Gulf International Shipping handles goods shipping from Saudi Arabia to Oman for traders, factories and online stores: we collect from your warehouse in any Saudi city, export the load on Fasah, drive it through the Empty Quarter (Rub al Khali) border crossing to Muscat, Sohar, Nizwa or Salalah, and deliver it to the Omani importer’s warehouse once it has cleared on the Bayan system. Loads from Riyadh and the Eastern Province reach Muscat and Sohar in 3–5 working days, loads from Jeddah, Makkah, Madinah and Taif in 5–7 days, and loads from Tabuk in about 6–8 days. Gulf International Shipping rates start from SAR 5.5 per kg for groupage to Muscat, SAR 780 per ton for part loads, SAR 4,140 for a dedicated truck from Riyadh and SAR 8,280 for a 20 ft container carried by truck.
A trader selling into the Omani market needs more from a carrier than a truck. You need to know whether your goods will pay customs duty, who files the declaration on the Omani side, and how many consignments you can combine in one trip to bring the per-kilo cost down. This page is written for that reader, and it follows the decisions you make before the first shipment: the route, then the certificate of origin and tax, then the size of the load, then the paperwork and delivery.

Which route does a goods truck take to Oman?
Before the Empty Quarter road opened, a Saudi truck bound for Oman had to cross the UAE: out through Al Batha, in through Ghuwaifat, then across the Emirates to one of the Omani border posts. That meant three customs authorities instead of two, an extra transit declaration and more waiting at every border. Today there is a direct road. It starts at the Al Batha–Haradh road junction, runs 564 km through the sands to the Empty Quarter border crossing, which is the only land crossing between the two countries, and continues 161 km inside Oman to the wilayat of Ibri in Al Dhahirah Governorate.
That road changed the maths for traders. The cargo zone at the crossing is designed to handle about 966 trucks a day in both directions, commercial traffic moves around the clock, and waiting time varies with the pressure on the day. From Ibri, trucks fan out: east to Nizwa and on to Muscat, about 244 km away; north to Buraimi and Sohar; or south via Adam and Haima to Salalah and Duqm. That is why we tell clients that Ibri, Nizwa and Buraimi are the Omani markets closest to Saudi Arabia by road, not Muscat as many assume.
These times cover loading, the road, formalities at both borders and delivery, and they shift with congestion at the crossing, the Fasah slot and clearance time on Bayan. For Salalah and Duqm we add about two days, since Salalah alone is roughly 1,047 km from Muscat by road.
When do we use the UAE route?
Our trucks take the direct Empty Quarter road as standard. We switch to the UAE route (Al Batha, then one of the UAE–Oman crossings) in two cases: deliveries to Musandam Governorate in the north, which can only be reached by land through the UAE, or exceptional congestion at the crossing that makes a detour faster. In that case we file a transit declaration and tell you the difference in time and cost in advance.
Do Saudi goods pay customs duty when they enter Oman?
This is the first question every trader asks, and the answer depends on where the goods were made, not where they were shipped from. Oman and Saudi Arabia are both members of the GCC customs union, so a product manufactured in the Kingdom enters Oman free of customs duty when it travels with a GCC certificate of origin. Goods you imported from China or Turkey and now re-export from your Riyadh warehouse to Muscat are non-GCC in origin, and normally pay 5% customs duty on their value including freight and insurance.
On top of duty comes VAT. Oman levies 5% value added tax on imports, calculated on the value of the goods with freight and insurance plus the customs duty. The point Saudi exporters often miss is that a GCC certificate of origin removes the customs duty but not the import VAT on commercial shipments, which is payable on taxable goods unless an item is specifically exempt.
The gap in that last row is what a trader loses by forgetting the certificate of origin: roughly SAR 500 on every ten thousand, which can exceed the freight bill itself. That is why we ask for the certificate before loading, not after the truck reaches the border. One more caveat: the figures above are illustrations, and the actual charges are calculated by the Omani system on the declared value and the tariff line of each item.
Who pays the duty and VAT?
In commercial shipping the Omani importer usually pays at clearance, because the declaration is filed in their name. Agree with your customer in Oman beforehand on who carries the charges and state it on the invoice, so the truck is not left in the customs yard waiting for someone to pay.
