Shipping from Jeddah to Qatar

Gulf International Shipping moves cargo by road from Jeddah to Qatar through the Salwa border post and Qatar’s Abu Samra crossing, the only land link between the two countries. A shipment collected anywhere in Jeddah usually reaches Doha, Al Wakrah or Al Khor in 3 to 5 working days door to door, or in 24 to 48 hours by air through Hamad International Airport. Our rates start at SAR 120 for a carton, SAR 740 for a consolidated load of personal belongings, SAR 2,030 for bedrooms on a shared truck, SAR 2,030 for a sedan on an open car carrier and SAR 2,300 for a full truck.

The Red Sea coast and the Arabian Gulf coast sit at opposite ends of the Kingdom, and that distance shapes everything about this route. Customers in Jeddah tend to ask the same three things first: which way does the truck go, how many days does it take, and why does Jeddah cost more than Riyadh or Dammam? This guide answers those questions in detail, then sets out prices, paperwork, car rules and the Qatari customs points that matter for anyone shipping from Jeddah in particular.

In short

  • Distance: about 1,550 km from Jeddah to Doha via Riyadh and Hofuf, depending on the route and the consolidation point
  • Border crossing: Salwa (Al-Udaid governorate) facing Qatar’s Abu Samra post; both run round the clock all week
  • Road freight: 3 to 5 working days door to door, slightly faster with a dedicated truck
  • Air freight: the Jeddah to Doha flight takes about two and a half hours; delivery within 24 to 48 hours
  • Prices: cartons from SAR 120, SAR 7.5 per kg, bedrooms from SAR 2,030, sedans from SAR 2,030
  • Taxes in Qatar: Qatar charges no VAT; goods made outside the GCC usually pay 5% customs duty
  • Delivery: Doha, Lusail, Al Rayyan, Al Wakrah, Al Khor, Mesaieed, Al Shamal, Dukhan and the rest of Qatar

How far is Qatar from Jeddah, and which road does the truck take?

There is no short cut across the desert from Jeddah to Qatar. Trucks cross the Kingdom from west to east on the highway to Riyadh, turn south-east towards Khurais, carry on to Hofuf in Al-Ahsa and then drop down to Salwa on the border. Along that line the distance from Jeddah to Doha is roughly 1,550 km, give or take a little depending on where in Jeddah we collect and where in Qatar we deliver.

You will see websites quoting 1,400 km for this trip, and that figure does not hold up. The straight-line distance between Jeddah and Doha airports alone is close to 1,332 km, and a road is always longer than a straight line. We point this out because the real distance decides how many days the driver needs and how much fuel the trip burns; plan around a smaller number and you will be expecting a delivery date that cannot happen.

Why Jeddah shipments pass through Riyadh

Riyadh is the hub where the western road network meets the eastern one, and it is full of consolidation warehouses. If your shipment is small, a few cartons or a single room, it may travel the first leg from Jeddah alongside other customers’ goods and then be transferred in Riyadh onto the truck heading for Salwa. A large shipment that fills a whole truck goes straight from your door or warehouse in Jeddah to Doha without being unloaded on the way, which saves roughly a day and means your things are handled less.

Salwa and Abu Samra: the only way into Qatar by land

The Salwa border post lies in Al-Udaid governorate in the Eastern Province. It is the only land crossing between Saudi Arabia and Qatar and it operates around the clock, seven days a week. Opposite it on the Qatari side is Abu Samra, about 90 km from Doha. Do not confuse it with Al-Batha: that is the crossing into the UAE, and no Qatar-bound truck goes anywhere near it.

Your shipment’s journey from Jeddah to Doha, day by day

This is the schedule Gulf International Shipping normally works to for a furniture or goods consignment out of Jeddah. The days are approximate and shift with the size of the load, the state of the paperwork and how busy the border is, but they give you a realistic picture of where your belongings are on each day.

DayWhat happensWhere the shipment is
Day 1Survey, dismantling, packing and loading; the inventory is written up and photographed, and export data is filed on the Fasah platformJeddah
Day 2Highway drive from Jeddah to Riyadh, with consolidation in Riyadh for shared loadsOn the road to Riyadh
Day 3Riyadh → Khurais → Hofuf → Salwa, arriving at the border with the data already filedEastern Province
Day 4Exit formalities at Salwa, then entry and clearance at Abu Samra through Qatar’s Al Nadeeb systemThe border
Day 5Delivery to the home or warehouse and reassembly of the furnitureDoha and the rest of Qatar

Note: a dedicated truck can take a day off this schedule, while a shared load may wait an extra day in Jeddah for the truck to fill.

