King Fahd Causeway truck shipping to Bahrain is the only road route for any truck from Saudi Arabia, and it requires a Fasah slot for Saudi customs plus a second one for Bahraini customs, papers for the driver and vehicle, truck insurance, and a load within the weight limits set by the causeway authority. At Gulf International Shipping we arrange all of this before the truck moves, carrying furniture, cars, cartons and goods from any Saudi city to the door in Bahrain. A small carton starts at SAR 92, a sedan on a multi-car carrier at SAR 780 and a full truck at SAR 2,300.
Most of what is written about the causeway is aimed at people driving across in their own cars: the toll, insurance, holiday queues. What matters to someone shipping goods is different. When are Fasah slots booked? What gets a truck turned back on the island? Why do transit times differ between companies over the same distance? This guide answers the freight questions specifically, based on the officially published truck procedure.

Where is the King Fahd Causeway and how do trucks cross it?
The causeway starts in the Al Aziziyah district south of Khobar and runs about 25 kilometres over the Gulf to Al Jasra, west of Manama. It is not one continuous bridge but a chain of bridges and earth embankments, run by the King Fahd Causeway Authority. Halfway along sits a large embankment known as Passport Island, about 660,000 square metres, which is really two linked islands: the western one for the Saudi border post and the eastern one for the Bahraini post.

Trucks have lanes and yards on the island separate from passenger cars. A truck first passes Saudi customs on the western side, where the export declaration is closed and the driver’s papers checked, then moves to the eastern side and Bahraini customs, where the load is matched against its data, may be inspected, and any duty and VAT due are paid. It then completes the causeway to Al Jasra, from where most of Bahrain is usually less than an hour away.
It helps to know that the “one-stop” procedure often mentioned for the causeway, where passport, vehicle and customs checks end at a single point, was introduced for travellers in their own cars. Trucks keep their own route with separate Saudi and Bahraini stations, so no carrier should promise you a “one-stop” crossing for its truck.
Fasah slots on both sides: the official truck procedure
On the trucks page of the King Fahd Causeway Authority’s website, the procedure is spelled out for each side. Saudi customs require booking a slot through the Fasah platform, then going to the customs clearance office; Bahraini customs require the same: a Fasah slot, then the clearance office. Most shipping company pages leave this detail out, and it explains why some trucks sit on the island for hours.
On the Saudi side, a ZATCA decision obliges carriers to book a Fasah slot before reaching a land customs port and to arrive at the booked time, with a margin of about three hours either way. A truck that turns up far too early or too late can be sent back into the queue. That is why Gulf International Shipping calculates the drive from the loading city to Khobar carefully before booking, especially for loads from Riyadh or the western cities.
The slot system made a big difference to truck waits. According to Gulf press reports after it came in, the average wait for Bahrain-bound trucks fell from over 12 hours to under an hour during the period measured. Bahraini customs also installed modern scanners and allowed data and duties to be processed before arrival. The practical upshot: a truck with its data ready and its slot booked crosses quickly, while one that arrives without a slot or with incomplete data waits.
Driver and truck documents for the King Fahd Causeway
The causeway authority lists the documents a truck driver must carry, along with anything the relevant authorities require for the type of load:
The paperwork for the cargo itself depends on what it is: used furniture needs an inventory plus the receiver’s residence permit and CPR card, a car needs its export papers, and commercial goods need an invoice, packing list and GCC certificate of origin. We send you the list for your shipment after booking and review it before loading.
Truck insurance at the causeway
Every vehicle entering Bahrain needs insurance valid there, and trucks are no exception. On the way out of the Kingdom the haulier buys that cover in JESR, the causeway authority’s app, or at an insurance counter on the bridge; trucks coming the other way buy it from the insurer’s offices or app. That is vehicle insurance, not cargo insurance; Gulf International Shipping insures your shipment by declared value on request, and photographs it at loading and on delivery.
The JESR app also shows the average crossing time, which we use to choose when the truck leaves Khobar, particularly in seasons when the causeway fills with travellers.
