Gulf International Shipping flies cargo from Saudi Arabia to Qatar out of Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Madinah and Tabuk airports into Hamad International Airport in Doha, with delivery usually within 24 to 48 hours of collection. With Gulf International Shipping express parcels start from SAR 41 per kg, documents from SAR 83, a household appliance by air from SAR 555 per piece, while furniture and household belongings flown to Doha start at SAR 1,110 per cubic metre.
Qatar is a close neighbour, and a truck from Dammam gets there in a day or two. So the real question is not “how do I send it by air?” but “do I need air freight at all?”. This page explains when flying is worth the money and when the road is the smarter choice, then covers the airports, flight times, prices, how chargeable weight is worked out, and what airlines and Qatari customs will not accept.
In short
- Arrival airport: Hamad International Airport in Doha, with onward delivery to any address in Qatar
- Flight time: about 55 minutes from Dammam, about an hour and a half from Riyadh and about two and a half hours from Jeddah

Do you actually need air freight to Qatar?
By international standards, road freight to Qatar is quick: the distance is short, there is a single border crossing and it never closes. From Dammam and Al-Ahsa a truck can arrive in one to three days, and from Riyadh in two to four. In those cases flying saves a day or two at most, at a much higher price. From Jeddah, Makkah, Madinah and Tabuk the road takes longer, and that is where air becomes worth considering for light, urgent shipments.
The rule we work by: the further your city is from the Salwa border, the lighter the shipment and the more urgent it is, the more sense air makes. The heavier and bulkier it gets, the more the numbers favour the truck. That is why we never fly bedrooms, majlis sets or cars to Qatar; they go by truck, and air is kept for things measured in kilograms rather than cubic metres. Which Saudi airport will your shipment fly from?
We collect from your home or office, take the shipment to the nearest airport with flights to Doha, and load it on the first available departure. Approximate flight times from the main airports:
Note: the flight is a small part of the total; door to door usually takes 24 to 48 hours.
From Taif and Makkah we take shipments to Jeddah airport, and from Qassim, Hail and the central region usually to Riyadh. In most cases Riyadh is the fastest option because it has so many daily flights to Doha, even when your city is closer to another airport with fewer departures.

