Gulf International Shipping moves land freight from Saudi Arabia to Qatar in closed trucks that leave the Kingdom at the Salwa border post in Al-Udaid governorate and enter Qatar at Abu Samra, the only road crossing between the two countries. The quickest runs start in Dammam and Al-Ahsa, at one to three days to Doha; Riyadh comes next at two to four days, and western cities such as Jeddah, Makkah and Taif need three to five working days. Gulf International Shipping rates begin at SAR 7.5 a kilo in a shared truck, SAR 120 per carton (30 kg max), SAR 1,470 for a bedroom set, SAR 1,660 for a dyna of your own and SAR 1,100 for a sedan riding a multi-car carrier.
This guide is for people who want to understand the road itself before they book: how many kilometres the truck covers from your city, which kind of truck fits the volume you have, what actually happens at Salwa and Abu Samra, and why two shipments on the same road can take different times. Prices, documents and booking steps follow at the end.

How far is Qatar from Saudi Arabia by road? The route from each city
Every road shipment bound for Qatar funnels through one gate: the Salwa crossing. Saudipedia describes it as the only port of entry linking the Kingdom with Qatar. You will find it at the town of Salwa, part of Al-Udaid governorate on the Kingdom’s eastern edge, where ZATCA officers work alongside the Border Guard. In practice, the difference between a load from Khobar and one from Tabuk is never the crossing; it is the length of the road leading to it and the number of cities the truck passes on the way.
From Riyadh the truck heads east on the Khurais road to Hofuf in Al-Ahsa, then turns south-east to Salwa, a leg of roughly 460 km on its own. From Dammam, Khobar and Dhahran the truck drives south to Hofuf and on to Salwa, which makes the Eastern Province the closest part of the Kingdom to Doha. Western cities such as Jeddah, Makkah, Taif and Madinah cross the entire country: the truck normally passes through Riyadh, or the load is consolidated there, before continuing on the same road to Al-Ahsa and Salwa.
Note: every distance here is a rounded road figure that shifts with the route and the pick-up point; transit times cover loading, both border posts and delivery inside Doha.

Each origin city has its own page with local loading details: shipping from Dammam to Qatar, shipping from Riyadh to Qatar, shipping from Makkah to Qatar, shipping from Jeddah to Qatar, shipping from Taif to Qatar, shipping from Madinah to Qatar, shipping from Tabuk to Qatar.
From Salwa to Doha: the last 90 kilometres
Once exit formalities at Salwa are done, the truck moves a short distance to the Qatari post at Abu Samra, where the data filed in advance is matched and anything that needs inspecting is checked. From Abu Samra to Doha is only about 90 km, so a truck that clears in the morning can usually deliver in Doha, Al Rayyan or Al Wakrah the same day. Deliveries to Al Khor, Al Dhakhira and the north, or west to Dukhan, need extra road time, and we agree the slot with the consignee before the truck leaves the border.
Which truck suits your shipment to Qatar?
The question that moves price and transit time more than anything else is this: will your goods travel in a shared load with other customers, or in a truck reserved for you? At Gulf International Shipping we decide that once we know the rough volume, the type of goods and the delivery date you need, because the wrong truck costs you either money you did not need to spend or days of waiting you could have avoided.