Approximate prices for shipping goods from Saudi Arabia to Oman
We collected the rates that carriers publish on the Oman lane from Riyadh, Dammam and other cities, and set Gulf International Shipping starting prices below the lowest of them. The first figure in each cell is our starting price; the second is what the same item typically reaches in the market when the load grows or the delivery wilayat is further away.
Note: a load leaving Riyadh or the Eastern Province is in Muscat or Sohar after 3–5 working days, one from the western cities after 5–7 and one from Tabuk after about 6–8, with Salalah and Duqm a couple of days further; flown cargo is delivered within 48–72 hours.
Starting prices for common trade items
Rates to Salalah, Duqm and Musandam are higher than to Muscat because of the distance inside Oman, so tell us the exact wilayat and industrial area. For city-by-city tables, see shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Oman.
Part load, full truck or container?
The long distance to Oman makes this decision weigh more than on the short Gulf lanes. On a road of more than 1,400 km from Riyadh, a truck costs the full trip whether it is full or not, so you either share it with other shippers or fill it yourself.
- Groupage by the kilo or the ton (LTL): for traders sending one or two pallets or a few cases. your bill covers only the space your pallets occupy; the trade-off is that the truck leaves on the groupage schedule. From SAR 780 per ton and SAR 5.5 per kg to Muscat.
- Dedicated truck (FTL): once your load nears half a truck or more, a full truck becomes cheaper per kilo and faster, because it leaves on your day and makes no stops to pick up other cargo. From SAR 4,140 for a small truck from Riyadh.
- Container on a truck: for goods that must stay closed and sealed from factory to importer’s warehouse, or that will be stored in the container after arrival. From SAR 8,280 for a 20 ft container.

A rule of thumb we share with clients: below three pallets, groupage usually wins; above ten pallets, a dedicated truck is cheaper and faster; in between, we price both options and send you the comparison in writing on WhatsApp. Whatever the mode, we strap the pallets, fit corner guards and stretch-wrap them so nothing shifts on a long road through hundreds of kilometres of sand.
What goods do we ship to Oman?
Dates, food and chilled cargo
Saudi dates are among the goods we ship most to Oman, along with coffee, spices, canned food and packaged sweets. On this lane the issue is not distance alone but heat: the box of a closed truck on a desert road gets far hotter than the air outside. So we move sensitive food, chocolate, soft dates and dairy in refrigerated trucks set to a fixed temperature, with chilled food from SAR 825. Food usually needs a health certificate or certificate of origin and clear labels showing production and expiry dates, and some items are inspected on the Omani side before release.
Spare parts, building materials and equipment
Car spare parts, small industrial equipment, finishing materials, ceramics and electrical tools mostly travel on pallets in groupage, with spare parts from SAR 735 and small industrial equipment from SAR 1,100 from Riyadh. Heavy equipment, generators and machinery need a flatbed or lowbed truck depending on weight and size, from SAR 4,600 from the Eastern Province, and we ask for dimensions and weight before pricing because some loads need an oversize permit.
Online store inventory
A Saudi store selling to customers in Muscat and Sohar has two options: send each order as a separate parcel, or move stock to a warehouse in Oman and fulfil locally. Single parcels up to 5 kg to Muscat cost from SAR 41; the second suits a store whose orders run into dozens a week, because it turns the cost of hundreds of parcels into one pallet shipment. For single orders, see cartons and parcels shipping to Oman.
Documents required to ship goods to Oman
On the Saudi side, the carrier must book the truck’s arrival slot at the land port on the Fasah platform before setting off and arrive within that window. On the Omani side, a registered customs broker files the declaration on Bayan and attends inspection when required. People often mix the two up: Fasah is the Saudi platform, Bayan is the Omani system, and each side has its own paperwork.
The TIR system
Oman applies the TIR international road transport system, which lets a sealed truck pass through transit countries without repeated inspection. That helps on shipments that must go through the UAE; a direct shipment over the Empty Quarter is normally cleared at the crossing or at a customs centre inside Oman.
Prohibited and restricted goods in commercial shipping to Oman
Oman Customs publishes a list of prohibited goods that follows the unified GCC customs system. The items that matter most to traders:
- Weapons and ammunition of all kinds, items that conceal weapons, and toy guns and rifles that resemble real ones.
