As a shipping company from Madinah to Oman, Gulf International Shipping moves household furniture, dates, books, cars and cartons from Madinah’s districts and governorates to Muscat, Nizwa, Sohar and Salalah by road, routing the truck through Qassim, Riyadh and the Empty Quarter border post, the one direct overland way into the Sultanate of Oman. The distance is about 2,150–2,300 km, and the truck typically needs five to seven working days to Muscat, or six to eight to Salalah. A small parcel with us starts at SAR 92 and a 30 kg carton or suitcase at SAR 138; a complete bedroom starts at SAR 1,380, a sedan at SAR 2,020, and air freight out of Madinah airport at SAR 41 a kilo.
Three things set the Madinah lane apart, and we see all of them in our orders every week: cartons of dates that Madinah families send to relatives and friends in Oman; large home libraries belonging to scholars, students and teachers who are relocating; and nonstop flights from Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz Airport to Muscat, which spare anyone in a hurry the wait for the truck. So this page starts with the route, transit time and price, then gives each of these shipment types its own section.

What is the road freight route from Madinah to Oman?
On a map Oman lies south-east of Madinah, but no truck road crosses the heart of the peninsula in that direction. The truck normally heads to Qassim first, then down to Riyadh, then south via Al Kharj and Haradh to the point where the Batha and Haradh roads meet, which is where the desert highway to the Empty Quarter starts. That is why the distance from Madinah to Muscat ends up very close to the distance from Makkah or Jeddah, even though the trip starts off in a different direction.
From the junction to Ibri the desert highway totals about 725 km: 564 km on the Saudi side and 161 km on the Omani side. It is the longest stretch with no towns, so we make sure the truck enters it with a full tank, complete papers and a booked border slot, and never stops in the middle of the sands over a missing document.
Collection across Madinah and its governorates
In the city we reach Quba, Al Awali, Sultanah, Shuran, Al Difa, Al Khalidiyah, Al Aziziyah, Al Jurf, Al Uyun, Bani Harithah, Al Ranuna, Al Anabis, and the eastern and western Harrah districts. Beyond it we collect from Yanbu, both the residential town and the industrial city, and from AlUla, Badr, Khaybar, Al Hanakiyah, Al Mahd, Al Ais and Wadi Al Fara. Governorate loads are consolidated in Madinah and leave on the Oman line, so someone with a few items in AlUla or Khaybar never pays for a whole truck.
How long does shipping from Madinah to Oman take?
Transit depends first on the mode, then on the delivery city inside Oman, then on border traffic and how quickly clearance goes. Here is how the options from Madinah compare:
Salalah lies in Dhofar Governorate at the southern end of the country, and the road from Muscat to Salalah alone measures some 1,047 km. After the border the truck heads south through Adam, Haima and Thumrait, so it needs one or two days more than Muscat. All these times are approximate and shift with traffic at the Empty Quarter crossing, the Fasah slot and Bayan clearance.
Approximate shipping prices from Madinah to Oman
Carriers on the Madinah–Oman lane do not publish fixed prices, so Gulf International Shipping took the nearest city that does, Makkah, and set our starting price below it. Where Tabuk, which is farther from Oman, advertised a lower price for the same item, we used the Tabuk figure, so you never pay more in Madinah than someone farther away. The first figure in the table is the starting price; the second is where a shipment usually lands as volume grows or special packing is needed.
Note: by road, Madinah to Muscat generally takes between 5 and 7 working days, and Salalah a day or two more (6–8); air from Madinah airport reaches the door in 48–72 hours.
Starting prices by type of item
Delivery to Salalah, Duqm and Musandam costs more than to Muscat because of the extra distance inside Oman, so we do not publish a fixed figure; we price it once we know the volume, weight and drop-off point. Drop us the list on WhatsApp 0568829975 for a figure.

