Gulf International Shipping offers air freight from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain from Riyadh, Jeddah, Madinah and Taif airports to Bahrain International Airport in Muharraq, with customs clearance and delivery to the receiver’s door in 24–48 hours depending on the flight schedule. Air rates open at SAR 13.8 a kilo, billed on scale weight or volumetric weight, depending on which comes out heavier. Because Bahrain sits right next to the Eastern Province, the road alternative over the King Fahd Causeway starts from SAR 46 for a small parcel and usually arrives from Dammam the same day.
Bahrain is a special case among Gulf destinations. From Dammam or Al Khobar, air isn’t worth considering; the drive takes under an hour. From Riyadh, road and air take about the same time. From Jeddah, Madinah, Taif and Tabuk, though, a flight saves whole days. So this page opens with the question that saves you money: do you actually need air freight from your city?

Is air freight faster than road to Bahrain? It depends on your city
Distances between Saudi cities and Bahrain vary enormously: about 70–90 km from Dammam, roughly 450–500 km from Riyadh, around 1,350–1,400 km from Jeddah and some 1,650–1,700 km from Tabuk. So one piece of air-freight advice can’t fit every city. The table sums up what we at Gulf International Shipping tell our customers:
The bottom line: the further you are from the east coast, the more a plane is worth. An urgent shipment from Jeddah can land in Bahrain before a truck has even passed Riyadh, while one from Al Khobar arrives by road before a flight could be booked. And if the load is heavy and not urgent, road is far cheaper from any city.
Approximate prices for air cargo from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain
Air cargo with us costs from SAR 13.8 per kilogram, roughly 8% under the lowest rate published for this lane. The higher figure in the table is the usual ceiling for very small or sensitive consignments that need special handling. We have put the road alternatives alongside, because many people who ask about air are well served by a truck.
Note: air freight takes 24–48 hours to the door depending on flights and clearance; road freight takes from one day from the Eastern Province to six days from Tabuk. The final air rate is confirmed at booking according to the airport, weight and dimensions.
We don’t publish a fixed minimum charge for air shipments because it varies between airports and carriers; WhatsApp us the kilos and the carton measurements, and a figure comes back to you. To compare every Bahrain road lane, see shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain.
How do airlines work out the chargeable weight to Bahrain?
On a plane, a carton pays for the room it takes in the hold, not just for its heft. The carrier produces two figures, the scale weight and a volumetric weight equal to the three dimensions in centimetres multiplied together and divided by 6,000 at most airlines, then invoices the larger.
Example: a 50 × 40 × 45 cm carton that weighs 8 kg on the scale. The product is 90,000; divided by 6,000 that gives 15 kg, so you pay for 15 kg, from roughly SAR 207 (15 × 13.8). The same carton travels by consolidated road freight from Riyadh from SAR 138. That gap is why we ask for dimensions before weight.
Cut the size before you cut the weight
Use a carton that fits the contents exactly, remove empty space and dismantle anything that comes apart. A carton ten centimetres smaller in each direction can almost halve the chargeable weight.
Saudi airports with cargo flights to Bahrain
- King Khalid International Airport, Riyadh: some 421 km in a straight line, around 75 minutes of flying. We collect from any Riyadh district and hand the shipment in at the cargo terminal.
- King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah: about 1,273 km by air, a flight of roughly two hours and ten minutes, serving Jeddah, Makkah, Rabigh and nearby towns.
- Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz Airport, Madinah: flights to Bahrain run on schedule, either direct or with a stop.
- Taif airport: flights available on schedule, or we route through Jeddah when that is quicker.
- Tabuk airport: cargo usually goes through a connecting hub, with an average journey of about seven hours.
- Eastern Province: there is no regular air route between Dammam and Bahrain, and no need for one; a truck covers the distance in under an hour.
In every case we confirm the flight and available space when you book. Airline schedules change, and we don’t promise a departure until it is actually booked.
What gets sent to Bahrain by air?
Air freight suits anything light and urgent or high in value. These are the consignments our customers most often fly to Bahrain:
- Documents and official papers: contracts, certificates and transaction papers that need signing by a deadline.
- Commercial samples: product samples for a client in Manama or for an exhibition.
- Spare parts: a failed part that is stopping a production line, a car or a machine at a Bahrain plant.
- Small electronics: phones, laptops and cameras, within battery restrictions.
- Permitted personal medicines: with a prescription and in personal quantities, under the Bahraini Ministry of Health rules.
- Gifts and light products: clothing, perfume in limited amounts, and dates in sealed packs.
Furniture, large appliances and cars are not flown to Bahrain, because the cost multiplies for very little gain. They belong on a truck: see furniture moving from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain and car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain.
Prohibited and restricted items for air freight to Bahrain
What airlines restrict
These items fall under the rules for carrying dangerous goods by air. An airline may refuse them or accept them only with special packing and paperwork:
- Loose lithium batteries and power banks.
- Perfumes and alcohol-based products in large quantities.
- Aerosols, gas cylinders, lighters and matches.
- Paints, solvents and flammable materials.
- Chemicals, concentrated cleaners and corrosive substances.
What Bahraini rules prohibit
Beyond airline restrictions, Bahrain bans or restricts certain items whatever the transport mode. The main ones, according to published official guides, are:
- Narcotics of every kind, including CBD oil.
- Small wireless drones and model aircraft, and children’s toys that launch balls or darts.
- Cultured pearls, ivory and rhino horn.
- Publications and images offensive to religion or public morals.
- Medicine the Ministry of Health has not approved, and meat or poultry lacking a health certificate and halal slaughter certificate.
Ask before you pack, not after
If your shipment contains a device with a large battery, perfume or medicine, send us a photo before you seal it. An air shipment rejected at the cargo terminal misses its flight and may need repacking from scratch.
Customs duty and VAT on air shipments in Bahrain
Customs treat an air shipment exactly like a road shipment; the difference is that air freight costs more, so it weighs more heavily on the tax. Bahrain applies VAT of 10% to imported goods, and the base includes the freight and insurance as well as any duty.
- Goods made outside the GCC: a 5% duty first, then the 10% VAT on the total including that duty.
- Products of Saudi factories with proof of GCC origin: no customs duty, though the 10% VAT remains except on the limited goods the law excludes.
- Second-hand belongings of someone relocating to Bahrain: exempt under conditions, including arrival within six months of the owner; details are in Bahrain used household goods customs.
Example: samples worth SAR 800, with SAR 200 of air freight, made outside the GCC. On a taxable SAR 1,000 the duty is SAR 50, and a tenth of the resulting SAR 1,050 adds SAR 105 in VAT, close to SAR 155 all told. That is why we declare the real invoice value and never rely on any supposed small-parcel exemption threshold.
Documents required for air freight to Bahrain
We handle clearance in Bahrain through a licensed broker and send you anything they need before the plane lands, so the shipment doesn’t sit in the warehouse. More on clearance: customs clearance service.
How to pack your air shipment to Bahrain