- Clothing and gear resembling military uniforms, rifle scopes, night-vision scopes and stun devices.
- Counterfeit goods or goods breaching approved specifications or intellectual property rights, which are usually seized whatever the quantity.
- Ivory and products of endangered species, narcotics and psychotropic substances.
- Items needing prior approval: wireless devices, drones, medicines and medical products, and some chemicals and pesticides.
If your product is new to the Omani market, send us its name, description and a photo before loading so we can check its status with the broker. Checking before shipping is far cheaper than a truck turned back at the border.
Delivery to cities and industrial areas in Oman

We deliver goods to the door of the importer’s warehouse or shop in almost every governorate. Sohar in North Al Batinah is a major destination for goods as an industrial and logistics hub, reached from Ibri via Buraimi or along the Batinah road. Muscat is the biggest market for shops and distributors, Nizwa and Ibri are the markets closest to the crossing, and Salalah and Duqm in the south need about two extra days.
Loads starting in Jeddah or the other western cities need roughly two more days than shown. At delivery we need an Omani phone number for the receiving contact, and we notify them a day before the truck arrives, because some warehouses only receive during set hours.
A sea option for western factories
For factories in Jeddah and Makkah shipping regular containers to southern Oman, there is a sea option for commercial containers from Jeddah port to Salalah port on request. We compare the sailing schedule and cost with the road route for you; small and mid-sized loads stay on the road over the Empty Quarter.
Air freight for urgent goods to Muscat
Road is the backbone for goods, but some shipments cannot wait days: a spare part that has stopped a production line, samples a buyer needs before signing, or seasonal stock running late. For these we fly from Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and Madinah airports to Muscat International Airport, where nonstop flights operate, and from Taif on nonstop flights according to the airline schedule. Flying time is roughly two and a quarter hours from Riyadh and three and a quarter from Jeddah, while warehouse to warehouse you should plan on 48–72 hours, depending on flights and clearance.
Gulf International Shipping prices air cargo from SAR 41 a kilo, billed on the higher of actual and volumetric weight. For comparison, groupage by road to Muscat starts from SAR 5.5 per kg, so air costs roughly seven times more and we recommend it only for light, urgent loads. How is the cost of shipping goods to Oman calculated?
- Weight or volume: light, bulky goods are charged by volume, small heavy goods by weight.
- Load type: groupage, dedicated or container, chilled or ambient.
- Loading city: the further your city is from Riyadh, the longer the haul before the Empty Quarter road begins, so Jeddah or Tabuk loads cost more than Riyadh or Dammam ones.
- Delivery wilayat: Muscat, Sohar and Nizwa at one rate; Salalah, Duqm and Musandam higher.
- Clearance and charges: brokerage on both sides, then Omani duty and VAT where due, normally paid by the importer.
- Extras: packing, strapping, storage and insurance on the value of the goods.
A worked example: a Riyadh trader sends three pallets weighing one and a half tons to a distributor in Muscat. In groupage the ton starts from SAR 780, so the freight starts from about SAR 1,170 before clearance, with the final figure set once we know the dimensions and type of goods. If the goods are Saudi-made with a certificate of origin, the distributor pays no customs duty, only VAT on taxable items.
The cheapest way to ship goods to Oman
For most traders the cheapest combination is groupage plus a GCC certificate of origin: groupage splits the cost of the truck between several shippers, and the certificate removes customs duty on Saudi-made goods. Then comes planning: combine your orders into one shipment every two weeks instead of scattered small ones, and build pallets to a standard size and as tall as the goods allow, because empty space inside the truck is paid for too. If your customer is in Salalah and your goods are in the west in container quantities, compare the long road haul with the sea option from Jeddah.
Mistakes that hold up a goods truck on the way to Oman
- Forgetting the certificate of origin: you pay duty on a Saudi product that could have entered duty-free.
- Invoice and load out of step: a different carton count or weight opens the door to full inspection and delays the truck.
- No Omani importer ready: the Omani declaration needs a receiving party with correct details.
- Writing just “Amman/Oman” in Arabic paperwork: «عمان» alone can be read as Amman in Jordan, so write Sultanate of Oman and the wilayat.
- Sending sensitive food in an ambient truck: desert heat alone is enough to spoil it.
- Leaving a restricted item unapproved: one wireless device or medical product can stop the whole load.
