Cartons and parcels shipping to Oman

Gulf International Shipping offers cartons and parcels shipping to Oman from any Saudi city: we collect your carton, suitcase or store order from your door, consolidate it with other shipments in a closed truck that crosses at the Empty Quarter (Rub al Khali) border, and hand it to the recipient’s door in Muscat, Sohar, Nizwa or Salalah. A carton from Riyadh or the Eastern Province reaches Muscat in 3–5 working days, from Jeddah, Makkah, Madinah or Taif in 5–7 days, Salalah takes about two days longer, and air parcels arrive in 48–72 hours. With Gulf International Shipping, a parcel of up to 5 kg costs from SAR 41 to Muscat and SAR 50 to Salalah, a small carton from SAR 46, a carton of up to 30 kg from SAR 138, and air freight from SAR 41 a kilo.

Most people who ask us about this service are not moving a house or shipping trade goods. They are an employee sending Eid clothes and boxes of dates to family in Muscat, a student who needs books and a laptop in Sohar, an online seller with an order from Nizwa, or a family that went ahead of its furniture to Salalah and needs two cartons of kitchen things. Each of them really has one question: how much does a carton cost and when will it arrive? So this page starts with price and transit time, then explains what changes the figure, then what can and cannot go in the box.

How much does it cost to ship a carton to Muscat and Salalah?

The first thing anyone comparing prices on this lane notices is that Salalah is not priced like Muscat. Trucks enter Oman on the Ibri side in the north-west, with Muscat roughly 400 km from the border, while Salalah lies at the far south in Dhofar Governorate, reached by a long road down through Adam, Haima and Thumrait with few large towns along the way. That is why market rates for a parcel to Salalah run about 20–35% above Muscat, and we show that openly in our prices instead of hiding it in extra charges at delivery.

Note: on the truck, a carton sent from Riyadh or the Eastern Province spends 3–5 working days getting to Muscat, one from Jeddah, Makkah, Madinah or Taif 5–7 days, and one from Tabuk about 6–8; Salalah adds roughly two, and a flown parcel takes 48–72 hours.

The first figure in each cell is the Gulf International Shipping starting price, set below the lowest rates carriers publish on the Oman lane. The second is what the same item usually reaches as the size or weight grows. Per piece, per kilo or by volume: how is your carton priced?

Small cartons and parcels up to 5 kg are usually priced per piece, because the difference between 2 kg and 4 kg changes nothing on the truck. Once a carton gets bigger, two things matter: its actual weight and the space it takes. Space is what surprises people. A carton of blankets or children’s toys may weigh only 8 kg but take the room of a 30 kg carton of books. In road groupage we charge on whichever is greater, weight or volume; in air freight, volumetric weight is length × width × height in centimetres divided by a fixed figure set by the airlines, so a big light carton costs more by air than its owner expects.

  • One to three cartons: per-piece pricing is the clearest and usually the cheapest.
  • Four to ten cartons: ask for a part-load price on the whole lot, from SAR 230 from Riyadh, which often beats adding up the pieces.
  • Above roughly 100 kg: groupage by the kilo becomes cheaper, from SAR 5.5 per kg to Muscat.
  • Beyond that: once you reach a room or more, you need furniture moving from Saudi Arabia to Oman, not carton shipping.

Save by cutting air, not cartons

Fill each carton to the top with soft items such as clothes and towels, and leave no gap under the lid. A full carton does not crush under the others; a half-empty one is charged for its full volume and then collapses on the road.