Shared load or dedicated truck?
In a shared load the bill covers just the room your goods take up, measured by the kilo or the cubic metre, and departure waits until the Qatar-bound truck is full. That wait may be a day, or a little longer in quiet periods, but it brings the cost down for anyone sending ten cartons or a single bedroom set.
A dedicated truck is loaded at your door and leaves straight away, and its doors open only at the consignee’s address in Qatar. It is the better fit for a whole household, for someone with a fixed handover date for a flat in Lusail or Al Wakrah, or for a trader who does not want his stock mixed with anyone else’s. Many customers miss the fact that a dedicated truck becomes cheaper than a shared one once the shipment grows; the cost section below shows this with numbers.
Approximate land freight prices from Saudi Arabia to Qatar
The table sums up where our prices on the Salwa road begin, below the rates rival carriers advertise. Each cell holds two numbers: the lower is the entry price, the higher is what bulkier or trickier loads tend to reach.
Note: road transit runs one to three days for Eastern Province loads, two to four for Riyadh and three to five working days for Jeddah, Makkah and Taif; by air it drops to 24–48 hours.
Land freight prices by item and volume
Why do prices differ from the Western Region?
The prices above are based on loading in Riyadh and the Central Region. A truck from Jeddah, Makkah or Taif covers more than twice the distance, so those cities have their own price table on the Jeddah to Qatar page; every city appears in shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Qatar.
The truck’s journey day by day from Riyadh to Doha
Customers always ask where their things are right now. The simplest answer is to walk through the journey as it really runs for a furniture shipment in a dedicated dyna from north Riyadh to Doha; a shared load adds consolidation time before day one.
The journey can shrink to two days when the paperwork is complete and the border is quiet, and it can stretch by a day if arrival falls on the Qatari weekend or the load needs an extra inspection. That is why we give customers a time window rather than a single promise, and update them on WhatsApp at every stage.
What happens at the Salwa and Abu Samra border posts?
A truck does not wait at the border for its paperwork to start; the work begins earlier. On the Saudi side the load is entered on the Fasah e-platform in advance, so its file reaches Salwa before the truck does. Across the line, the clearing agent must be set up on Al Nadeeb, the Qatari e-customs system, with authority to act for the consignee; for personal furniture this normally means a Qatari mobile number tied to the consignee’s QID.
Because the crossing works around the clock, a truck that arrives at night does not have to wait for morning if its documents are complete. Queues do vary with the season and with commercial truck traffic, so we never promise an exact crossing hour.
Duties and taxes on entering Qatar
- VAT: Qatar does not currently charge VAT or sales tax, a key difference from the UAE road
- Customs duty: normally 5% on goods originating outside the GCC
- Products made in Saudi Arabia: normally handled like local products thanks to the Gulf customs union, provided a Gulf origin certificate travels with them
- Foreign goods already duty-paid in the Kingdom: double duty is avoided through the GCC clearing (statistical statement) mechanism
- Excise tax: Qatar levies 100% on tobacco products and energy drinks and half that, 50%, on fizzy drinks
Used furniture belonging to a resident arriving to work for the first time has a conditional exemption from Qatar’s General Authority of Customs: the goods have to be used, reach Qatar no later than six months after their owner first entered, and be backed by a letter from the employer, the residence permit and a list of every item, with a pledge to keep them for a year. New appliances and cars fall outside it. Qatar used household goods customs explains the rest, and the crossing step by step is in the Salwa and Abu Samra border crossing guide.
Watch the six-month window
If you enter Qatar for work and ship your furniture more than 6 months later, 5% duty may be charged instead of the exemption. Book early and send us your entry date so we can plan the move around it.

Moving furniture to Qatar by road
The road to Qatar is fairly long from Riyadh and very long from the west, and hundreds of kilometres of vibration are furniture’s first enemy. So we dismantle large pieces such as wardrobes and beds and bag their screws separately by number, wrap wood in bubble film and then moving blankets, put glass and large screens into wooden crates, and photograph each piece before loading so the photo inventory is the reference on delivery.
On arrival the crew reassembles bedrooms and kitchens in Doha, Lusail or Al Wakrah as they were. For customers relying on the used-furniture exemption, we prepare the detailed item list in the format Qatari customs expect. More on the furniture moving from Saudi Arabia to Qatar page.
Shipping cars by road from Saudi Arabia to Qatar
In practice a car reaches Qatar by road only: on an open multi-car carrier, on a hydraulic flatbed for a single car, or in an enclosed carrier for luxury models. Before booking you need to know which path fits you: final export if the car will be registered in Qatar, or temporary entry with a customs carnet (triptyque) if it is visiting and coming back.
Final export usually involves an export certificate from the traffic department, Saudi plates swapped for export plates, an inspection certificate that is still valid, proof that no traffic fines are outstanding, the registration card, the owner’s ID and an electronic authorisation in the carrier’s name. If a bank financed the car, its approval is needed. On arrival, age is the big hurdle: Qatar generally refuses light vehicles more than five model years old, though exceptions exist, among them classics past 35 years. A car whose steering was moved from the right, or one with a history of flooding, fire or frame damage, will not be let in. Customs then takes 5% of the car’s value, with no VAT on top, before the technical inspection and registration with Qatari traffic, which must happen within 14 days of the road entry.
- Leave roughly a quarter tank of fuel
- Remove every personal item; nothing travels inside the car
- We photograph the car from 12 angles before loading and send you the pictures
- Hand over a spare key, if you have one, with the registration card