What usually slows a shipment down is not the road but a halt at the border, caused by a missing document or a mismatch between the inventory and what is actually on the truck. That is why we file the data electronically about a day before the truck reaches Salwa, and why we ask for your Qatari employer’s letter and residence permit copy before loading rather than after.

Approximate prices for shipping from Jeddah to Qatar

Shipping from Jeddah to Qatar with Gulf International Shipping begins at SAR 7.5 a kilo or SAR 120 a carton, rising to SAR 11,500 for a complete villa on a 13.6 m trailer. The table lists the items Jeddah customers ask about most:

Consolidated personal belongingsShared loadFrom SAR 740

Full truckload (FTL)Dyna or trailer for a ready loadFrom SAR 2,300

Note: by road, Jeddah shipments typically need 3 to 5 working days, varying with the Qatari city and customs release; by air, 24 to 48 hours.

Items priced per piece, per cubic metre or per tonne

  • Furniture by volume (road): from SAR 555 per cubic metre, useful when you do not have a full room
  • Household appliance (road): from SAR 230 per piece, such as a fridge or washing machine
  • Commercial goods (road): from SAR 370 per tonne
  • Suitcase: from SAR 138; a 20 kg parcel from SAR 148
  • Express parcels: from SAR 41 per kg
  • Customs clearance: from SAR 138 depending on the shipment

You may notice that a full truck starts from SAR 2,300 while a whole apartment starts from SAR 6,000. The truck price covers hauling a load that is already packed and loaded by its owner, palletised stock for example. The apartment price includes the crew that dismantles and packs with full materials, the loading and the reassembly in Qatar. If your goods are packed and ready, ask for the truck rate; if you want the full service, ask for the apartment rate.

Jeddah costs more than Riyadh for the same item because the truck covers roughly 950 km more before it even reaches the point where Riyadh shipments begin. So compare Jeddah quotes with other Jeddah quotes, not with figures advertised for the Eastern Province. For other cities, see shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Qatar.

Which Jeddah districts do we collect from?

We collect from every district of Jeddah and the nearby governorates, choosing the vehicle and crew size to suit the location. North Jeddah, in areas such as Obhur Al Shamaliyah, Al Shati, Al Mohammadiyah, Al Naeem, Al Zahra and Al Rawdah, is full of villas and residential towers, where the lift has to be booked with building management in advance. In the central districts, including Al Hamra, Al Faisaliyah, Al Salamah, Al Safa and Al Marwah, streets are narrower and we may use a small dyna to shuttle items to the main truck. South and east Jeddah, in Al Hamdaniyah, Al Samer, Al Ajwad, Al Rehab and Al Sanabel, has many older houses and walk-up flats, so we add hands for carrying down the stairs.

Commercial cargo is collected from warehouses in the industrial area, Al Khumrah and along the old Makkah road, as well as from factories and online stores. Outside the city we reach Rabigh, Khulais and Al Kamil, timing the pickup so the goods make the next departing truck.

Book the lift with your building management, tell us if the street is narrow or jammed at midday, and put anything you are keeping in a separate room so it does not get packed with the shipment by mistake.

Car shipping from Jeddah to Qatar: open or enclosed carrier?

Gulf International Shipping moves cars from Jeddah to Qatar by road on two kinds of carrier. An open car carrier holds the vehicle strapped down by its wheels and suits everyday cars. An enclosed hydraulic carrier keeps out dust, sun and stones thrown up from the road, and suits luxury, sports and electric cars. Because the Jeddah run is long and crosses hot desert highways, many owners of valuable cars choose enclosed transport.

Car typeOpen carrierEnclosed hydraulic carrier
SedanFrom SAR 2,030From SAR 3,880
SUVFrom SAR 2,590From SAR 4,600
Sports or electricFrom SAR 3,230From SAR 5,540

Note: a car usually takes 3 to 5 working days from Jeddah to Doha once the export papers are complete.

