Gulf International Shipping handles furniture moving from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain from start to finish: we dismantle and pack in your home in any Saudi city, drive a closed truck across the King Fahd Causeway, and reassemble every piece in your new flat or villa in Bahrain. A Khobar or Dammam household is usually unpacked in Bahrain on moving day or the next, Riyadh homes take 24–48 hours, and households in Jeddah, Makkah and Taif take 3–5 working days. Prices begin at SAR 735 when your bedroom rides a consolidated truck; a small household of up to 500 kg begins at SAR 1,100; a complete flat at SAR 2,300; and a 3–4 bedroom house filling a closed 13.6 m trailer at SAR 3,220.
This guide is written for the three kinds of customer we move every week: the employee whose job has moved to Manama and who wants the family home to follow, the Bahraini family coming back after years of living in the Kingdom, and the resident switching their Gulf base from one country to another. Before they ask about price, nearly all of them ask the same thing: will Bahraini customs charge me for my furniture? So that is where we start, before moving on to prices, transit times, packing, paperwork and delivery across Bahrain’s governorates.
In short
- Crossing: a single road link, the King Fahd Causeway: 25 km of bridges and embankments joining Khobar to the Bahraini shore at Al Jasra
- Transit time: Khobar and Dammam: same day to 24 hours · Riyadh: 24–48 hours · Jeddah, Makkah, Taif, Madinah: 3–5 working days · Tabuk, the longest haul: about 4–6 days
- Prices: shared-truck bedroom from SAR 735 · SAR 1,100 for a household of up to 500 kg · whole flat from SAR 2,300 · 3–4 bedroom house from SAR 3,220
- Customs: used furniture of someone relocating to live in Bahrain is duty-free on conditions, chiefly arrival within 6 months of the owner; anything bought new and made outside the Gulf is charged 5% duty, then 10% VAT
- Air freight: for urgent boxes only, from SAR 13.8 per kg, delivered within 24–48 hours depending on flights
- Delivery and assembly: anywhere in Bahrain, from Manama towers to Muharraq islands, Riffa compounds and Hamad Town villas

Is your used furniture duty-free when it enters Bahrain?
In most cases, yes, but in Bahrain the exemption depends on the person before it depends on the furniture. Bahrain Customs treats used personal effects and furniture as duty-free household goods when the owner is genuinely moving to live in the country. The basis is the unified GCC customs law, which exempts the used belongings of citizens returning after living abroad and of foreigners arriving to take up residence for the first time, under conditions set by the customs administration.
In practice, as summarised by international relocation firms working from Bahrain Customs instructions, the conditions are:
- You intend to live in Bahrain, not visit.
- The items are yours, already used, and for your own personal use, not for sale.
- The shipment arrives within six months of the date you yourself arrived in Bahrain.
- A valid residence permit carrying the official stamp and QR code, a clear front-and-back copy of your CPR card, and a copy of your passport.
- A detailed inventory, box by box, with books listed by title.
The six-month rule is the one people most often get wrong. Some websites say furniture is exempt “if it has been used for more than six months”. That is not the rule: the six months run from the day you arrive in Bahrain, not from the age of the furniture. Land in Manama at the start of a month, leave your furniture in storage for seven months, and you may lose the exemption even if the sofa is ten years old. That is why we plan your shipping date around your own move from day one.
What about new furniture and appliances?
Brand-new furniture and appliances still in their boxes are outside the exemption. Goods made outside the GCC attract a 5% customs duty in Bahrain, followed by 10% VAT calculated on the value including shipping and duty. A worked example: take a new imported sofa valued at SAR 1,000 with freight. Duty adds SAR 50; VAT is then 10% of SAR 1,050, or SAR 105; so the bill at the border comes to SAR 155. Furniture manufactured in the Kingdom or elsewhere in the Gulf is spared customs duty as long as a certificate of origin or an invoice showing the origin travels with them.
