your goods take part of a truck carrying other customers’ shipments to the Sultanate, so you pay by volume or weight and wait for the next departure. With a private truck the whole load is yours: it leaves on the day you choose and stops only at your address.
- Shared loads suit cartons and bags, one or two rooms, single appliances, small trade consignments and online orders. Items start from SAR 46 and goods from SAR 780 per tonne.
- A small dedicated truck suits a full apartment, a small office, or anything that cannot wait. From SAR 4,140.
- A large truck suits a villa, a warehouse of stock, equipment, or a trader who wants everything delivered in one drop. From SAR 5,980.
Riyadh is better served by groupage than any other Saudi city, because loads from the centre, Qassim and the west often pass through it on their way to Haradh. Riyadh consolidation trucks fill faster, so a small shipment does not sit waiting for long. If you are moving commercial cargo by the tonne or by the pallet, invoices and certificates of origin are covered in goods shipping from Saudi Arabia to Oman.
Where do we collect in Riyadh and its governorates?
Our pickup crews cover every part of Riyadh: Al Malqa, Al Yasmin, Al Narjis, Hittin and Al Aqiq in the north; Olaya, Sulaimaniyah, Al Malaz and Al Murabba in the centre; Al Rimal, Al Qadisiyah, Al Rawdah and Al Naseem in the east; Al Sulay, Al Shifa and Al Aziziyah in the south; and Al Nakheel, Dhahrat Laban and Al Suwaidi in the west. We also collect from towers and residential compounds that need an access permit or a booking with building management, and arrange that before moving day.
Outside the city we collect across the Riyadh region: Al-Kharj, Diriyah, Al Muzahmiyah, Hawtat Bani Tamim, Al Aflaj, Wadi Al Dawasir, Al Dawadmi, Al Quwayiyah, Afif, Shaqra, Al Majmaah and Az Zulfi. Al-Kharj in particular lies on the truck route to Haradh, so we load there directly without returning to the capital, and Hawtat Bani Tamim and Al Aflaj sit close to that southern corridor.
Packing Riyadh furniture for a long desert road
The road from Riyadh to Muscat runs through hundreds of kilometres of sand, and under a summer sun a closed cargo box heats up well beyond the air outside. Standard in-city moving packaging is not enough. Gulf International Shipping’s Riyadh crews follow a fixed method: beds, wardrobes and kitchens are dismantled and every part numbered; wood is wrapped in layers of heavy-duty film and then cardboard; corners get foam guards; screens, mirrors and glass go into dedicated boxes; and cartons are sealed with wide tape to keep dust out.

We ask Riyadh customers to do three things before packing day: empty the fridge and switch it off a full day ahead so it dries, set aside valuables and documents to carry personally, and photograph appliances while they are working. If you have a lot of books, discs or films, note that Omani authorities may review printed matter and media before release, so keep them in separate, clearly labelled cartons. For whole-home moves specifically, read furniture moving from Saudi Arabia to Oman.
Car shipping from Riyadh to Oman
We move cars from Riyadh to Muscat and the other wilayats in three ways, each with its own Gulf International Shipping starting price: a sedan on an open shared carrier from SAR 2,020, a car on a flatbed from SAR 2,300, an SUV alone on a hydraulic flatbed from SAR 2,760, and an enclosed transporter for luxury and sports models from SAR 4,140.
Check the age rule before you book, because it is the most common reason a car is turned away: under Oman Customs rules an imported private car must be younger than 7 years, with exceptions for genuinely classic vehicles under special approvals. For cars coming from GCC states, the Royal Oman Police also insist on an export certificate from the traffic authority of the state where the car is registered, which means a Saudi car needs a proper export through Absher, not just a clearance slip.
- In Riyadh: valid registration (istimara), valid periodic inspection, settled traffic fines, export of the car with export plates, and, for a financed car, a release letter from the lender.
- At the border: an export declaration on Fasah on the Saudi side, then clearance on Bayan on the Omani side.
- In Oman: 5% customs duty, then 5% VAT on the car value with that duty added; local insurance must be in place before the car arrives, and registration with the Royal Oman Police afterwards.
- Specifications: left-hand drive and GCC specs; cars with serious accident, flood or fire damage are usually refused.
We cover the rules, paperwork and costs in full in car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Oman, and recommend reading it before you export the car on Absher.
Air freight from Riyadh to Muscat
If your goods cannot afford several days on the highway, fly them. Nonstop flights leave King Khalid International for Muscat International, operated by Oman Air and SalamAir, with a flight time of about 2 h 15 min over roughly 1,186 km. Our air rate begins at SAR 41 per kg for personal parcels and e-commerce orders, with door-to-door delivery in 48–72 hours, depending on the next flight with space and how fast Muscat customs releases it.
Air suits urgent documents, spare parts a workshop or factory is waiting for, commercial samples, gifts and small e-commerce orders. For furniture, large appliances and cars the air cost rarely makes sense, and road freight from Riyadh arrives within a few days. For a full comparison of Saudi airports, transit times and weights, read air freight from Saudi Arabia to Oman.
Tax and customs in Oman on a Riyadh shipment
The Sultanate levies 5% VAT, and on top of that a 5% customs duty applies to most non-GCC goods. What catches people out is the tax base: VAT applies to the landed value (goods, freight and insurance) with the duty added on top, not to the shop price. Example: a new appliance made outside the Gulf, worth SAR 1,000 including freight, attracts SAR 50 duty, then 5% VAT on SAR 1,050, which is SAR 52.50, for a total of about SAR 102.50 payable.
Saudi-made products accompanied by a GCC certificate of origin cross without customs duty, which matters a great deal to Riyadh traders, although import VAT may still apply to commercial shipments. On used household furniture, Oman Customs waives the charges for two groups, Omani citizens returning from abroad and expatriates settling in Oman for the first time, so long as the goods are for personal use, not in trade quantities, and come from the previous country of residence, backed by an ID card, passport or residence visa and an itemised inventory. The exemption does not cover cars, and new furniture is normally subject to duty and VAT.
A clear inventory shortens inspection
Personal effects shipments in Oman are inspected, sometimes in full. An inventory that states what is in each carton, rather than a vague “miscellaneous items”, makes checking quicker and reduces questions. We prepare it while packing in Riyadh and send you a copy.
The exemption and its conditions are explained in full in Oman used household goods customs.
Transit times from Riyadh to towns across Oman
After the border, Ibri is the first stop, which is why loads for Al Dhahirah and the interior sometimes arrive before Muscat itself. The far south and east need an extra day or two. These are the transit times we work to for Riyadh road shipments:

