Why Dammam is the closest starting point for shipping to the UAE
If you live in the Eastern Province, you have an advantage that customers in Jeddah or Riyadh don’t: the road to the Emirates is short. A truck leaving Dammam doesn’t have to cross the Kingdom from west to east. It heads south to Al-Ahsa and then straight on to Al Batha. That keeps the trip shorter, fuel costs lower and your belongings in the truck for fewer days.
Being close doesn’t mean skipping the paperwork. Al Batha is the only land border crossing between Saudi Arabia and the UAE, so every truck bound for Abu Dhabi, Dubai or Sharjah passes through it, wherever it started. Your Dammam shipment joins the same queue as loads from Riyadh and Jeddah. What actually makes the difference is having the documents ready before the truck arrives, and Gulf International Shipping sorts that out before loading, not after.
The Eastern Province is also an industrial and trading hub, with Jubail Industrial City, Dammam’s Second Industrial City and the palm groves of Al-Ahsa. So shipments from here aren’t only household moves to Dubai. They include factory equipment, pallets of goods and chilled dates. This guide covers each one, with prices.
Route and transit time from Dammam to the UAE
- Distance: about 900 km by road from Dammam to Dubai. Abu Dhabi is closer, as it sits along the way.
- Usual road: out of Dammam towards Hofuf in Al-Ahsa, along the Al Batha road to the border, across to Al Ghuwaifat, then on through Abu Dhabi to Dubai.
- By road: 2 to 4 working days door to door, depending on the emirate and how quickly customs clears.
- By air: a day or two (24–48 hours) between King Fahd International Airport and the UAE’s airports.
- By sea: roughly 5 to 7 days from King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam to Jebel Ali. A full container can take 7 to 14 days once both ports’ procedures are included.
Your shipment day by day, from Dammam to the Emirates
Day 1: Our crew comes to your home or warehouse in Dammam, Khobar or Dhahran. They check and photograph your items, pack them and number the cartons. Then everything goes onto the truck, or to our consolidation warehouse if it’s a shared load. Before the day is out, the shipment is lodged on Fasah, a full day ahead of the truck’s arrival at the border.
Day 2: The truck drives south through Al-Ahsa and on to Al Batha. At the border the documents are checked against the load and the Saudi exit is stamped. The truck then crosses to Al Ghuwaifat, where the UAE customs declaration is lodged and the cargo is inspected if requested. The crossing runs 24 hours a day, so a truck arriving at night doesn’t have to wait for morning.
Days 3 and 4: After Ghuwaifat the truck passes through Al Dhafra and reaches Abu Dhabi first, dropping off Abu Dhabi and Al Ain consignments. It then continues to Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman, and finally Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. On arrival, the driver or our coordinator calls you to fix a delivery time. If you asked for it, the crew unpacks and reassembles your furniture.

Which Eastern Province cities do we collect from?
You don’t need to bring anything to an office or a warehouse. The Gulf International Shipping crew comes to you anywhere in the Eastern Province. Loads are then consolidated in Dammam, or a full truck heads straight for Al-Ahsa. Our main pickup areas:
Al-Ahsa residents in particular benefit from their location, because the truck passes through on its way to the border. Their load can often go on the same run without coming back to Dammam, which cuts delivery time.
Moving furniture from Dammam and Khobar to the UAE
Most people shipping from the Eastern Province to the Emirates are families and employees starting a job in Abu Dhabi or Dubai. They need more than a truck. Beds and wardrobes have to be taken apart carefully, packing has to stand up to the heat on the road, and everything has to be put back together in the new home. Our crew works in this order:
- Photos and inventory: we photograph valuable pieces and list the contents of each carton. UAE customs asks for exactly this list.
- Dismantling: we take down beds, wardrobes and big tables, and every set of fittings goes into its own labelled bag fixed to its piece.
- Packing: bubble wrap first, then heavy-duty cardboard or blankets, then tape. Glass and mirrors go into wooden crates.
- Appliances: empty and defrost the fridge the day before; we lock the washing machine drum and send a technician for the AC units.
- Loading: heavy items at the bottom, fragile ones on top, and straps so nothing shifts on the road.