Your carton’s journey from your door to the recipient’s door in Oman

No truck leaves for Oman for a single carton; it joins a consolidated trip. Knowing the stages of that trip explains why cartons take days rather than hours, and why arrival time varies from one week to the next:

  1. 1
    Collection from your door
Our courier calls at your address in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam or elsewhere, or you drop the carton at the hub, where it is weighed, photographed and given a tracking number.
  2. 2
    Sorting at the hub
Cartons are sorted by Omani governorate: Muscat and Al Batinah together, Ad Dakhiliyah and Al Dhahirah together, Dhofar on its own.
  3. 3
    Loading and export
The groupage truck is loaded, we file the export declaration on Fasah and book the arrival slot at the border.
  4. 4
    The Empty Quarter road
The truck covers 564 km on the Saudi side to the Empty Quarter crossing, then enters Oman.
  5. 5
    Clearance on Bayan
Shipment details are filed on the Omani Bayan system, and some cartons may be opened for inspection.
  6. 6
    Delivery inside Oman
From Ibri, cartons fan out to Nizwa, Muscat and Sohar, or south to Salalah, and the courier calls the recipient before arriving.
Sorting Oman parcels at the consolidation hub
Cartons and parcels on a conveyor at the consolidation hub, sorted into bins by Omani governorate before loading

The two longest stages are waiting for the groupage load to fill and the time at the border. We control the first through regular consolidation from Riyadh, the Eastern Province and Jeddah; the second varies with truck traffic at the crossing and the Fasah slot. That is why we give you an estimated transit time at collection and send updates when the truck leaves and when it crosses the border.

What do people send to Oman in cartons?

Clothes, gifts and personal items

Most cartons we ship to Oman hold clothes, shoes and gifts for family and relatives, personal belongings of employees who moved to Muscat or Sohar ahead of their families, and books and study supplies for students. All of these travel by road at per-piece rates, and you can include more than one recipient in the same city as long as each carton carries its own address.

Dates, coffee and packaged sweets

Saudi dates are a fixture in cartons to Oman, along with coffee, cardamom and packaged sweets. Ship them in their original sealed packs and avoid loose moist dates or homemade sweets that spoil quickly: the trip takes days, and a truck box on a hot desert road gets very warm. If the quantity is commercial, it belongs in goods shipping from Saudi Arabia to Oman, with certificates of origin and refrigerated trucks.

Perfume, oud and incense

This category needs special care. Perfumes containing alcohol are usually classed as flammable in air freight, so airlines refuse them or accept them only under special conditions, which is why we send them by road. Oud and bakhoor travel by road in sealed tins so their scent does not spread to neighbouring cartons. Small bottles of oud oil should each be wrapped on their own and stood upright in the centre of the carton, away from its sides.

Online store orders

For a Saudi store selling to customers in Oman, we collect orders from the shop or warehouse and send them by road from SAR 41 for a parcel up to 5 kg to Muscat and from SAR 50 to Salalah. A store with regular orders benefits from a fixed collection schedule, and once orders run into dozens a week, moving stock into Oman becomes cheaper than individual parcels.

Packing a carton for a long desert road

A carton bound for Oman travels between 1,300 and 2,800 km depending on where it starts, and it is loaded and unloaded several times: at collection, at the hub, possibly when customs open it, and again at delivery. So the right packing differs from a carton sent across town:

  • A new double-wall carton: used grocery boxes weaken in heat and humidity and collapse under weight.
  • Heavy items in small cartons: books and tins in a small box, clothes and blankets in a large one, and no carton over 30 kg.
  • Tape in an H pattern: across the top and bottom seams and the edges, not a single strip down the middle.
  • A plastic bag inside: for clothes and books, to keep out the fine dust that gets through gaps on the desert road.
  • Away from heat: candles, chocolate and cosmetics can melt in a truck box, so ship them in winter or ask for a chilled option.
  • A contents list inside and outside: it speeds up customs checks and helps repack the carton if it is opened.

We can pack for you

If you have no suitable cartons, our courier brings new boxes and packing materials, packs your items in front of you and adds the cost to the invoice after telling you the amount.

Does a carton pay customs or VAT in Oman?

It depends on what is inside and what it is for. Used personal items in reasonable quantities, such as clothes, books and simple gifts, usually pass with little or no charge after inspection. New goods in commercial quantities are treated as goods by Oman Customs: no customs duty on Saudi-made products with a GCC certificate of origin, 5% duty on non-GCC items, then 5% VAT on the value plus duty. For online store orders, VAT is normally calculated on the order value.