Export paperwork on the Saudi side

A car moving to Qatar for good needs a final export from the Kingdom: an export certificate from the traffic department, the Saudi plates swapped for export plates, an up-to-date periodic inspection (MVPI), proof that no traffic fines are outstanding, a copy of the owner’s ID or iqama, the registration card and an electronic authorisation for the carrier. A bank-financed car needs the bank’s consent before any of this starts. A car going to Qatar for a temporary visit and coming back follows a different route, based on a valid registration and a triptyque (temporary import document).

Rules for bringing a car into Qatar

As a rule, Qatar only admits light vehicles up to 5 years old, counted from the model year; the exceptions are few, classic cars older than 35 years being the best known. Right-hand-drive cars converted to left-hand drive will be refused, and so will any vehicle with a history of flood, fire, a serious crash or frame damage. Customs duty is 5% of the car’s value, there is no VAT, and a personal car is not covered by the used household goods exemption. Once in Qatar the car must be registered within 14 days, after a technical inspection and registration with the traffic department. Every rule is covered in car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Qatar.

Check the model year before you book

The request we most often have to turn down in Jeddah is a car more than five years old that its owner wants to move to Qatar permanently. Check the year of manufacture on the registration card before starting the export process and removing the plates, because backing out afterwards costs time and repeat visits.

Moving furniture and household goods from Jeddah to Qatar

Furniture from Jeddah leaves a humid seaside city, crosses a hot dry desert, then arrives in humid Doha. Those swings in heat and moisture make the packing method more important than the type of truck. We wrap wood first in a soft layer that prevents scratches, then in a padded moving blanket, and only then in plastic on the outside. Mattresses and fabric sofas are never sealed tight while damp, so they do not trap moisture for the whole journey.

Beds and wardrobes are dismantled, with each set of screws bagged and tied to its piece and the parts numbered. Large TVs, mirrors and glass go into wooden crates. Fridges and washing machines are emptied the day before loading and dried, so they do not smell when opened in Qatar. In Doha the crew reassembles the furniture and reconnects anything that needs a simple hook-up. For whole-home moves, see furniture moving from Saudi Arabia to Qatar.

Do you pay customs on used furniture in Qatar?

Qatar’s General Authority of Customs waives duty on the used furniture and personal effects of non-Qataris who come to Qatar to work for the first time, as long as the goods land within 6 months of the person’s entry. You need a letter from the employer stating the job and nationality, a work residence permit with an ID copy, and an itemised list of belongings stamped by customs, and you undertake not to sell or dispose of the items for one year. New appliances and tools are not exempt, and neither are cars. Returning Qatari citizens may also bring personal effects and used furniture duty-free under the legal criteria. Read the details in Qatar customs rules for used household goods.

Shipping commercial goods from Jeddah to Qatar

Jeddah is a trading and import city, and many of our customers there are merchants forwarding goods to buyers in Doha. Gulf International Shipping carries commercial cargo by road from SAR 370 per tonne on a shared truck, and a full truck starts from SAR 2,300. A part load suits a business sending a few pallets a week; a full load suits anyone filling a dyna or trailer, and it arrives sooner because it does not wait for other customers’ goods.

Saudi-made goods normally cross as GCC national goods when accompanied by a GCC certificate of origin, so no customs duty is charged in Qatar. Goods imported from outside the Gulf through Jeddah Islamic Port, on which duty was already paid in Saudi Arabia, use the GCC clearing mechanism (the statistical statement) so that duty is not paid twice. Without these papers, 5% duty may be charged on non-GCC goods. Regular shippers should read goods shipping from Saudi Arabia to Qatar.

  • Foodstuffs and dates need health certificates and, depending on the product, a refrigerated truck.
  • Spare parts and electronics need a detailed invoice with quantities and values.
  • Building materials and heavy tools go on an open or closed trailer depending on how sensitive they are to dust.
  • Online-store orders are grouped weekly into a single consignment to lower the cost per order.

Air freight from Jeddah to Doha

If five days by road is too long, the shipment can fly instead: we put it on a flight from Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport to Hamad International Airport in Doha. The flight itself takes about two and a half hours, and, counting pickup and clearance at both ends, the goods are normally at your door 24 to 48 hours after collection. Gulf International Shipping’s air rate from Jeddah begins at SAR 1,110 per cubic metre of furniture and belongings, and from SAR 555 per household appliance.