Be wary of “fully exempt” promises
Some movers tell customers that household goods to Bahrain are “fully exempt” or “zero duty” with no conditions at all. In reality the exemption has conditions, personal shipments into Bahrain are inspected, and vehicles fall outside household-goods relief altogether, with their own clearance. We walk through every scenario in Bahrain used household goods customs.
One practical tip: never pack new items in the same carton as old ones. We put new purchases in their own boxes with their invoices, so the used goods are inspected and exempted, the new goods are assessed on their own, and the whole shipment is not held up because of one undeclared appliance.
Approximate prices for furniture moving from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain
Our starting prices sit below those published by other movers on the Bahrain route, and each one covers loading, transport and the causeway crossing fee, which is charged by vehicle type and weight. Every cell shows two figures: the lowest price that item starts at with us, and the ceiling that heavier loads, or loads from a more distant city, usually reach.
Note: furniture loaded in the Eastern Province is normally delivered on loading day or the next, Riyadh furniture within 24–48 hours (2–4 days when consolidated), and furniture from the Hejaz cities within 3–5 working days; queues at the causeway and the timing of the Fasah booking can stretch any of these.
Starting prices for single items
If you are not moving a whole house but a kitchen, a few appliances or some artwork, these are the items customers ask about most:
To compare every city and every category, including cartons, goods and cars, our price hub is shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain.
How long does a furniture move from your city to Bahrain take?
Every truck bound for Bahrain ends up passing through the Eastern Province, because the causeway is the only road in. So the transit time is set by the distance from your city to Khobar, plus the wait at the causeway. The figures below are approximate and vary with the route and the pickup point:
This is where a dedicated truck and a shared one differ. A truck reserved for your furniture pulls away the moment the doors close; a consolidated one waits for other households to fill it, costing you a day or two but saving a good share of the price. Anyone living in Riyadh or the west, there is more detail in shipping from Riyadh to Bahrain and shipping from Jeddah to Bahrain.
Packing that copes with Bahrain’s humidity
Furniture that leaves dry Riyadh or Taif and is unwrapped in a seafront home in Juffair or Amwaj faces a big jump in humidity. Wood swells, mirrors fog, and fabric holds on to odours if it stays damp inside plastic. So we never wrap a piece in a single layer of film and call it done. We build the packing in layers:
- Contact layer: soft paper or cloth that lets air through and protects the finish from scratches.
- Absorbing layer: foam or corrugated board on edges and corners, plus moisture-absorber sachets in drawers and wardrobes.
- Outer barrier: stretched film that does not seal a wooden or upholstered piece completely airtight.
- Moving blankets: spread between items inside the truck box so wood never rubs against wood.
Glass, marble and chandeliers in wooden crates
Glass tabletops, marble, crystal chandeliers and large mirrors do not travel just wrapped. We build each one a wooden crate to size, lined with foam cut to the shape of the piece, so the piece stays locked in place on every bump of the highway. Small chandelier parts are taken off, numbered and seated in their own cut-out hollow.

Mattresses, sofas and rugs
Mattresses go into sealed mattress bags, sofas are wrapped after a protective cover goes over the fabric, and rugs are shaken out and rolled, never folded, so the pile does not crease. If you have a floor-seating majlis, we bundle the cushions and back-rests in numbered sets so the room can be laid out in Bahrain exactly as it was.
IKEA kitchens, air conditioners and appliances
The kitchen is the hardest part of any house, because it is fixed to the wall and connected to water and power. With IKEA and other flat-pack kitchens we take the units down one by one, number every door, shelf and hinge, and bag the screws in clear bags labelled with the unit number. Moving an IKEA kitchen with dismantling and installation starts from SAR 825. Since the new kitchen wall in Bahrain may be a different size, send us a photo and the measurements before we dismantle, so we know whether any unit will need cutting or adapting.
- Air conditioners: a technician pumps the split unit’s refrigerant back into the outdoor unit before removal, and the pipes are capped against dust and moisture.
- Fridges and freezers: switched off and drained a day before loading, and carried upright.
- Washing machines: the drum is locked with transit bolts or suitable packing so it cannot move.
