Gulf International Shipping moves shipments from Dammam to Qatar by road through the Salwa crossing and Abu Samra on the Qatari side, and most loads reach Doha within 1 to 3 days door to door, because the drive is only about 400 km. Our published Dammam prices start from SAR 138 for a carton, SAR 1,100 for a small two-room apartment, SAR 1,380 for a full bedroom with dismantling and assembly, SAR 1,100 for a sedan on an open carrier, and SAR 1,110 per cubic metre when you fly your goods instead.
We collect from Dammam, Al Khobar, Dhahran, Qatif, Jubail, Abqaiq and Al-Ahsa, and deliver across Qatar, with Al Rayyan, Doha, Al Khor, Lusail, Al Wakrah and the smaller towns all on our list. This guide explains why the Eastern Province has the shortest land route from the Kingdom to Qatar, how a shipment moves hour by hour, what each item actually costs, and what Qatari customs expect before the truck crosses the border.

Why is Dammam the shortest road route from Saudi Arabia to Qatar?
The Salwa crossing sits inside the Eastern Province itself, in Al-Udaid governorate south of Al-Ahsa. A Dammam shipment never leaves its own region until it reaches the border line. A Riyadh shipment, by contrast, drives about 460 km just to reach Salwa, and loads from Jeddah, Makkah or Madinah cover more than a thousand kilometres before they even enter the Eastern Province. That gap shows up directly in transit time, in cost and in how many times your goods are handled.
Since Salwa is the sole road link to Qatar, every truck heading to Doha from any Saudi city eventually passes Al-Ahsa and Salwa. A Dammam customer starts at the point other cities only reach after a day or more on the road. That is why Gulf International Shipping can often load in the morning and clear the Saudi side the same evening or early the next day.
Eastern Province residents also have options others do not: a very short flight from King Fahd International Airport to Doha, and a sea option for commercial containers from King Abdulaziz Port. Below we explain when each one makes sense, and when the truck remains both faster and cheaper.
Route and transit time from Dammam to Qatar
- Distance: about 400 km from Dammam to Doha, depending on the road and the pickup point
- Dammam Port to Salwa: about 297 km, or roughly 3 hours 45 minutes for a truck
- Road freight: 1 to 3 days, counting loading, both border formalities and the final drop-off
- Air freight: one to two days from collection to delivery
- Sea freight: for commercial containers on request, roughly 5 to 10 days
Note: times are approximate and include customs at Salwa and Abu Samra; allow an extra day at peak periods or if paperwork is incomplete.
The road from Dammam to Salwa
Trucks leave Dammam heading south towards Al-Ahsa, then continue from Hofuf to Salwa on a desert highway lined with salt flats and low dunes. Hofuf to Doha alone is about 300 km, so Al-Ahsa customers are slightly closer than those in Dammam. Loads from Jubail, Ras Tanura and Qatif add the distance to Dammam; we usually consolidate them in Dammam, or collect directly when the shipment fills a truck.

From Salwa to Abu Samra and on to Doha
At Salwa the Saudi exit formalities are completed, based on the data we filed in advance on the Fasah platform. After crossing the border strip the truck enters Qatar’s Abu Samra post, where the customs declaration goes through the Al Nadeeb system and the cargo is inspected if required. Neither post shuts at night or at weekends, which allows night crossings when traffic is lighter. From Abu Samra it is only about 90 km to Doha, under an hour and a half in normal conditions.
A Dammam shipment, hour by hour
Here is a typical timeline for an apartment’s furniture on a dedicated truck, with the documents ready:
Note: shared freight usually adds about a day while the truck fills up, and any missing paperwork delays clearance at Abu Samra.
Approximate shipping prices from Dammam to Qatar
Note: a truck from Dammam usually reaches Doha within one to 3 days depending on its type and how quickly both border posts clear it, while air shipments arrive door to door within a day or two.
The lower figure in each row is where Gulf International Shipping’s Dammam price starts; the higher one is what larger shipments reach, or those that need wooden crates or delivery to outlying areas far from Doha. These prices sit 5% to 10% below the lowest figures published by carriers operating from Dammam to Qatar.
Detailed item prices from Dammam
Dammam carriers do not publish prices for some items in this table, such as per-kg freight, suitcases, majlis sets and villas, so we used Riyadh prices there, as Riyadh is the nearest city with published rates. Our rule is that an item from Dammam never costs more than the same item from Riyadh, because the Eastern Province route is shorter. Our shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Qatar page sets Dammam, Riyadh and Jeddah side by side.