Weight limits and overweight charges on the causeway
This is what separates a carrier that knows the causeway from one that loads a truck to the roof. The authority sets a permitted gross weight and a maximum for each type of truck by number of axles:
In the band between the two columns a truck still crosses, but it pays: SAR 300 is levied on each axle carrying more than its share, and another SAR 300 on each tonne, or fraction of one, beyond the gross allowance. Past the third column, the authority can stop it crossing at all. Take a three-axle truck with single axles weighing 37 tonnes: it is two tonnes over the permitted weight, so it pays at least SAR 600, plus any overloaded-axle charges. That is why we weigh the load and spread it across the axles before departure, and never load beyond the limit; whatever a trip saves is lost in the fine.
Oversize dimensions carry further charges, which matter to anyone shipping equipment or long loads:
Household furniture, cartons and cars rarely come near these dimensions, but industrial equipment, steel structures and abnormal loads need to be calculated in advance. Send us the dimensions and weight of the load, and we will pick a truck type that crosses without extra charges where possible.
King Fahd Causeway toll for trucks
The causeway toll is charged by vehicle type and weight, and at Gulf International Shipping it is built into our price from the start, so nothing is added at the causeway. The only additions, when due, are what Bahraini customs levy on the goods themselves: 5% customs duty on non-GCC goods and 10% VAT on the value including freight and duty. These are paid to Bahrain Customs, not to the shipping company.
How long do trucks wait on the King Fahd Causeway?
The authority does not publish set operating hours for trucks, and the causeway runs every day, but waiting time varies with the day and season. It usually rises at weekends, public holidays and peak seasons, when the causeway fills with travellers, and it can be affected by any emergency in which both sides decide on precautionary measures. So we check the average crossing time before departure and bring the loading forward or back so the slot falls at a quieter time.
Waits are not equal for every load either. A shared truck carrying several families’ furniture needs several files cleared, and a personal shipment may be inspected, whereas a full truck for one commercial customer with complete data usually passes faster. That is why we give you transit times as a range rather than a single figure.
Common mistakes about crossings and systems on the Bahrain route
Three errors that keep appearing on shipping pages
First, naming the “Salwa crossing” on the Bahrain route; Salwa is the Saudi border with Qatar, not Bahrain. Second, giving Bahrain’s customs system a wrong name. Third, saying the Saudi side runs on “Bayan”, when the platform in use today is Fasah. There is one road into Bahrain, the King Fahd Causeway, and a company that gets the crossing wrong usually gets the transit time wrong too.
We would add a fourth mistake that customers make themselves: assuming Bahrain, like Kuwait and Qatar, has no VAT. Bahrain charges 10% on imports, and it is assessed on the island, not after delivery.
From your city to the causeway: how long until it reaches your door?
Because the causeway is the only way in, every Saudi city’s transit time starts with its distance to Khobar. Distances are approximate, varying with the route and pickup point:
Every origin has its own guide: the closest to the causeway in land freight from Dammam to Bahrain, the capital in shipping company from Riyadh to Bahrain, the west coast in shipping company from Jeddah to Bahrain, the Qassim road in shipping from Madinah to Bahrain, and the longest haul in shipping from Tabuk to Bahrain.
Cars on the causeway: final export or temporary entry?
A car carried on a transporter crosses differently from a car driven by its owner. If it will be registered in Bahrain, it leaves the Kingdom for good: its fines are settled first, the traffic department issues the export certificate and plates, and the export declaration goes in on Fasah. To register it in Bahrain, the traffic directorate wants any one of the final export certificate, the customs certificate or the detailed report, alongside twelve months of insurance and a passed technical inspection. Bahrain admits cars no older than 10 years, charges 5% duty then 10% VAT, and normally requires left-hand drive and GCC specification.
