Gulf International Shipping moves household furniture from Riyadh to the UAE door to door. We survey, dismantle and pack your home in Riyadh, drive it in a closed truck through the Al Batha and Al Ghuwaifat border posts, then unload and reassemble it in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or any other emirate, with 3–5 days on the road. A single room or studio starts from SAR 1,390, a 2–3 bedroom apartment from SAR 4,150, a villa from SAR 8,300, and a sedan on a shared car carrier from SAR 1,100. Book a survey on 0568829975.

This guide is for anyone relocating a whole home, or part of one, from Riyadh to the Emirates: an employee transferred to Dubai, a family settling in Abu Dhabi, or a resident furnishing a new flat in Sharjah. It covers how each item in the house is handled, when furniture qualifies for UAE customs exemption, what each move size costs, and what to prepare before loading day.
How does a household move from Riyadh to the UAE work?
The drive itself takes 3–5 days, but a home move starts earlier with the survey and packing. This is the schedule we usually follow with Riyadh families, from the first call until the last bed is assembled in the new home:
- 1Day 1: survey and inventory
Our surveyor visits the house, or walks through it with you on a video call, and logs every item with a photo. That inventory gives the shipment volume in cubic metres and becomes the packing list UAE customs asks for. - 2Day 2: dismantling and packing
The crew takes apart beds, wardrobes and kitchen units, wraps each piece in the layers it needs, and labels every carton with its room name so the unloading team knows where it goes. - 3Day 3: loading and declarations
The closed truck is loaded in the morning, and the export declaration is lodged electronically on the Saudi Fasah platform about 24 hours before the truck reaches the border. - 4Day 4: Al Batha, then Al Ghuwaifat
The truck heads out of Riyadh towards Haradh and on to Al Batha, clears Saudi exit formalities, then UAE entry at Al Ghuwaifat, which runs 24 hours a day. - 5Day 5: delivery in Abu Dhabi or Dubai
Abu Dhabi is the first major city on the road, with Dubai roughly 90 minutes to two hours beyond it. Furniture is unloaded and placed room by room according to the labels. - 6Day 6: assembly and the northern emirates
The crew reassembles beds and wardrobes and mounts what needs mounting; loads for Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah typically arrive around this day.
The plan can gain a day when a small home is packed and loaded on the same day, and it can slip when a document is missing at the border. That is why we collect paperwork before loading day, not after.
The truck route from Riyadh to Dubai and Abu Dhabi
There is only one land border between Saudi Arabia and the UAE: Al Batha, in Al Udayd governorate of the Eastern Province, facing Al Ghuwaifat on the Emirati side. Every furniture truck leaving Riyadh for the UAE crosses here, whichever emirate it is heading to.
From Riyadh, trucks usually run south-east towards Haradh and then on to Al Batha. After Al Ghuwaifat they follow the UAE coastal highway through Al Dhafra region to Abu Dhabi and then Dubai. Riyadh to Dubai is about 1,000 km, and Abu Dhabi is less because it comes first on the same road.

Is there another road besides Al Batha?
No. Al Batha is the only land crossing between the Kingdom and the UAE. The Salwa crossing serves Qatar and has nothing to do with UAE shipments, and there is no border post called “Al Sila crossing”.
Approximate furniture moving prices from Riyadh to the UAE
At Gulf International Shipping, moving a single room from Riyadh to the UAE starts from SAR 1,390 and an apartment from SAR 4,150. The first figure in each row is our “from” price; the second is the usual upper level in the market for the same item:
Note: road transit from Riyadh is usually 3 to 5 days depending on the emirate and customs clearance, and air freight takes 24 to 48 hours.
Other household items customers often ask about, all quoted as “from” prices:
The gap between the lower and upper figure comes down to the real volume of furniture, the truck type (shared or dedicated), the floor level in Riyadh and in the UAE, and whether anything needs a wooden crate. The final quote follows the survey and uses the same figures we send you on WhatsApp.
