Land freight from Dammam to Oman with Gulf International Shipping runs in closed trucks that load in Dammam, Khobar, Jubail and Al-Ahsa, cross the border at the Empty Quarter (Rub al Khali) port — the one direct road crossing between Saudi Arabia and Oman — and unload in Muscat, Sohar, Nizwa, Ibri or Salalah. Depending on where we load, the truck covers roughly 1,300–1,500 km; Muscat and Sohar are typically reached in 3–5 working days and Salalah or Duqm in about 5–7 days. Eastern Province pricing opens at SAR 73 for a personal parcel of up to 5 kg, with cartons weighing up to 10 kg from SAR 92; a bedroom set begins at SAR 1,100, a sedan or 4×4 at SAR 1,840, and a truck-mounted 20 ft box at SAR 8,280.
People in the Eastern Province often assume Dammam must be the Saudi city closest to Oman because it sits on the Gulf coast. In practice, a truck from Dammam and a truck from Riyadh merge onto the same desert road hundreds of kilometres before the border, so the head start is small. What really sets the Eastern Province apart is its factories and warehouses, its quick access to the Empty Quarter road through Al-Ahsa, and the steady flow of commercial cargo heading for Sohar and Muscat. That is why this guide speaks to both households and traders, and why it opens with the route: the road explains both the timing and the price.

Which road does land freight take from Dammam to Oman?
From Dammam the truck heads south to Al-Ahsa and usually continues towards Batha until it reaches the Batha–Haradh junction. That junction is where the Empty Quarter road begins, roughly 25 km short of the Batha border post that leads into the UAE. Oman-bound trucks turn south here instead of carrying on east, and enter a 564 km highway inside Saudi Arabia: around 319 km to the Shaybah oil field, then around 246 km to the Empty Quarter border port.
Al-Ahsa is more than a waypoint on this trip. It is the Eastern Province gateway to the desert road, so for customers in Hofuf, Mubarraz and the surrounding villages we load right there instead of hauling the cargo back to Dammam first. When our warehouse consolidates loads from Dammam, Khobar, Jubail and Qatif, the groupage truck leaves on that same line, and a customer in Jubail does not pay for a detour simply because his goods start a little further from Al-Ahsa.

The desert stretch is long and has few services; the authorities built lay-bys for trucks and cars at intervals of about 25 km. Our drivers know where to refuel before the empty section begins, and they set off with full tanks, drinking water and basic spare parts. Customers never see these details, but they are the difference between a truck that arrives on schedule and one waiting for help in the sand.
After the Saudi exit, the truck enters the Omani border post opposite it in Al Dhahirah, then drives 161 km to Ibri, the first Omani town on the road. From Ibri the routes split: about 244 km and roughly three hours to Muscat along the interior road, less to Nizwa and Buraimi; Sohar loads head north towards Al Batinah, while Salalah loads turn south through Adam, Haima and Thumrait on a much longer run.
Is Dammam closer to Oman than Riyadh?
Not by much. Riyadh trucks drop south to Haradh, Dammam trucks drop south to Al-Ahsa, and both reach the same junction. From there everyone shares roughly 969 km to Muscat. So be wary of anyone promising your Dammam shipment at a Muscat doorstep in 48 hours: the driving alone is close to 15 hours, before the border, clearance and local delivery.
How many days does land freight from Dammam to Oman need?
We count transit from the day we load to the day we deliver, not just from the moment the truck pulls away. Most of the time is not lost on the road but at three stops: waiting for a groupage load to fill, the Fasah appointment at the Empty Quarter port, and Omani customs clearance on the Bayan system. Here is what we normally work to from the Eastern Province.
A dedicated load — a whole truck for one customer — usually saves a day or more because it does not wait for consolidation and leaves the factory gate or the house straight after loading. Smaller shipments join the next scheduled groupage departure from the Eastern Province. Either way, we tell you the expected departure day before we load and share the truck’s position when it reaches the border and again once it has crossed.
Border pressure also changes. At peak times queues of commercial trucks can build up, and no shipping company controls that. What we do control is booking the Fasah slot in advance and having the paperwork ready before arrival, so the truck is not held for hours over a missing document. That is why we say “3–5 working days” rather than promising a specific hour.
Approximate land freight prices from Dammam to Oman
Gulf International Shipping sets its Eastern Province rates from the lowest prices published by carriers on the Dammam–Oman lane, then starts below them. Where the published price for the same item from Riyadh or Tabuk was lower than Dammam’s, we used the lower figure, because Dammam is no further from Oman than Riyadh and should not cost more. Each row shows two figures: the starting rate on the left, and on the right the level a bill commonly reaches for larger volumes or wooden crating.
Note: Muscat and Sohar deliveries from Dammam usually land on day 3 to 5 (working days) and Salalah or Duqm in 5–7 days, varying with congestion at the border, the timing of the Fasah slot and the pace of Omani clearance; an air parcel from Dammam airport arrives in 48–72 hours.
Starting rate per item from the Eastern Province
Delivering to Salalah, Duqm or Musandam costs more than Muscat because the truck runs much further after Ibri; the Muscat–Salalah leg on its own runs to roughly 1,047 km. We therefore do not publish a fixed figure for those destinations; we price them once we know the volume and address and send the figure on WhatsApp before loading. Shipping goods from the Eastern Province to Oman
Most of what leaves the Eastern Province for Oman is not furniture but cargo: building materials, plastics and packed chemicals from Jubail, spare parts and equipment from the Dammam industrial cities, dates and food from Al-Ahsa, and distributors’ stock bound for warehouses in Sohar and Muscat. Each type loads differently and needs different papers, so our first two questions to a trader are simple: is the cargo Saudi-made, and does it need a set temperature?