Shipping Madinah dates to Oman
Dates are what leaves Madinah for Oman most often in small cartons: Ajwa, Safawi, Sukkari and Mabroom, sent by families as gifts or ordered by residents of Muscat and Sohar from farms they know. They can go by road or by air, but the long desert road calls for a few precautions. Pressed dates, or dates in sealed tubs, handle the trip well; loose, soft fresh dates react to heat and can sweat inside the carton.
- Packing: sealed factory or farm tubs or bags inside a strong carton, with the variety and weight written on the outside.
- Personal and commercial quantities: a few cartons for family travel as parcels from SAR 92; 100 kg of food items starts from SAR 1,380; large trade quantities go by the ton from SAR 780.
- Customs: with a GCC certificate of origin, Saudi dates pay no customs duty in Oman, though commercial imports remain subject to VAT.
- Approvals: commercial food shipments may need clearance from Oman’s food safety authorities, and we confirm this before loading.
For traders sending large volumes of dates in summer, we arrange refrigerated or insulated trucks on request, because temperatures on the Empty Quarter road in the hot months are high. Air freight is a good choice for small quantities of premium dates that the owner wants delivered within two or three days. Date pastries and fresh ma’amoul, on the other hand, are not worth sending by road given their short shelf life.
Moving home libraries, books and copies of the Quran from Madinah
Many Madinah homes hold a large library: religious texts, university references and old volumes their owners treasure. When the owner moves to Oman to work or teach, the books are the heaviest part of the shipment and the part that needs the most care. Books never go into large cartons, because a big carton full of books becomes too heavy and splits at the bottom; we use small paper-lined cartons, set volumes upright or flat according to their size, and fill every gap so nothing shifts.

Wooden bookshelves are taken apart panel by panel, each panel wrapped in blankets, with the screws gathered in a numbered bag taped to the first panel. The wooden desk gets protective covers and then tight stretch film. Every book carton carries a number and a short description such as “fiqh books, 30 volumes”, which speeds up inspection and makes it easy to rebuild your library in your new home in Oman.
Books and printed matter at Omani customs
Books, printed matter and discs in household shipments may be referred to the media authority for review before release, and that review can take extra time. So we list books clearly on the inventory and keep them in cartons separate from everything else, so that if their review runs long the furniture is not held back with them. Wooden crates for valuable pieces should be heat-treated and stamped, because untreated wood packaging may be refused.
Preparing furniture and appliances for the long haul
Furniture from a Madinah home travels over two thousand kilometres, much of it open desert. So before loading day we do a visit or a video call to list the items and estimate the volume, then we take beds and wardrobes apart, label each part with a number, and wrap the wood in paper, then bubble wrap, then tight plastic film that keeps dust out. Mirrors and glass tops go into wooden crates, sofas get fitted covers, and rugs are rolled, never folded.
We ask for the fridge to be switched off and dried a day before loading, the washing machine to be drained with its drum locked, and air conditioners to be removed by a technician with their pipes sealed. We photograph each appliance working before it is disconnected, so its condition is on record. And if your home in Oman is not handed over yet, we store your things in a closed warehouse until you set the shipping date.
The Empty Quarter crossing: Fasah in Saudi Arabia, Bayan in Oman
No other land border post connects Saudi Arabia and Oman besides the Empty Quarter crossing, which sits administratively within the Eastern Province. It was built for roughly 966 trucks every day across both directions of travel, with freight processed 24 hours, though queues lengthen at busy times. On the Omani side it faces a post known as Ramlat Khaylah, close to Ibri, in Al Dhahirah.