You may hear of a duty-free allowance on personal goods up to a set value in Omani rials. That allowance applies to travellers carrying their belongings through a border or airport, not to a carton shipped on its own, so do not count on it when working out your cost. If your carton holds an expensive new device, keep its invoice and send it to us before shipping so we can add it to the declaration.

What can’t you put in cartons to Oman?

Some prohibited items never cross the mind of someone packing a carton for family, yet they stop the carton, and sometimes the whole groupage load, at inspection. The main ones on Oman Customs’ list:

  • Weapons of any kind, knives and daggers even if decorative, and toy guns and rifles that resemble real ones.
  • Clothing and gear resembling military uniforms, night-vision and rifle scopes, and stun devices.
  • Drones, e-cigarettes and wireless communication devices.
  • Counterfeit goods, narcotics and psychotropic substances, and medicines without a clear prescription.
  • Ivory and products of endangered species, alcoholic drinks and non-compliant publications.

Banned in air freight in particular, though usually allowed by road: alcohol-based perfumes, loose lithium batteries and power banks, lighters and pressurised sprays. Books and films with religious or political content may be reviewed by the media authority before release. If you are unsure about an item, photograph it and send it to us on WhatsApp before you seal the carton.

Delivery to Muscat, Salalah and the rest of Oman

We deliver cartons to the recipient’s door across Oman’s governorates, and the courier calls before arriving. Because trucks enter via Ibri, cartons for Al Dhahirah, Ad Dakhiliyah and Al Buraimi arrive slightly sooner than Muscat, while Dhofar and Al Wusta take about two extra days.

Delivering cartons in Salalah
A courier carries two cartons towards a white house among Salalah’s palm farms during the khareef season

In Salalah we treat the khareef season as a peak: families move there, visitors multiply and demand for delivery rises. If your carton is for an occasion in Salalah during that season, book at least a week early. Cartons sent from Jeddah or other western cities arrive about two days later than the table shows.

Write the Omani address in full

In Arabic paperwork write «سلطنة عمان», not «عمان» on its own, so your carton is not mixed up with shipments to Amman in Jordan. Then add the governorate, wilayat, area, building number or nearest well-known landmark, the recipient’s name as on their ID, and an Omani phone number starting with +968 that is actually answered. Most cartons delayed at delivery had an incomplete address or a recipient whose phone was off.

Air freight for urgent parcels to Oman

When a parcel cannot wait days, such as a passport, original documents, prescribed medicine or a device someone needs for work, we send it by air. Nonstop flights run from Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and Madinah airports to Muscat International Airport, and from Taif on nonstop flights according to the airline schedule; air parcels for Salalah go via Muscat or on a direct flight depending on availability. The plane covers the distance in about two and a quarter hours from Riyadh or three and a quarter from Jeddah, but your parcel needs 48–72 hours from your door to theirs, depending on flights and clearance.

An air parcel with Gulf International Shipping costs from SAR 41 a kilo, and we charge whichever is heavier, the real weight or the volumetric one. For comparison, a 5 kg parcel costs from about SAR 205 by air but from SAR 41 by road to Muscat. So we recommend air only for light, urgent items and road for anything that can wait. The cheapest way to ship cartons to Oman

Road groupage is always the cheapest, and three habits bring the cost down further: pack your things into fewer, fuller cartons instead of many half-empty ones, ask for a part-load price once you have more than three cartons, and leave behind cheap heavy items you can buy in Muscat for close to what they would cost to ship. If the recipient is in Salalah and the carton is not urgent, send it with the next groupage run heading south rather than on its own.

Common mistakes that delay cartons to Oman

  • An incomplete address, or «عمان» alone: the carton is held up at sorting or misrouted to Jordan.
  • An Omani phone that is switched off: the courier will not leave a carton without reaching the recipient.
  • Perfume or a power bank in an air parcel: the whole parcel is returned from the airport.
  • A carton with no contents list: it lengthens the customs check for the entire groupage load.
  • A toy that looks like a weapon or a decorative knife: it may be seized and hold up the cartons with it.
  • Weak packing on a heavy carton: a used box will not survive 2,000 km of road.