We collect from the First, Second and Third Industrial Cities in Dammam, from Jubail Industrial City, from warehouses in Khobar, Dhahran and Qatif, and from Al-Ahsa. Every carton is numbered and every pallet is logged on a packing list that matches the invoice, because any gap between the invoice and the truck’s contents means delay at the Omani inspection. For chilled cargo such as fresh dates and foodstuffs we use refrigerated trucks set to an agreed temperature; chilled food starts at SAR 825 for a small consignment.
Part load or full truck?
If your cargo is a pallet or two, groupage (LTL) is the cheaper option: you pay by weight and volume, from SAR 780 per tonne, and a trade consignment up to 100 kg starts at SAR 1,100. If your goods fill half a truck or more, a full truckload (FTL) or a container on a truck is better: it leaves on your day and is opened only by customs, with a 20 ft box costing SAR 8,280 upwards. Heavy machinery travels on suitable trailers from SAR 4,600, depending on weight and dimensions.
Saudi-made goods travelling with a GCC certificate of origin enter Oman free of customs duty under the GCC customs union, though import VAT normally still applies to commercial shipments. Stock that first came into the Kingdom from non-GCC countries and is then sent on from the Eastern Province usually pays 5% duty plus 5% VAT, the VAT base being goods plus freight plus the duty itself — a point many traders forget when setting their selling price in Oman. For the full commercial picture, read goods shipping from Saudi Arabia to Oman.
Have these ready before you call
Commercial invoice, packing list with weights, certificate of origin for Saudi-made goods, commercial registration, and the Omani importer’s details and clearing-agent account. With these we can file the export declaration on Fasah and prepare the Bayan clearance before the truck moves.
Moving household furniture from Dammam and Khobar to Muscat
Families relocating from the Eastern Province to Oman often live in residential compounds in Dhahran and Khobar, or in villas in Dammam and Al-Ahsa, and move into flats in Al Khuwair, Al Mawaleh and Al Azaiba in Muscat, or villas in Seeb. We start with a survey, in person or by video call, then advise whether groupage is enough or you need a dedicated truck. Bedrooms start at SAR 1,100, a sofa or majlis set at SAR 825 while moving the entire house begins at SAR 3,220.
The real threat to furniture on this trip is heat and dust rather than the road itself. We wrap wood in bubble film, then corrugated board, then stretch film; glass and mirrors go into wooden crates; beds and wardrobes are dismantled, numbered, and their screws bagged and taped to each piece. Everything travels in a sealed box body so dust cannot work its way in over hundreds of kilometres of sand, and we photograph your belongings before loading so you can compare on delivery.
If this is your first move to Oman as a resident, or you are an Omani citizen returning from the Kingdom, your used furniture may be exempt from duty and VAT on conditions: the items are for your own use rather than sale, they come from the country where you lived, and you present your residence visa, passport or ID card with a full inventory. New appliances still in their boxes are generally treated as goods. Details are in Oman used household goods customs, and the full house-move process is in furniture moving from Saudi Arabia to Oman.
Car shipping from Dammam to Oman
Gulf International Shipping moves a sedan or SUV from the Eastern Province to Oman from SAR 1,840 on a car carrier, while luxury and sports cars travel in an enclosed carrier from SAR 4,140. Cars generally arrive within the same window as other road freight to Muscat: 3–5 working days.
Before booking, check two conditions on the Omani side: Omani customs only admit private cars younger than 7 years, and the car must carry an export certificate from the state that registered it — in other words a Saudi export certificate, issued once the export is completed on Absher — because the Royal Oman Police require it for vehicles coming from GCC states. Cars normally pay 5% customs duty and 5% VAT. We explain the papers, the costs and registration step by step in car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Oman.
Air freight from Dammam to Muscat
When a shipment cannot wait for the road, we book space on a flight from Dammam to Muscat International Airport. Oman Air and SalamAir both fly this route nonstop and the flight is short, but most of the time goes on collection, delivery and clearance, so we quote 48–72 hours door to door.
- Air parcel up to 5 kg: from SAR 138
- Air carton up to 10 kg: from SAR 184
- Larger consignments per kg: SAR 41 per kilo upwards; the billable weight is the greater of the scale reading and the dimensional weight
- Best for: documents, trade samples, urgent spare parts, prescription medicines that are permitted, and small devices
Air freight does not suit furniture or large appliances, because the per-kilo rate pushes the cost far above road. If you are sending to Salalah, we book on the flights available to Salalah airport according to the airline schedule, or fly to Muscat and finish by road. Weights and airports are covered in air freight from Saudi Arabia to Oman.
Can you ship by sea from Dammam to Oman?
We do not route Oman shipments from Dammam by sea. The Empty Quarter road is direct and moves goods between two doorsteps with just a pair of customs posts, without unloading at a port, waiting for a vessel and reloading. For Oman, our single sea arrangement is a Jeddah–Salalah container service for trade cargo, on request; furniture, cars and small shipments from the Eastern Province go by road.
Documents required for land freight from Dammam to Oman
A tip from experience: label your inventory with clear names such as “kitchen utensils”, “winter clothes” or “books”, never “personal effects” or “miscellaneous”. Household shipments are usually fully inspected on the Omani side, and a clear list shortens the process. Books, films and software may need to be checked by the media authority before release, so pack them in separate, clearly labelled cartons.
What duty and VAT apply to shipments entering Oman?
Oman’s VAT rate is 5%, and most goods made outside the GCC also carry a 5% customs duty; the VAT is worked out on the value including freight and insurance, plus the duty. Take a shipment of new appliances made outside the Gulf with a value, freight and insurance included, of SAR 1,000: duty is SAR 50, then VAT is 5% of SAR 1,050, or SAR 52.50, so you would pay roughly SAR 102.50 in Oman.
- Saudi product with a GCC origin certificate: no customs duty; import VAT normally still applies to commercial shipments
- Used furniture of a new resident or returning citizen: exempt on the conditions above, subject to inspection
- New non-GCC furniture or appliances: usually 5% duty and 5% VAT
- Cars: not covered by the personal-effects exemption; duty and VAT apply
What is prohibited from entering Oman?
The Omani customs list of banned items includes drugs, explosives and any weapon (replicas too), military-style clothing and kit, toy pistols that look real, rifle and night-vision optics, tasers and stun devices, ivory, and fakes or goods failing the approved standards. Household-removal guides add items that need a permit or are generally refused, such as walkie-talkies, drones, e-cigarettes and perishable food. We check any doubtful item with you before loading, because one prohibited article can hold up an entire groupage truck.