Air freight from Saudi Arabia to Qatar: when does it beat the truck?
The truck is the natural choice for most shipments to Qatar because it delivers door to door at a far lower cost. Some cases still call for air: urgent official papers or trade samples, luggage the owner needs in the first days in Doha, or spare parts for a machine that has stopped. These arrive at Hamad International Airport, and air freight usually takes 24 to 48 hours door to door.
Our air rates begin at SAR 1,110 per cubic metre for furniture and personal effects, and at SAR 41 a kilo for small urgent parcels. Airlines bill by space as well as weight: multiply the three dimensions in centimetres, divide by 5,000, and whichever is larger, that figure or the scale weight, is charged. More in air freight from Saudi Arabia to Qatar.
What about sea freight?
Between King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam and Qatar’s Hamad Port, sea carriage can be arranged on request for big commercial containers, typically 5–10 days. It rarely helps private customers: a truck from Dammam arrives in 1 to 3 days and delivers to the door, whereas a container needs port clearance followed by inland haulage.

How is the cost of land freight to Qatar calculated?
The final price is not a fixed figure because no two shipments are alike. These are the factors we price on:
- Volume and weight: by cubic metre for furniture and belongings, by kg for parcels and cartons
- Truck type: shared is cheaper for small volumes, dedicated is better value for large ones
- Loading city: the distance to Doha ranges from about 300 km from Al-Ahsa to about 1,900 km from Tabuk
- Delivery area in Qatar: Doha is closer than Al Khor or Dukhan
- Add-ons: taking furniture apart and rebuilding it, timber crating, storage, and cover on the declared value
- Building conditions: upper floors without a lift, or a long carry from the truck to the door
A worked example: when does a dedicated truck become cheaper?
Say you have 3 cubic metres of mixed belongings in Riyadh. In a shared load starting from SAR 415 per cubic metre, that starts at about SAR 1,245, which beats booking a whole dyna. At 6 cubic metres the same sum reaches about SAR 2,490, while a dedicated dyna starts from SAR 1,660 and leaves without waiting. The rule of thumb: once your goods pass about 4 cubic metres, ask us about a dedicated dyna before choosing the shared option.
The cheapest way to ship by road from Saudi Arabia to Qatar
- Choose shared freight if you have few items and do not need them on a specific day
- Sell or give away old furniture you will not use in Qatar instead of paying to move it
- Pack clothes and books in firm cartons rather than half-empty large suitcases
- In the Eastern Province, hand the shipment over in Dammam or Al-Ahsa rather than waiting for consolidation in Riyadh
- Reserve ahead of peak weeks, around the close of the school year and the run-up to Ramadan, when trucks fill quickly
Common mistakes with land freight to Qatar
- Shipping furniture long after arrival: misses the six-month window for the customs exemption
- A vague contents list: writing “household items” instead of listing pieces slows matching at Abu Samra
- Shipping a new appliance in its box: new appliances are not exempt, so keep the invoice
- Leaving things inside the car: can hold the car at the border and risks confiscation
- Ignoring the car’s age: light vehicles older than 5 years are usually not accepted for registration in Qatar
- Not booking the lift in Lusail or Doha: many towers require an advance booking to unload