A complete bedroom from Dammam starts from SAR 920 and a full household from SAR 4,600, with professional packing included when you book the whole move. If you’re moving to the UAE to live there for the first time, used furniture is normally duty-free under clear conditions, explained in UAE customs rules for used household goods. For a full household move from anywhere in the Kingdom, Furniture shipping from Saudi Arabia to the UAE walks through every stage.
A tip for families in Dhahran and Khobar
If your UAE job contract is ready, keep a copy of your residence visa or Emirates ID before shipping. That document proves you’re a new resident. Without it, your belongings may be treated as ordinary goods.
Car shipping from Dammam to the UAE
Gulf International Shipping moves cars from the Eastern Province to the Emirates by road only, on enclosed car carriers or private flatbeds. Each car is covered and strapped down at the wheels. Prices from Dammam:
Before shipping you need an export certificate and export plates from the traffic department, an Absher authorisation if the owner isn’t present, and all fines settled. On arrival, expect UAE customs to levy 5% duty plus 5% VAT on the car’s value, and be aware that several emirates set an age ceiling of roughly a decade for imported cars. Full details are in Car shipping from Saudi Arabia to the UAE.
Shipping goods and equipment from Jubail and Dammam to the UAE
Factories and traders in the Eastern Province have two main options. Shared truck (LTL) suits anyone sending one ton or a few tons. It starts from SAR 740 per ton, and the goods wait until the truck fills up with other loads. Full truckload (FTL) gets you a 15-metre trailer to yourself from SAR 6,450, and it leaves as soon as it’s loaded.
Heavy equipment from Jubail and Ras Tanura, such as generators, compressors and plant parts between 1 and 5 tons, starts from SAR 9,250 on a trailer suited to the weight. Goods of Saudi origin are normally treated as national products within the GCC customs union when they travel with a GCC certificate of origin, so you don’t pay duty twice. More in Goods shipping from Saudi Arabia to the UAE.
Shipping Al-Ahsa dates and chilled food to the UAE
Al-Ahsa is one of the largest palm oases in the world, and many customers send its dates as gifts to family in the Emirates or as stock for shops there. Dates don’t cope well with heat, so they travel in refrigerated transport. Shipping 50 kg of chilled dates starts from SAR 370. Commercial quantities need a health or agricultural certificate, and we prepare the paperwork with you before dispatch.
Air freight from Dammam to Dubai and Abu Dhabi
When time matters more than cost, air freight from King Fahd International Airport in Dammam is the answer. Shipments usually reach Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah airport within 24 to 48 hours and are then delivered to the address. Starting prices at Gulf International Shipping:
- Documents up to 1 kg: from SAR 138.
- Small parcel up to 5 kg: from SAR 185.
- Bigger loads: SAR 46 per kg to start with, billed on the real weight or the size-based weight, whichever comes out higher.
Air suits official papers, small electronics, urgent spare parts and product samples. Furniture and large volumes cost far more by air than by road, which only takes a few days from Dammam anyway. More in Air freight from Saudi Arabia to Dubai.
Is sea freight from Dammam to Jebel Ali a better option?
Dammam is a port city, and ships run from King Abdulaziz Port to Jebel Ali in Dubai in roughly 5 to 7 days. A full container can stretch to 7–14 days with procedures at both ports. But the road from Dammam is short. A truck usually arrives before the ship has even been unloaded, and it delivers straight to your door with no extra haul from the port.
So we only recommend sea freight for full commercial containers that aren’t urgent, or for goods going into the Jebel Ali free zone itself. For families and individuals, road freight from Dammam is generally cheaper, faster and simpler.
Customs clearance: from Fasah to Al Batha and on to Al Ghuwaifat
Clearance happens in three stages. First, on the Saudi side: roughly a day before the truck gets to the border, we lodge your packing list and ID or CR copy on Fasah. Second, at Al Batha: the load is checked against the declaration and the exit is stamped. Third, at Al Ghuwaifat: the UAE customs declaration is lodged, any duty is paid, and the cargo is inspected if required.
Do you pay duty on used furniture?
Two groups normally bring used furniture and personal effects in free of duty: Emirati citizens coming home to settle, and expatriates taking up residence in the country for the first time. The goods have to be second-hand, in household quantities, listed in full on a packing list and backed by a residence or job document. New appliances and new items aren’t covered and are subject to duty.
For opening hours and how trucks clear the border, read our Al Batha border crossing guide for UAE shipments.
Documents required for shipping from Dammam to the UAE
What can’t you ship from Dammam to the UAE?
These are the most common items we refuse or that need a permit in advance. Treat the list as a guide; we confirm each case individually:
- Prohibited: explosives and flammables such as gas cylinders and petrol, weapons and ammunition, narcotics, counterfeit currency and fake goods.
- Not accepted for freight: loose lithium batteries and hazardous chemicals without a safety data sheet.
- Permit needed: drones, two-way radio equipment, large quantities of prescription medicines, seeds and plants.
- Better carried yourself: cash, jewellery and important original documents.
Delivery across the UAE: how long from Dammam to each emirate?
After Ghuwaifat the truck delivers from west to east, so Abu Dhabi comes before Dubai, and Dubai before the northern emirates. Approximate times from pickup in Dammam:

Shipping from outside the Eastern Province? See Land freight from Riyadh to the UAE and Shipping from Jeddah to the UAE. Transit times are longer there because of the distance.
How is the cost of shipping from Dammam to the UAE worked out?
The final price isn’t a fixed number. It depends on a few things about your shipment:
- Volume and weight: shared loads are charged on volume or weight, whichever is higher. A big sofa takes up space even if it’s light.
- Type of truck: shared is cheaper, private is faster and runs to a fixed date.
- Emirate: the further north and east you go, towards Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, the more it costs.
- Packing and services: wooden crates, dismantling and reassembly, an AC technician.
- Type of cargo: chilled goods and heavy equipment need dedicated vehicles.
- Insurance: optional, usually a small percentage of the declared value.
Example: an employee in Khobar is moving to Abu Dhabi with a complete bedroom, 10 small cartons and a fridge. The estimate starts at SAR 920 for the bedroom + 10 × 138 = SAR 1,380 for the cartons + SAR 740 for the fridge, roughly SAR 3,040 before any discount for booking the whole move. Once the load is bigger than a small apartment, the full-household rate (from SAR 4,600) works out cheaper than pricing item by item.
The cheapest way to ship from the Eastern Province to the UAE
- Choose a shared truck if you aren’t in a hurry. Waiting a day or two saves a noticeable amount.
- Declutter before you ship: shipping cheap old furniture can cost more than buying a replacement in Dubai.
- Pack small items into medium cartons rather than dozens of bags and suitcases.
- Book early, ahead of the busy family-moving periods at the start of holidays and the school year.
- Send heavy items by road and only the light, urgent ones by air.
Mistakes Dammam customers make when shipping to the UAE
- Shipping new appliances still in their boxes with used furniture, then getting a surprise duty bill.
- Sending an incomplete packing list. Customs may hold the load to check the cartons.
- Forgetting to settle traffic fines before applying for the car’s export certificate.
- Leaving a gas cylinder or lots of perfume inside the cartons. Both are flammable.
- Choosing sea freight for a small household, when road is faster and cheaper from Dammam.
- Not giving an exact UAE address or a receiver who can be reached on delivery day.