If the car will return to the Kingdom, it crosses on temporary entry with valid registration, a periodic inspection and insurance for Bahrain. Our sedan shipping starts at SAR 780 on a multi-car carrier and SAR 1,100 on a private flatbed, SUVs at SAR 1,190 and luxury cars in an enclosed transporter at SAR 1,840. Anyone moving a car will find the whole process in car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain.
What do Bahraini customs check on the island?
On the Bahraini half of the island the load is matched against its data and charges are assessed. Goods made in Saudi Arabia or another Gulf state pay no duty when a GCC origin certificate travels with them. Someone settling in Bahrain pays nothing on used furniture that crosses before they have completed six months there, provided they hold current residence, a CPR card and a contents list, though these loads are inspected. New non-GCC items pay 5% duty and 10% VAT. The conditions are set out in Bahrain used household goods customs.
Bahrain also bans specific items, chiefly narcotics, used and retreaded tyres, remote-controlled model aircraft, toy guns that fire projectiles, asbestos, ivory and publications contrary to public morals. Medicines, meat and wireless equipment are restricted. A single such item can hold the whole truck on the island, so ask us before packing.
Shipping prices over the King Fahd Causeway to Bahrain
Our price covers the trip from your door to the receiver’s, causeway toll included, and starts lower than what other carriers advertise on this road. Each cell gives two prices, where we begin and where the market usually ends up:
Note: the quickest road loads are Eastern Province ones, which cross on their loading day; Riyadh follows at a day or two, the Hejaz cities and Madinah at three to five working days, and Tabuk, the slowest, at four to six; air delivers in a day or two.
- Consolidated cargo per kg: from SAR 9.2 per kg, and goods by the tonne: from SAR 1,650.
- Parcel by weight: from SAR 60, and a carton or bag up to 20 kg: from SAR 138.
- Small household load up to 500 kg: from SAR 1,100, and a large house in a closed trailer: from SAR 3,220.
- Customs clearance: included in the package by shipment type; ask for your price on WhatsApp.

Air freight: when you do not need the causeway
Flights into Bahrain International Airport carry cargo as schedules allow, and our air rate starts at SAR 13.8 a kilo. The plane covers Riyadh–Bahrain in roughly an hour and a quarter and Jeddah–Bahrain in about two hours ten, Madinah and Taif have listed flights too, and delivery takes one to two days depending on the flight and clearance. Air suits original documents, urgent spare parts, samples and light personal items from distant cities.
From Dammam and Khobar, though, air does not beat the causeway: a truck reaches Manama within hours and is the fastest option for urgent loads from the Eastern Province. From Jeddah or Tabuk you can combine the two: heavy items by road over the causeway, light urgent ones by air. Road and air are compared in figures in air freight from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain.
Is the sea an alternative to the causeway?
Container vessels do sail between Dammam’s King Abdulaziz Port and Bahrain’s Khalifa Bin Salman Port, a link built for large commercial boxes. It saves nothing for household furniture, a car or cartons, because the causeway delivers them within hours without port and handling charges. We therefore offer it on request for commercial containers only.
How we prepare your shipment for the crossing

- 1Define the load
We take the type of shipment, its approximate weight and dimensions, and choose a truck that fits the causeway limits. - 2Prepare the cargo papers
Inventory, or invoice and certificate of origin, or car export papers, depending on the shipment. - 3Weigh and distribute
We weigh the load and spread it over the axles before departure, so there are no overweight charges or refusals. - 4Book both Fasah slots
One for Saudi customs and one for Bahraini customs, timed to the truck’s arrival in Khobar. - 5Driver papers and insurance
We check the driver’s passport, authorisation, registration and licence, and the truck’s Bahrain insurance. - 6Crossing and clearance
We follow the truck on the island, repack anything opened at inspection and tell you of any charges due. - 7Delivery
From Al Jasra to your door in any Bahraini governorate, with unloading and assembly.
The clearance office in Khobar is the last stop before the causeway, where the papers get their final check. The more of that check is done before the truck reaches Al Aziziyah, the shorter its stop on the island.