- Double-wall cartons: ordinary cartons split under repeated handling in cargo halls.
- Inner padding: bubble wrap or crushed paper around every item so nothing moves when the carton is shaken.
- Proper sealing: wide tape across every edge in an H pattern.
- Clear labels: the receiver’s name, Bahraini number and area, with a copy inside the carton too.
- Liquids: tightly closed containers inside a sealed plastic bag, so nothing leaks onto the rest of the load.
- Devices: in their original box where possible, with batteries installed rather than loose.
If you have no time to pack, we collect the items and pack them ourselves to dimensions that keep volumetric weight as low as possible.
Collection at Bahrain International Airport and delivery to the door
Bahrain International Airport is on Muharraq Island, north-east of Manama. Once the aircraft lands, the shipment moves to the cargo terminal and the broker starts clearance and pays any duty and VAT due. The shipment then leaves on a delivery truck for the address, whether that is an office in Seef, a home in Riffa or a warehouse in Salman Industrial City.

Because the airport is in Muharraq, delivery to Muharraq and Manama is usually quicker than to Zallaq or Durrat Al Bahrain in the south, but the difference is a few hours, not days.
The road alternative: from the Eastern Province and Riyadh over the causeway
Before you book a flight, remember that Bahrain is joined to Saudi Arabia by the 25 km King Fahd Causeway. From Dammam and Al Khobar to Manama is about 70–90 km, under an hour’s drive, and the load is usually handed over the same day, or within 24 hours when the bridge is busy or the Fasah appointment falls late. From Riyadh a dedicated truck arrives within 24–48 hours, about the same as air.
That is why we offer some customers a combined route: an urgent shipment from Jeddah or Madinah flies domestically to Riyadh or Dammam when that is faster on the day, then continues by road over the causeway. We choose what genuinely meets your deadline, not what looks quicker on paper. The road route is covered in land freight from Dammam to Bahrain and crossing procedures in the King Fahd Causeway truck shipping guide.
What about sea freight?
Commercial containers have a short sea lane from Dammam to Khalifa Bin Salman Port, which we can set up for businesses on request, but it is no use for small parcels or anything urgent.

The cheapest way to ship to Bahrain
If price matters more than hours, nothing beats a shared truck from any Saudi city, with SAR 46 for a small parcel and SAR 92 for a ten-kilo carton as opening prices. If it has to be air, these steps bring the bill down:
- Shrink the carton, because volumetric weight is usually what pushes the price up.
- Combine small items into one shipment instead of several separate ones.
- Put just the time-critical items on the plane and let everything else go by truck.
- If you are in the Eastern Province, don’t fly at all.
- Book early before holidays, when cargo space on flights fills up.
Common mistakes with air freight to Bahrain
- Sending a photo of the scale but no dimensions: the bill then comes in higher than expected because of volumetric weight.
- Forgetting the 10% VAT: Bahrain charges VAT, and it is calculated on the freight cost too.
- Packing loose batteries or lots of perfume: the shipment is turned back at the cargo terminal.
- Declaring less than the real value: customs may hold the shipment until the correct invoice is produced.
- Flying what doesn’t need a plane: a load from Al Khobar arrives by road before its flight could be booked.
- Incomplete receiver details: a wrong Bahraini mobile number delays delivery after clearance.