Collection across the Eastern Province: Khobar, Qatif, Jubail and Al-Ahsa
Dammam is not our only pickup point. Gulf International Shipping covers the whole Eastern Province, and the approach varies a little by city:
- Dammam: our main consolidation hub, where shared and dedicated trucks to Qatar depart
- Al Khobar and Dhahran: many shipments are expatriate families relocating to Doha for work, often from villas and residential compounds
- Qatif, Saihat and Safwa: collected from the home, or consolidated in Dammam when the load is small
- Jubail and Ras Tanura: industrial and commercial cargo alongside furniture, with a full truck arranged when needed
- Abqaiq: on the road towards Al-Ahsa, so its loads join southbound trips easily
- Al-Ahsa (Hofuf and Mubarraz): the closest point to Salwa, shipping dates and farm produce as well as furniture
If your shipment is small and you live far from Dammam, we schedule the collection with the nearest trip passing your area instead of sending it alone, which brings the cost down without much delay.
Moving furniture from Dammam, Khobar and Dhahran to Qatar
Most people moving their furniture from the Eastern Province to Qatar are employees transferred to Doha or families settling there. This kind of move needs more planning than simple loading and unloading: Qatari customs handle used furniture under specific conditions, and some pieces, such as imported bedroom sets and kitchens, need careful dismantling and reassembly exactly as they were.
The Gulf International Shipping team starts with a home survey, or with a list and photos you send on WhatsApp. We then estimate the volume in cubic metres and suggest a truck: a small apartment fits a part load, a full house needs a private dyna, and a large villa may need a bigger truck or two trips. On moving day we dismantle beds and wardrobes, wrap wood in blankets and heavy-duty film, put glass and large screens in wooden crates, and number every carton on an inventory the customer receives a copy of.

Is used furniture exempt from Qatari customs?
A non-Qatari who comes to Qatar to take up a job for the first time is allowed to import used furniture and household appliances free of duty, under rules set by the General Authority of Customs. First, the goods have to land before half a year has passed since the owner’s arrival. They also need an employer letter stating the job and nationality, the residence permit and ID copy, and a list of the personal and household items. Items must be used and suited to personal use, not trade, and the owner undertakes not to dispose of them for one year from entry.
Where the exemption stops
Anything new, from a washing machine to a toolbox, pays duty, and so does a private car, which is handled on its own terms. Miss the six-month window or arrive with gaps in your paperwork and customs can levy 5% on what the goods are worth. We therefore recommend shipping your furniture as soon as your Qatari residence permit is issued.
Qatari citizens returning home may also bring their personal effects and used furniture duty-free, provided they satisfy the legal conditions. We wrote a whole page on Qatar used household goods customs for anyone relying on this rule; you can also see every stage of our furniture moving abroad service.
Car shipping from Dammam to Qatar: rules and costs
The short road makes shipping a car from Dammam practical even for people who might consider driving it themselves: the car arrives without extra kilometres or wear, and it is registered in Qatar on proper export papers. With Gulf International Shipping, moving a sedan from Dammam to Qatar on an open carrier costs from SAR 1,100, an SUV on a group carrier from SAR 1,390, and a luxury car on a private hydraulic flatbed from SAR 1,850.
Before booking, make sure Qatar will accept your car. A light vehicle that is more than five model years old is normally turned away, the best-known exception being a classic that has passed 35. Right-hand-drive conversions are refused too, as is any car with a flood or chassis-damage past. Expect duty of 5% of the vehicle’s value with nothing added for VAT, and you then have two weeks (14 days) to put it on Qatari plates.
On the Saudi side, a permanent export means a traffic export certificate and export plates in place of the normal ones, an inspection that has not lapsed, a record clear of unpaid fines, and a letter from the lender for any car still under finance. We follow these steps with you and photograph the car from every angle before loading. Our dedicated guide, car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Qatar, lays out every rule and city price.
Shipping cartons, parcels and personal items from the Eastern Province to Qatar
An Eastern Province shipment to Qatar is often far smaller than a house. Plenty of what we collect in Dammam and Khobar is cartons of clothes, books and kitchenware, gifts for relatives in Doha, or the belongings of a student or employee going ahead of the family. These travel on the shared truck and are priced per carton or per kilogram.
- Carton up to 50 kg: from SAR 138
- Suitcase: from SAR 138
- Per kilogram: from SAR 7.5 per kg for personal items and small goods
- Express parcels: from SAR 41 per kg
- Single large item: such as a fridge or sofa, from SAR 415
Qatar normally lets a personal parcel through without duty as long as its value stays within QAR 1,000. Boxes packed with stock in trade quantities are a different matter and are cleared as commercial cargo. Our page on cartons and parcels shipping to Qatar goes further.
Commercial freight from Dammam and Jubail to Qatar
Factories in Jubail and warehouses in Dammam send a steady stream of building materials, industrial products, retail stock and restaurant supplies to Qatar. Gulf International Shipping moves this cargo in two ways: a shared part load (LTL) for a few pallets or a small shop consignment, and a full truckload (FTL) on a dyna or trailer when you fill a truck. Shop goods between 50 and 100 kg start from SAR 830, and goods by volume from SAR 415 per cubic metre.