- TVs: in the original box if you kept it, otherwise in a padded crate, and never laid flat.
Watch out for lithium batteries
Bahrain Customs usually refuses loose lithium batteries in personal shipments, such as power banks and spare batteries for bikes and tools. Carry them with you or leave them behind, but keep them out of the furniture cartons.
Loading day: dedicated dyna, trailer or shared truck?
We choose the vehicle after seeing your home, by video call or a visit, never by guesswork. These are the three usual options on the Bahrain route:
Before any piece is closed up we photograph it from every side and note its condition on the handover sheet: an old scratch here, a cracked chair leg there. That same sheet becomes the basis of the customs inventory, so you, we and customs all work from one clear document. Heavy items then go in first near the front of the box, lighter ones on top and behind, all strapped to rails on the truck wall.

What happens to your furniture on the King Fahd Causeway?
The causeway is 25 km long. Its Saudi end is at Aziziyah on the southern edge of Khobar; its Bahraini end is Al Jasra, a short drive west of Manama. Halfway across sits an artificial island known as Passport Island, which is really two connected islands: the western one is Saudi, where exit formalities happen, and the eastern one is Bahraini, home to Bahrain Customs. The truck stops on both, not just one.
The King Fahd Causeway Authority’s rules for freight are clear: each truck needs two Fasah bookings, one to exit through Saudi customs and one to enter through Bahraini customs, and the driver reports to the clearance office after each. He also carries his passport and a valid licence, the vehicle’s registration card, and a notarised letter from the owner allowing him to drive it, while the truck needs valid insurance for Bahrain, which can be issued in the JESR app or at the insurer’s counter on the causeway itself. We arrange all of this before the truck sets off, so it never reaches the causeway and then waits for a slot.
The causeway operates every day, but waiting times vary with the season and usually rise at weekends and during holidays. The JESR app shows the average crossing time, so we watch it and choose when to move. Your furniture stays sealed in the box and is only opened if a Bahraini customs officer asks, which is common with personal shipments; that is why an accurate, numbered inventory matters so much to us. For the full detail on truck weights and fees, read our King Fahd Causeway truck shipping guide.
Delivery and assembly across Bahrain’s four governorates
The causeway lands at Al Jasra, on the western coast, so drops in Saar, Budaiya or Hamad Town are the quickest of all. Every other area is a short drive on:
What slows delivery in Bahrain is rarely the road; it is the tower door. Most towers in Juffair, Seef and Reef Island require the service lift to be booked for a set time, some want notice from the tenant a day or two ahead, and management may refuse furniture through the main lobby. So we ask for the tower name and its management contact before shipping and book the slot while we are still in Saudi Arabia. In gated communities such as Durrat Al Bahrain and Amwaj, the truck needs an entry permit in your name.
On arrival the crew assembles bedrooms and wardrobes, hangs mirrors and pictures if you want, installs the kitchen and reconnects appliances, then collects the packing materials and takes them away. Finally we go through the handover sheet with you, piece by piece.

Documents required to move furniture to Bahrain
The paperwork comes from two sides: the sender in Saudi Arabia and the receiver in Bahrain. We collect and check it before loading, because one missing page means a truck parked on the Bahraini island.
If your Bahraini residence permit has not come through yet, tell us before shipping. A letter from your sponsor or employer is often accepted in that case, but the safer route is to time the shipment so the furniture does not arrive before your papers are complete.
What should you leave out of a furniture shipment to Bahrain?
These are the main prohibited and restricted items under Bahrain Customs rules and relocation guidance. If you are unsure about anything, we check it with you before packing:
- Narcotics of any kind, including CBD oil products.
- Weapons, including decorative swords and daggers.
- Used or retreaded tyres, and products containing asbestos.
- Radio-controlled planes, drones sold as models, and toy guns that shoot pellets or darts.
- Ivory, rhino horn and cultured pearls.
- Publications and figures that offend religion or public morals.
- Medicines in quantities or types that need a licence, plus two-way radios and satellite receivers, which may be held for review.