Delivery across Oman’s governorates
Our coverage is not limited to the capital: we deliver to the door in all eleven governorates. The first area a truck reaches after the border is Al Dhahirah, after which each load peels off towards its own address.

Sohar in particular is a frequent destination for Eastern Province trade cargo, as an industrial and logistics hub in North Al Batinah. We deliver to its industrial zones and warehouses as readily as to residential districts, and arrange a forklift or manual unloading depending on what is available at the receiving site.
When do we use the UAE route instead of the Empty Quarter?
The normal route for our Eastern Province trucks is the Empty Quarter port, because it is direct and crosses a single border. Before that road opened, trucks had to transit the UAE: Batha to Ghuwaifat, then out of the UAE into Oman through Khatmat Malaha, Al Wajajah or Hafeet. We still use that route in specific cases: deliveries to Musandam, which is normally reachable overland only through the UAE, or when the Empty Quarter port is unusually backed up. Those shipments pass through three customs regimes under transit rules, so formalities take longer, and you hear the extra days and riyals from us before booking. More on the crossing itself in the Empty Quarter border crossing guide.
Mistakes people make when shipping from the Eastern Province to Oman
- Trusting a “48-hour” promise: a Dammam shipment usually needs 3–5 working days to Muscat; anything shorter ignores the border and clearance
- Declaring new appliances as used furniture: new items still in their boxes are generally treated as goods and pay duty and VAT
- Forgetting the certificate of origin: without it a Saudi product may pay customs duty it would otherwise be exempt from
- Leaving belongings inside a shipped car: customs expect the car to be empty, so pack your things in cartons that travel separately
- Sending a car aged 7 years or more: a private car is usually refused unless it is under 7 years old
- Writing “miscellaneous” on the inventory: it lengthens inspection; name the contents of each carton instead
