Gulf International Shipping flies shipments from Saudi Arabia to the UAE out of Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam airports into Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, arriving within 24 to 48 hours of being handed to the airport cargo terminal. Air freight starts from SAR 46 per kg on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is greater; documents up to 1 kg start from SAR 138, a parcel up to 5 kg from SAR 185, and an express electronics shipment from SAR 1,500.
The aircraft is the shortest link between Saudi and Emirati cities, but it is not the cheapest and it does not suit every shipment. This guide explains when air freight to the UAE is the right call, how the price is worked out, what is not allowed on board, and when the road alternative makes more sense. In short: air freight from Saudi Arabia to the UAE
- Departure airports: Riyadh (King Khalid), Jeddah (King Abdulaziz), Dammam (King Fahd)
- Arrival airports: Dubai International, Al Maktoum at Dubai South, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah
- Transit: 24 to 48 hours from handing the shipment to the airport
- Price per kg: from SAR 46 per kg on actual or volumetric weight
- Documents and small parcels: documents up to 1 kg from SAR 138, parcels up to 5 kg from SAR 185
- Volumetric weight: length × width × height in cm ÷ 6000 for general air cargo
- Road alternative: cartons from SAR 92 from Riyadh, 3 to 5 days via Al Batha
When should you choose air freight to the UAE over road?
The rule we work by at Gulf International Shipping is simple: air for small, urgent shipments, road for everything else. Road freight from Dammam to Dubai takes 2 to 4 working days, from Riyadh 3 to 5 days and from the Western Region about 4 to 6 days, at a fraction of the air cost for the same quantity. So the premium for flying only pays off when time is the deciding factor.

How much does air freight from Saudi Arabia to the UAE cost?
Air freight is charged per kilo, and the weight you pay for is the greater of the actual weight on the scale and the volumetric weight calculated from the dimensions. The final cost varies with the departure airport, the type of contents, the speed required and space on the flights.
Approximate air freight prices from Saudi Arabia to the UAE
Note: air freight takes 24 to 48 hours from handover at the airport; road freight takes 2 to 6 days depending on the city, the emirate and customs clearance.
The upper end of the per-kg range applies to very urgent shipments or contents needing special handling; ordinary consignments sit close to the starting rate. These prices do not include any UAE customs duty that may apply to commercial goods, which is charged on the value and origin of the shipment.

How is volumetric weight calculated in air freight?
An aircraft runs out of space before it runs out of payload, so airlines charge by volume when a shipment is light but bulky. The standard formula for general air cargo is length × width × height in centimetres ÷ 6000, giving the volumetric weight in kilos. Some express courier services divide by 5000, which produces a higher volumetric weight.
Worked example
A carton measuring 50 × 40 × 40 cm weighs 8 kg on the scale. Its volumetric weight is 80,000 ÷ 6000 = about 13.3 kg, so it is charged at 13.3 kg, not 8. At the starting rate of SAR 46 per kg the cost starts from about SAR 612. Repack the same contents into a 40 × 30 × 30 cm carton and the volumetric weight falls to 6 kg, so it is charged on the actual 8 kg and the cost starts from SAR 368.
That is why we look at the packing before we quote: a carton only slightly bigger than its contents can double the bill. It is also why we advise against flying furniture, cushions or large toys; they are light but take up a great deal of space.
Airports: where we fly from and where your shipment lands

In the UAE, shipments usually land at Dubai International, at Al Maktoum International in Dubai South, an important cargo airport, at Abu Dhabi or at Sharjah. We pick the arrival airport closest to the recipient and according to available flights, then deliver to the door in any emirate once the shipment is released. For Saudi cities far from the three main airports, such as Tabuk, Qassim and Hail, we consolidate shipments and truck them to the nearest major airport when that is faster than an irregular direct flight.
Where does the time go in an air shipment?
The flight itself between Riyadh or Dammam and Dubai is short, but the full 24 to 48 hours is spread over stages the customer never sees:
- 1Collection and packing
We collect from your home or office, weigh and measure the shipment and repack it if needed. - 2Handover to the cargo terminal
Delivered before the flight cut-off, with an air waybill issued. - 3Security screening
The shipment goes through screening, and any undeclared contents stop it here. - 4The flight
To the chosen UAE airport. - 5Customs release
The declaration and documents are checked at the arrival airport. - 6Delivery
The shipment is trucked from the airport to the recipient’s address.
What delays an air shipment most is not the flight but arriving after cut-off, undeclared contents, or a missing invoice for commercial goods. That is why we ask for an exact description and value from the start.
What is prohibited or restricted in air freight to the UAE?
Aircraft rules are stricter than truck rules, because a fire or leak in the air is a serious hazard. This list covers the common cases, and we review every shipment before booking:
Not accepted by air
Loose lithium batteries, gas and lighters, flammable materials and hazardous chemicals.
Restricted, permit needed
Perfumes and aerosols, devices with built-in batteries, prescription medicines and drones.
Banned from entering the UAE
Weapons, narcotics, counterfeit currency, fake branded goods and material offensive to public morals.
Certificate needed
Dates, food, plants and seeds may require health or agricultural certificates.
Perfumes and batteries by air
These are the two most common reasons shipments are stopped at security. If you are sending perfumes, or the parcel contains a power bank or loose batteries, it is usually better to send it by road through Al Batha, where it arrives in a few days without complications.
Documents required for air freight to the UAE
We issue the air waybill in your name and follow the customs declaration at the arrival airport. Saudi goods accompanied by a GCC certificate of origin are normally treated like national products within the GCC customs union. See our customs clearance and air freight service pages.
How should you pack an air shipment?
- Use a double-wall carton sized close to the contents to keep volumetric weight down.
- Fill gaps with light padding so nothing moves.
- Keep electronics in their original boxes where possible.
- Seal any permitted liquids tightly and place them in a sealed bag inside the carton.
- Write the recipient’s name and UAE phone number inside and outside the carton.
Delivery after arrival in the UAE

Once the shipment is released at the airport, a delivery truck takes it to the address. Delivery within Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi is quickest because they sit close to the airports, while Al Ain, Al Dhafra, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah need extra time on the road. The recipient can also collect the shipment in person from the cargo building if preferred.
What does not fly? The road alternative
Cars are not normally flown; they travel on road carriers through Al Batha and then Al Ghuwaifat, from SAR 1,100 for a saloon on a shared carrier from Riyadh. Furniture, large appliances and palletised goods also go by road, because volumetric weight makes flying them very expensive. The cheapest way to send air freight to the UAE
- Shrink the carton to fit the contents; volumetric weight is usually what drives the price.
- Combine several small parcels into one shipment instead of sending them separately.
- Fly only what is urgent and send the rest by road.
- Hand over early, before flight cut-off, to avoid rush-service charges.
- Declare the contents accurately so the shipment is not returned from screening.
Common mistakes with air freight to the UAE
- Packing a power bank or loose batteries in the parcel without declaring them.
- Giving the recipient’s Saudi phone number instead of their UAE one.
- Using a large carton for small contents and paying double.
- Shipping commercial goods described as a personal gift.
- Choosing air for a heavy shipment that is not urgent.