Air is expensive next to road, so it suits documents, samples, permitted medicines, electronics and urgent spare parts, or a bag of essentials an employee needs during the first week in Doha before the rest of the furniture arrives by truck. Full households and cars are far better off on the road. See the full comparison in air freight from Saudi Arabia to Qatar.

Shipping cartons and parcels from Jeddah to Qatar

Not everyone shipping to Qatar is moving a whole house. Plenty of Jeddah customers send cartons of clothes, books and gifts to relatives, or follow up with things they forgot when they moved. We add these small consignments to the shared truck: rates begin at SAR 120 for a carton weighing up to 30 kg, SAR 138 for a suitcase and SAR 148 for a 20 kg parcel, or SAR 7.5 per kilo.

Mark each carton with the recipient’s name, Qatari mobile number and delivery city, and attach a list of contents. Personal parcels worth up to QR 1,000 are generally exempt from duty in Qatar; anything worth more may attract duty. More on this in cartons and parcels shipping to Qatar.

Delivery across Qatar from Jeddah

After Abu Samra the truck heads north to Doha, and from there we distribute to the other towns. The table shows the approximate total time from Jeddah to Qatar’s main cities:

Documents needed to ship from Jeddah to Qatar

Shipment typeDocuments required
Furniture and personal effectsIqama or ID and passport copy, a detailed inventory, the Qatari employer’s letter and work residence permit if you want the exemption, and a Qatari mobile number registered to the recipient
CarRegistration card, export certificate and export plates, periodic inspection, violations clearance, ID, and bank consent for a financed car
Commercial goodsCommercial registration, commercial invoice, packing list, GCC certificate of origin, and health certificates for food
Cartons and parcelsID copy, recipient’s name and mobile number, and a list of contents with values

On the Qatari side the customs broker is registered online through the Al Nadeeb system before the truck arrives, and for that the recipient normally needs a Qatari mobile line registered against their QID. If you do not have a Qatari number yet, tell us early so we can arrange an alternative through your employer or an authorised person.

What can’t you ship from Jeddah to Qatar?

The main items banned by Qatari customs are weapons, ammunition and explosives; narcotics of any kind, including khat and poppy seeds; alcohol; pork products; e-cigarettes, electronic shisha and heated-tobacco devices; chewing tobacco such as sweeka; used tyres; ivory and products from endangered species; material offensive to religion or public morals; counterfeit currency and goods; and unlicensed jamming or surveillance devices.

Some items are restricted and need a permit or a declaration: prescribed personal medicines, pets (import licence required), declared cash or valuables of QR 50,000 and above, and foodstuffs and dates with health certificates. This is a list of the main items only; we confirm each case with you before loading.

How is the cost of shipping from Jeddah to Qatar worked out?

The final price comes from four things: the volume or weight, the type of service (shared or dedicated), extras such as dismantling, packing, reassembly and clearance, and where in Qatar the goods are delivered. Some jobs also carry a difficulty factor at pickup, such as a high floor with no lift or a street the truck cannot enter.

Worked example

An employee in Al Naeem, Jeddah, is moving to Al Rayyan with one bedroom, some cartons and two appliances. The bedroom on a shared truck starts from SAR 2,030, the two appliances from SAR 230 each (SAR 460), and five cartons from SAR 120 each (SAR 600). The total starts from about SAR 3,090, plus clearance from SAR 138 if requested.

The cheapest way to ship from Jeddah to Qatar

  • Share a truck: join a truck already heading to Qatar instead of booking a whole one for a few items.
  • Ship less: selling bulky cheap furniture in Jeddah can cost less than hauling it 1,550 km.
  • Get your papers ready early: a stop at the border over a missing document means extra days.
  • Choose road, not air: furniture and appliances cost far less by road; keep air for light urgent items.
  • Avoid the peak: the end of the school year and long holidays are the busiest times.

Common mistakes when shipping from Jeddah to Qatar

  • Believing the two-day delivery some sites advertise; the road from Jeddah is longer than that.
  • Sending furniture more than six months after you entered Qatar, which loses the exemption.
  • Packing boxed new appliances with used furniture and listing them as used.
  • Removing the plates from a car Qatar will not accept because of its age.
  • Leaving personal belongings inside a car while it is transported.
  • Writing a vague inventory such as “household items” with no breakdown.