What we move from your Riyadh home
A household is not one block of cargo. Each kind of item needs its own dismantling and wrapping method, and a single careless piece can mean a scratch you only discover after four days on the road. Here is what we move and how:
Bedrooms and wardrobes
Beds are broken down into panels, and screws and hinges go into small numbered bags taped to the piece they belong to. Large wardrobes have their doors removed and wrapped separately, because mirrors and glass panels are the parts most likely to crack. Mattresses go into heavy plastic covers against dust and humidity.

Majlis seating, sofas and rugs
A traditional Arabic majlis with floor cushions and backrests is light but bulky, and it is one of the largest items in many Saudi homes. We compress the cushions into large bags to save space. Sofas get a layer of bubble wrap and then a fabric cover. Rugs are rolled, never folded, because folding leaves creases in handmade and wool rugs that are hard to remove.
Glass, marble and fragile décor
Glass and marble tables, large mirrors and chandeliers are packed in wooden crates built to size. It adds a little to the cost, but it is the only safe way through a journey of around 1,000 km that includes a customs inspection where part of the load may be opened.
Kitchen and appliances
The fridge is emptied and dried a day before loading, and the washing machine drum is locked with transit bolts if you still have them. Crockery is wrapped piece by piece and stood upright in cartons rather than laid flat. Kitchen cabinets travel if they can be dismantled; wall-fixed kitchens are assessed during the survey.
Air conditioners
Split AC units are removed by a technician who pumps the refrigerant down into the outdoor unit before disconnecting the pipes, then both units are wrapped. Window units travel whole. Before deciding to ship them, check with your UAE landlord: many flats there have central air conditioning and will not need them.
Save before you pack
Every cubic metre you leave behind in Riyadh lowers the price. Cheap, heavy furniture such as particle-board wardrobes can cost more to ship than to replace in the UAE.
Is used furniture exempt from UAE customs?
Under Dubai Customs policy on personal effects and household goods, used furniture is usually exempt for two groups: UAE nationals returning home for good, and expatriates moving to live in the UAE for the first time. Several conditions apply:
- The furniture must be used, not new, and in quantities reasonable for furnishing a home rather than for trade.
- The shipment must be in the name of the person entitled to the exemption.
- Proof of residence or employment in the UAE, such as a residence visa or Emirates ID, an employment contract or a tenancy contract.
- A full packing list of the contents, which we prepare from the survey-day inventory.
New appliances are not exempt
New items you bought recently and have not used are outside the exemption and attract customs duty (usually 5%) plus 5% VAT. Keep their invoices, and do not pack them in the same cartons as used belongings.
We advise every customer to check their own situation before shipping, because the exemption is decided by UAE customs, not by the moving company. We will not promise a full exemption since that is not our call, but we prepare the file the way the UAE clearing agent expects it. The full rules are in our guide to UAE customs rules for used household goods.
Documents needed to move furniture from Riyadh to the UAE
If you are shipping before your UAE residence is issued, tell us early. The furniture can then be stored until the paperwork is complete rather than waiting at the border.
Shipping your car with the furniture
Many families move their car in the same week as the furniture. Gulf International Shipping carries cars from Riyadh on a shared carrier from SAR 1,100 for a sedan and SAR 1,390 for an SUV, and on an enclosed hydraulic flatbed for luxury cars from SAR 2,300. Details are on our car shipping from Saudi Arabia to the UAE page.
- Saudi side: export plates and a final export certificate from the traffic department, an Absher authorisation, a clearance letter showing no outstanding fines, the registration card (istimara) and the owner’s ID.
- UAE side: 5% customs duty on the car’s value plus 5% VAT. Some emirates require an imported car to be no more than about 10 years old, so check your emirate’s rules before shipping.
- The Saudi-car advantage: it is GCC-spec, which makes inspection and registration in the UAE simpler than for non-GCC cars.
- Before handover: a quarter tank of fuel, no personal items inside, and photos from every side. Electric cars are handed over with the battery between 20% and 50%.
Do not fill the car with belongings
Cartons stuffed inside a shipped car complicate the border inspection and can hold up the whole truck. Put those items in the furniture load and on the packing list.