The biggest saving on duty comes from a GCC certificate of origin. Goods made in the Kingdom with a certificate of origin are usually treated as national goods within the GCC customs union, while Qatar charges 5% on goods of non-GCC origin. If the goods are foreign and duty was already paid in Saudi Arabia, the GCC clearing mechanism prevents paying twice, provided the correct documents are presented.
Al-Ahsa dates, food and medicines need a refrigerated truck and health certificates; we price them by quantity and required temperature, so send the details on WhatsApp for a quote. Our page on goods shipping from Saudi Arabia to Qatar covers B2B loads in depth.
Air freight from Dammam to Doha
The flight from King Fahd International Airport to Hamad International Airport takes only about 55 minutes, and once collection and clearance are added, an air shipment needs a day or two to reach the door. Gulf International Shipping prices air cargo from Dammam from SAR 1,110 for each cubic metre of furniture or personal goods.
To be frank, air freight from Dammam is rarely necessary, because the truck itself may arrive within a day or two. We recommend it in specific cases: documents or personal items the owner needs on arrival, urgent spare parts for a factory or workshop, or sensitive electronics the owner prefers not to send by road. For furniture and large numbers of cartons, road freight is far cheaper. Our dedicated air freight from Saudi Arabia to Qatar guide covers each Saudi departure airport.
Is there sea freight from Dammam Port to Hamad Port?
Yes, on request: commercial containers can sail out of Dammam’s King Abdulaziz Port and berth at Hamad Port south of Doha, taking roughly 5 to 10 days depending on the shipping line’s schedule and clearance. It suits companies shipping full containers of heavy goods, not household furniture or single cars; the road is much faster and avoids moving the cargo to and from the port. Sea freight is quoted by container type and size.
Documents required for shipping from Dammam to Qatar
Export data is filed on Fasah while the cargo is still in Dammam, so the truck stops at Salwa only to complete the exit, and the Qatari clearing agent is registered on Al Nadeeb before arrival at Abu Samra. Our customs clearance service starts from SAR 138.
What is prohibited from entering Qatar?
These are the categories Qatari customs turn back most often; if you are unsure about a piece, ask us before it is packed:
- Guns of any type and their rounds, explosives, and any drug
- Liquor, and anything containing pork
- Vapes of every kind, including electronic shisha and heat-not-burn kits
- Suwaika, snuff and other tobacco that is chewed or sniffed
- Second-hand car tyres
- Ivory or anything taken from a threatened species
- Indecent or religiously offensive material, and fake money or fake brands
- Radar detectors or jammers, and unlicensed listening equipment
Items that need permission first
Your own medicine should travel with the doctor’s prescription, cats and dogs need an import licence, dates and other food need a health certificate, and anyone carrying cash or valuables worth QAR 50,000 and above has to declare them.
Delivery across Qatar: how long from Dammam?
After Abu Samra the truck reaches Doha first, and shipments are distributed from there to other cities. These times are approximate from loading in Dammam:

For residential towers in Doha and Lusail we usually ask you to book the service lift and a delivery slot with building management, as some only allow unloading at set hours. Villas are easier, and delivery there includes unwrapping, assembly and removal of packing waste.
What decides the final price of a Dammam–Qatar shipment?
Six things push the price up or down:
- Volume: cubic metres for furniture, or volumetric weight for parcels (length × width × height in cm ÷ 5000)
- Truck type: a shared truck costs less, while a dedicated one moves sooner on a date you fix
- Type of items: glass, marble and large screens need wooden crates
- Delivery area: Doha and Al Wakrah are usually within the base price; Al Shamal and Dukhan may cost more
- Floors and lifts: carrying from a high floor without a lift takes more time and labour
- Extra services: storage before shipping, insurance based on value, and clearance
Worked example
A family in Khobar moving a two-room apartment and a sedan to Al Wakrah: the apartment starts from SAR 1,100, the car on an open carrier from SAR 1,100, and clearance from SAR 138. The cost therefore starts from about SAR 2,338 before any Qatari charges, and both shipments arrive within 1 to 3 days.
Keeping an Eastern Province shipment to Qatar affordable
- Go shared when the date is flexible; on a small load it costs far less than hiring a whole dyna
- Declutter before shipping, because every cubic metre less lowers the price
- Prepare documents before booking, since a clearance delay at Abu Samra can add days of waiting
- Ship furniture within 6 months of entering Qatar to benefit from the used-goods exemption
- Book car and household together so one date and one clearance cover both
- Skip air freight for heavy items; the road from Dammam is short anyway
Mistakes that cost Eastern Province customers time and money
- Delaying the furniture until 6 months after entering Qatar, losing the exemption and paying duty
- Packing boxed new appliances with used furniture without expecting duty on them
- Loading a car past the five-year mark before checking whether Qatar will take it
- Leaving personal items inside the car, which is not allowed and delays clearance
- Not booking the tower lift in Doha or Lusail, leaving the truck waiting for hours
- Packing e-cigarettes or other banned items inside cartons