Musandam is a special case: it is part of Oman, but by land you reach it through the UAE, so we take the Batha road and then the UAE–Oman crossings. We occasionally use that route for other loads when circumstances call for it, but the standard path for every Riyadh shipment is the direct road across the Empty Quarter.
Documents required to ship from Riyadh to Oman
In most cases you do not need to visit any office yourself. Our team files on Fasah for the Saudi exit and coordinates with the Omani clearing agent on Bayan, and we only ask you for the documents that relate to you personally. The full list for each case is on our customs clearance service page.
Prohibited items for Riyadh shipments to Oman
Oman Customs has published a list of its main prohibited goods, and household shipments carry some additional restrictions. These are the key items; we confirm them with you at booking because some are assessed case by case:
- Drugs, explosives and all weapons, even ornamental daggers and swords.
- Military-style uniforms and gear, and toy guns that look real.
- Telescopic sights, night-vision optics, tasers and other stun devices.
- Ivory, and counterfeit goods or goods breaching specifications or intellectual property rights.
- Drones, vapes and two-way radios, which are refused in household moves unless approved.
- Perishable food packed with furniture, and anything flammable or pressurised.

Which factors set the price of a Riyadh to Oman shipment?
There is no single figure that fits every shipment, but the calculation is simple once you know what drives it:
- Volume and weight: on groupage you pay for space or kilos, whichever is higher; a private truck is priced per vehicle.
- Delivery town: Ibri, Nizwa and Muscat cost less than Salalah, Duqm and Musandam.
- Service type: shared load, small or large truck, or car carrier.
- Extras: dismantling and reassembly, wooden crates for fragile pieces, a hoist for upper floors, and storage before shipping.
- Charges in Oman: new non-GCC items attract 5% duty and 5% VAT; used goods of new residents are exempt under conditions.
A worked example: a family in Al Narjis wants to move its bedroom, sofa set, fridge, washer and 15 boxes to Seeb. At starting prices the bedroom is SAR 1,100, the living-room set SAR 1,380, the fridge SAR 550 and the washer SAR 460, with cartons charged by size from SAR 46 for a small one. We then compare that total with the two-bedroom apartment rate, which starts from SAR 2,020, and choose whichever is cheaper for them.
Cutting the cost of a Riyadh–Oman shipment
- If the date is flexible, go groupage; it is a fraction of a private truck.
- Get rid of heavy, worn-out furniture first; sometimes buying new in Oman beats shipping something tired.
- Dismantle whatever can be dismantled, because smaller volume means a lower price.
- If you are a new resident, ship used furniture within the exemption and do not mix in new goods in commercial quantities.
- Use road freight for furniture and keep air for light, urgent items only.
Mistakes people make shipping from Riyadh to Muscat
- Believing a 48-hour promise: the distance alone needs around 15–18 hours of driving, before the border and clearance.
- Sending a car that has reached 7 years: it is refused on arrival and comes back at extra cost.
- Forgetting the car export certificate: a clearance slip alone is no longer enough for cars arriving from the Gulf.
- A vague inventory: “household items” is not enough, and inspection takes longer.
- Writing just “Oman” in an Arabic address: write “Sultanate of Oman” and the wilayat so it is not confused with Amman in Jordan.
- Hiding prohibited items in cartons: it can hold up the entire shipment, not just one box.
Do you ship from Oman back to Riyadh?
Yes. We arrange reverse moves from Muscat and other wilayats to Riyadh for returning families, students and company staff, using the same Empty Quarter road. The formalities simply run the other way: export on the Omani side and clearance on the Saudi side, with used furniture for returning Saudis subject to Saudi customs conditions. Ask for your quote on WhatsApp and tell us which wilayat we are collecting from.