Air freight from Riyadh to the UAE for urgent items
Some things cannot wait for the truck: clothes for the first days, school records, work equipment. Gulf International Shipping flies them from King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh to Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah within 24–48 hours, from SAR 46 per kg. Air is too expensive for furniture by weight, but it complements the road move well. More in air freight from Saudi Arabia to the UAE.
Shipping just cartons and personal belongings
If you are not moving furniture and only need to send cartons of clothes, books and kitchenware, there is no need to book a truck. A carton starts from SAR 92, a suitcase from SAR 138 and loose items from SAR 14 per kg, consolidated with other customers’ goods on the same truck. See carton and parcel shipping to the UAE.
Delivery across the UAE from Riyadh
We deliver furniture to all seven emirates. These approximate transit times run from loading day in Riyadh to delivery:
In residential towers in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, some building managements ask for a move-in permit in advance and set lift booking hours. Check with your building before delivery day and send us the permit so we can time the truck’s arrival to the allowed slot.

Which Riyadh districts do we collect from?
We collect from every Riyadh district and the nearby governorates. North Riyadh (Al Malqa, Hittin, Al Narjis, Al Yasmin, Al Arid, Al Sahafa) is mostly villas and duplexes, which need a larger crew. Central areas (Al Olaya, Al Sulimaniyah, Al Malaz) have many apartment buildings whose lifts may not take large pieces, so we use the stairs or an external hoist. In east Riyadh (Al Rawdah, Al Naseem, Al Rayyan), the west (Dhahrat Laban, Al Suwaidi, Irqah) and the south (Al Shifa, Al Aziziyah) we plan collection around how easily a truck can enter the street. We also cover Diriyah, Al Kharj and Al Muzahimiyah.
How is the cost of a move to the UAE calculated?
- Volume in cubic metres: the main driver, which is why every quote starts with an inventory.
- Shared or dedicated truck: shared is cheaper; dedicated is faster because it leaves as soon as it is loaded.
- Floor level and access: both in Riyadh and at the new home in the UAE.
- Packing: basic packing by you, full professional packing from SAR 920, or wooden crates for delicate pieces.
- Emirate: the northern emirates add distance and about a day.
- New appliances: subject to customs duty on their value.
- Insurance: optional, calculated as a percentage of the value you declare.
Example: a two-bedroom apartment in Al Yasmin plus a sedan, going to Dubai Marina. The apartment starts from SAR 4,150 and the sedan from SAR 1,100, so the starting point is about SAR 5,250. Customs clearance from SAR 460 is added if it is not already part of the agreement, and full professional packing from SAR 920 if you want it.
The cheapest way to move furniture from Riyadh to the UAE
- Choose a shared load if you are not in a hurry; you only pay for the space your furniture takes.
- Get rid of cheap, heavy pieces before the survey by selling or donating them.
- Pack the cartons yourself and leave the large furniture and fragile pieces to us.
- Avoid peak seasons such as the start of summer and the end of the school year, when demand for trucks is highest.
- Ship the car on the same booking to save coordination and clearance time.
Common mistakes when moving furniture from Riyadh to the UAE
- Packing new appliances in cartons with used belongings without listing them on the packing list.
- Shipping before the UAE residence is issued, leaving the furniture waiting at the border.
- Forgetting the move-in permit from the tower management in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
- Leaving liquids, perfumes or aerosol cans in cartons; they are flammable and refused in transport.
- Not photographing valuable pieces before packing, leaving nothing to prove their condition at delivery.
Prohibited items when shipping furniture to the UAE
These are the common prohibited items that must not travel with the furniture; anything unclear is checked before loading:
- Flammables: gas, fuel, large quantities of perfume and aerosol sprays.
- Loose lithium batteries.
- Weapons, ammunition and fireworks.
- Medicines without a prescription, and any narcotics.
- Cash and valuable jewellery (carry them with you).
- Restricted items that need a permit: drones, seeds and plants.