- Loose lithium batteries, gas cylinders and flammable materials.
Air freight for urgent items to Bahrain
Furniture itself rarely flies, because the cost per kilo is far higher and road freight from the Eastern Province arrives within hours. Air is useful, though, for the handful of boxes you need the moment you land: school uniforms, work files, a computer, personal medication. With Gulf International Shipping, air cargo into Bahrain International Airport is charged at SAR 13.8 a kilo and up, and a carton typically reaches the door in one to two days once flights and clearance are factored in.
- From Riyadh: the flight to Bahrain takes about an hour and a quarter.
- From Jeddah: about two hours and ten minutes.
- From Madinah, Taif and Tabuk: routing depends on the schedule available at booking.
- From Dammam and Khobar: road across the causeway is faster than any flight and arrives within hours.

Space on each flight is confirmed when you book, in line with the airlines’ timetables. For more on rates and routes, open air freight from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain.
Could the furniture go by sea instead?
There is a container sea link from Dammam’s King Abdulaziz Port to Khalifa Bin Salman Port, though it suits large commercial containers rather than household furniture. For a family move, the road across the causeway stays faster and cheaper; we offer the sea option to businesses on request.
Moving your car along with your furniture
Many families ship their car with their furniture. Household relief never covers a vehicle, so the car goes through customs separately, paying 5% duty and 10% VAT unless paperwork proves it was built in the Gulf or that its duty was settled on entry to the Kingdom. Cars older than 10 years are generally barred from import into Bahrain, and the authorities normally expect a left-hand-drive, GCC-spec vehicle, so we look over yours before booking.
On the Saudi side you need an export certificate, export plates and settled traffic fines. On the Bahraini side, the traffic directorate accepts, for cars coming from Saudi Arabia, any one of a final export certificate, a customs certificate or a detailed report, and on top of that a twelve-month insurance policy and a passed roadworthiness test. Expect SAR 780 upwards for a sedan sharing a carrier, SAR 1,100 upwards for a sedan alone on a hydraulic flatbed, and SAR 1,190 upwards for an SUV. The car has its own guide: car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain.
Can furniture wait in a warehouse until your Bahrain home is ready?
It often happens that the Saudi house goes back to its landlord before you get the keys to the Manama flat. In that case your furniture stays packed in a closed, roofed warehouse and heads for the causeway on the day your new home is ready. Just keep the six-month rule in mind and do not let storage run past it. We charge storage according to how many cubic metres you fill and for how long, and quote it alongside the move itself.
Moving office and clinic furniture to Bahrain
For companies opening a branch in Manama or relocating an office, we move desks, chairs, cabinets, computers and files. Prices start from SAR 1,650 per tonne, and we number each desk to match the new floor plan. Bear in mind that company furniture is not treated as exempt household goods; it is cleared as a commercial shipment with invoices and may need a Bahraini commercial registration. The commercial route is explained under goods shipping from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain.
How can you cut the cost of moving furniture to Bahrain?
- Declutter before the quote: every piece you sell in Saudi Arabia shrinks the volume, the price and the inspection list.
- Trade two days for consolidation: one room on a shared truck starts from SAR 735 instead of a whole dyna.
- Pack the light boxes yourself: clothes, books and unbreakable kitchenware; leave heavy and fragile pieces to us.
- Avoid weekends and holidays: causeway queues are longer and can add a day.
- Fly only what is essential: air starts from SAR 13.8 per kg, and road is far cheaper.
- Complete the exemption papers first: a shipment held at customs over one missing document costs days and waiting charges.
Mistakes that hold furniture up at Bahrain customs
- A vague inventory that just says “household goods”, so every carton gets opened.
- Boxed new appliances mixed in with used furniture and no invoices.
- Putting off the shipment until the six months after your arrival in Bahrain have passed.
- Power banks, spare batteries or decorative swords tucked in among the belongings.
- No service-lift booking at the tower, leaving the truck waiting outside.
- Sending furniture before the residence permit is issued without an employer letter.