On the Saudi side the truck deals with Fasah, ZATCA’s electronic customs platform: the export declaration is filed, an arrival appointment is booked, and the truck must arrive within its time slot. Once in Oman, clearance is handled through Bayan by a registered customs broker, and household shipments are normally fully inspected. That makes the numbered inventory the most important paper in your shipment: every carton has a number, and every number has a description.
What about the UAE route? Before the Empty Quarter road opened, trucks crossed the UAE to reach Oman, passing the Batha post, then Al Ghuwaifat, then one of the UAE–Oman crossings, with third-country transit formalities. Today we take the direct road and use the UAE route only when needed, above all for deliveries to Musandam, which no land road reaches from the rest of Oman, so the only overland access is via the UAE. Full crossing details are in Empty Quarter crossing procedures for Oman shipments.
Air freight from Madinah airport to Muscat
The Madinah lane has one clear advantage: there is no need to go to Jeddah or Riyadh for air freight, because Oman Air and SalamAir operate nonstop flights between Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport and Muscat International Airport. Air freight with us is charged from SAR 41 a kilo on parcels and e-commerce stock, and we deliver door to door in about 48–72 hours depending on the flight schedule and clearance.
Air freight suits official documents and attested certificates, personal medicines, small electronics, small quantities of premium dates, and the bags you need in your first days before the furniture arrives. We do not recommend it for furniture or large appliances, because airlines bill on whichever is greater, the real weight or the volumetric one, which makes furniture very expensive to fly. For delivery in Salalah we route the shipment via Muscat or on whatever flights are available at booking. Air freight from Saudi Arabia to Oman sets out flight options and rates.
For traders exporting in containers there is a sea option from Jeddah port to Salalah on request, but household furniture and cars go by road through the Empty Quarter, which is faster and simpler in procedure.
Car shipping from Madinah to Oman
Cars leave Madinah for Oman with us in four ways, from cheapest up: sedans travel on a shared transporter carrying several cars, from SAR 2,020; a car alone on a flatbed costs from SAR 2,300; big family vehicles ride a private hydraulic flatbed from SAR 2,760; and luxury or sports cars ride fully enclosed, from SAR 4,140. The car takes the same Qassim, Riyadh and Empty Quarter route and arrives in Muscat on roughly the furniture’s timetable.
On loading day leave about a quarter of a tank, take all personal belongings out of the car, and we photograph it with you from every side before it goes up the carrier. If your car is electric, tell us in advance so we arrange the right loading method. Car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Oman gives the full picture.
Do you pay tax or customs on your belongings in Oman?
Two charges matter in Oman: 5% customs duty on most goods not of GCC origin, then 5% VAT worked out on the combined value of the goods, their freight and insurance, plus the duty. A Saudi product travelling with a GCC certificate of origin is not charged customs duty. An example: air conditioners and a fridge imported new from outside the Gulf, valued at SAR 4,000 with freight, carry SAR 200 in duty; 5% VAT on SAR 4,200 then adds SAR 210, bringing the bill to roughly SAR 410.
Omanis coming home from abroad, and foreigners settling in Oman for their first residency, can bring in used furniture and personal effects exempt, on condition the goods serve the owner’s own household rather than trade and are sent from the country where he lived, and that he shows his ID card, passport or residence visa with an itemised inventory. Cars fall outside the exemption, and every household shipment is inspected. We explain it fully in Oman used household goods customs.
Delivery in Muscat’s neighbourhoods and across Oman
Most Madinah shipments go to Muscat, whose neighbourhoods vary a lot: Al Mouj, Qurum, Al Azaiba, Al Khuwair, Al Mawaleh, Ruwi, Bawshar, Seeb, Al Amerat and Muttrah. Much of the housing is in apartment buildings with shared entrances or gated compounds, and some require a lift booking or a truck entry permit. So before arrival we ask for the building name, flat number and floor, and we coordinate with the building watchman or compound management where needed.

After unloading our team reassembles beds, wardrobes and bookshelves by the same numbers and checks the list with you piece by piece. If the shipment is small and your address is in a town off the main road, we deliver it in a smaller vehicle from the unloading point to your door.

Prohibited items for shipping to Oman you should know about
Omani customs refuses certain items, and we decline to load them from the outset so they never hold up the whole shipment. The main ones:
- Weapons of all kinds, ammunition and explosives, and swords, daggers and knives, including decorative ones
- Narcotics and psychotropic substances, and e-cigarettes
- Military-style clothing and gear, plus toy pistols resembling real arms
- Weapon scopes and night-vision devices, stun guns, drones and two-way radios
- Ivory, counterfeit goods, and products of Israeli origin
- Perishable food on the long road trip
If something among your belongings leaves you unsure, photograph it and send it to us before packing, and we will check it for you.
What determines the cost of shipping from Madinah to Oman?
The factors that set the cost: the volume or weight of the shipment, groupage or a dedicated truck, the level of packing, optional insurance, floors and lifts in Madinah and in Oman, and the Omani governorate we deliver to. An example from a typical order: a teacher moving from Quba to Muscat with a bedroom (1,380), a dining table (550), a fridge (550), a washing machine (460), an air conditioner (640) and ten cartons of books (595) starts from about SAR 4,175 by groupage.
When does a dedicated truck work out cheaper?
Notice that the example above comes close to the starting price of a small dedicated truck, SAR 4,140. When your item total approaches that figure, ask us about a dedicated truck: you may pay about the same and get a vehicle to yourself that leaves straight away without waiting for consolidation.
Saving money on shipping from Madinah to Oman
- Choose groupage for small and medium volumes, so you pay only for your space on the truck.
- Cut the volume before shipping: cheap bulky furniture can be cheaper to buy in Muscat than to ship.
- Send books by road, not air: their weight makes air freight needlessly expensive.
- Combine family shipments: if several relatives are sending cartons to the same Omani city, put them in one shipment.
- Book early: booking before holidays and peak seasons gets you an earlier slot and a clearer price.
Common slip-ups on Madinah to Oman shipments
- Writing just “Oman” in Arabic on the address or cartons, where it gets confused with Amman, the capital of Jordan; write “Sultanate of Oman” with the city, such as Muscat or Sohar.
- Putting books in large cartons, which split under the weight before arrival.
- Sending loose soft dates in summer, which sweat and stick inside the carton.
- Paying to ship a car aged 7 years or more, which Omani customs then rejects.
- Tucking new appliances in among used furniture without putting them on the list, which drags out inspection.