Approximate air freight prices from Saudi Arabia to Qatar
Gulf International Shipping prices air freight by the kilogram for parcels, by the piece for appliances and by the cubic metre for furniture and larger belongings:
Note: air freight to Qatar usually takes 24 to 48 hours door to door, depending on the collection city, flight times and clearance.
To see the gap clearly, here are road prices for the same items: parcels from SAR 7.5 per kg, an appliance from SAR 230, and furniture from SAR 555 per cubic metre in the western region or SAR 415 per cubic metre in Riyadh. In other words, air costs roughly double the road rate for furniture and appliances, and more than five times as much for parcels by the kilo. The full road price list is in shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Qatar.
How is the weight of an air shipment calculated?
An aircraft fills up by volume before it fills up by weight, so air freight is not charged on actual weight alone. A volumetric weight is also worked out from the box dimensions, and the higher of the two figures is used. For express parcels, multiply the carton’s three dimensions in centimetres and divide the result, usually by 5,000, to get the volumetric weight.
Worked example
A carton of clothes measures 60 × 50 × 50 cm and actually weighs 12 kg. Its volumetric weight is 60 × 50 × 50 ÷ 5,000 = 30 kg, so it is charged at 30 kg, not 12. At a starting rate of SAR 41 per kg, that means from SAR 1,230 by air, while the same carton by road starts from SAR 120. This one example is why we steer people towards road freight for boxes of clothes.
It follows that light, bulky items such as pillows, toys and puffy clothing are the worst things to fly, while small, heavy items such as spare parts, documents and electronics are the best. If you must fly clothing, compress it in vacuum bags and choose the smallest carton that fits.
What is air freight to Qatar good for?
Documents and contracts
Appointment papers, attested certificates and original contracts needed by a set date.
Spare parts and samples
A part holding up a production line or project in Doha, or product samples for a client.
Electronics
A work laptop and small devices, with batteries installed inside rather than loose.
First-week essentials
A suitcase of clothes and basics for an employee before the furniture arrives by road.
On the other hand, some shipments we do not fly because the road suits them better: bedrooms, majlis seating and whole households; large appliances when there is no rush; cars, which travel on car carriers through Salwa; and commercial goods by the tonne. What can’t you send by air to Qatar?
An air shipment passes two checks: aviation security screening at the departure airport, then Qatari customs at Hamad International. Aviation rules are stricter than road rules, so some things a truck carries without a second thought will be refused on a plane.
Items restricted by airlines
- Loose lithium batteries and power banks, except under special conditions.
- Perfumes, oud oil, rose oil and medical alcohol, which are flammable liquids.
- Aerosols, air fresheners, insect sprays and gas canisters.
- Paints, solvents, strong glues, car batteries and matches.
Items banned by Qatari customs
Weapons and ammunition; narcotics including khat; alcohol; pork products; e-cigarettes, electronic shisha and heated tobacco; sweeka and snuff; used tyres; ivory; counterfeit goods and currency; material offensive to religion or morals; and unlicensed jamming or surveillance devices. Personal medicines need a prescription, and cash or valuables of QR 50,000 or more must be declared. These are the main items; we review every shipment with you before booking.
How should you pack an air shipment to Qatar?
An air shipment is lifted and set down several times: from the collection van to the warehouse, onto the aircraft pallet, into the arrivals hall and onto the delivery truck. Good packing protects it and keeps its volumetric weight down at the same time.
- Use a new double-wall carton; a reused one loses its strength.
- Fill gaps with paper or bubble wrap so the contents cannot shift, without bulking the box out.
- Bubble-wrap electronics and place them in the middle of the carton, away from the sides.
- Run wide tape across every seam, H-style, on both the top and the bottom.
- Write the recipient’s name, Qatari mobile number and address on the carton and on a sheet inside it.
Documents needed for air freight to Qatar
Every shipment gets an air waybill with a number you can use to track it, and we send its data to the Qatari side before landing. The customs broker is registered on Qatar’s Al Nadeeb system, which usually needs a Qatari mobile number linked to the recipient’s QID.
Clearance and collection at Hamad International Airport
After landing, the shipment goes to the cargo terminal at Hamad International Airport, where it is inspected and cleared before leaving on a delivery truck for addresses across Qatar, Doha, Lusail and Al Rayyan included. Duty is not normally charged on a personal parcel valued at QR 1,000 or less, nor on a single gift up to QR 3,000. Beyond that, goods of non-GCC origin usually attract 5% customs duty, and Qatar has no VAT at present.
If you are arriving to work for the first time, your personal effects and used belongings fall under the same exemption as furniture, provided they arrive within 6 months of your entry with your employer’s letter, residence permit and a list of items. Details in Qatar customs rules for used household goods.

Combine air and road in one move
The arrangement we recommend most to families and employees relocating to Qatar is a split shipment: a suitcase or two cartons by air carrying what is needed for the first few days, and the rest of the home by truck. That way the family is not left waiting without essentials, and you do not pay air rates on things that are not urgent.
Split-shipment example
An employee in Riyadh is moving to Lusail. He flies a small carton with a chargeable weight of 8 kg holding his papers and laptop, from SAR 328, arriving within two days. His bedroom and cartons go by road on a shared truck, arriving in 2 to 4 days, with a complete bedroom starting from SAR 1,660 by road.
The cheapest way to send air freight to Qatar
- Send less: pick what you truly need in the first week and send the rest by road.
- Use a smaller box: every extra centimetre raises the volumetric weight.
- Combine parcels: one parcel costs less than three small ones to the same person.
- Pick the best-connected airport: Riyadh and Dammam usually link fastest to Doha.
- Ask about road from the east: from Dammam a truck may arrive in a day for far less.
Common mistakes with air freight to Qatar
- Flying large cartons of clothes and paying for volumetric weight several times the real weight.
- Packing perfumes, oud oil or aerosols in an air carton, so the shipment is rejected at screening.
- Sending power banks or loose batteries without declaring them.
- Not giving the recipient’s Qatari mobile number, which delays clearance at Hamad.
- Writing “personal items” without listing the contents and their value.
- Flying a whole household from the Eastern Province when a truck would arrive in a day or two.
