Goods shipping from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain with Gulf International Shipping means your cargo is loaded at your factory or warehouse in any Saudi city, cleared on both sides of the King Fahd Causeway, and unloaded at your customer’s warehouse or shop in Bahrain. Commercial loads from Dammam, Jubail and Al-Ahsa are usually at the consignee’s dock on loading day or the morning after, loads from Riyadh and Qassim within 24–48 hours, and cargo from Jeddah and the Hejaz within 3–5 working days. Our rates open at SAR 9.2 per kg for consolidated freight, SAR 780 for a part load (LTL), SAR 1,010 for a pallet of up to 500 kg and SAR 2,300 for a full truckload (FTL).
This page is for manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers and online stores selling into the Bahraini market. It covers what most freight pages skip: the truck weight limits on the causeway and the fines for exceeding them, when Saudi goods enter without customs duty, how Bahrain’s VAT is worked out, and which documents customs wants from the exporter and the importer.
In short
- Crossing: the King Fahd Causeway is the sole road into Bahrain, and every truck needs two Fasah bookings: Saudi exit and Bahraini entry
- Transit time: Dammam and Jubail loads are unloaded the same day or next morning · Riyadh one to two days · the western cities need 3 to 5 working days · Tabuk, the longest run, about 4–6 days
- Starting rates: SAR 9.2 per kg · light goods from Jeddah SAR 184 per m³ · part load SAR 780 · pallet SAR 1,010 · full truck SAR 2,300
- Charges in Bahrain: zero duty when Saudi manufacture is proven by an origin certificate, 5% duty otherwise for foreign-made stock, plus 10% VAT where the product is taxable
- Weight on the causeway: every truck has a permitted gross weight set by its axles, and each tonne above it costs SAR 300
- Air freight: for samples and urgent parts, from SAR 13.8 per kg within 24–48 hours

How much can a truck carry over the King Fahd Causeway?
Before you ask about price, ask about weight. The King Fahd Causeway Authority sets a permitted gross weight for every truck according to its number of axles, plus an absolute maximum beyond which it will not cross. Anything between the two crosses, but with a fine. This is the official table on the Authority’s trucks page:
The penalty arithmetic is simple: an overloaded axle costs the carrier SAR 300, and the same again for every tonne above the permitted total, with any fraction of a tonne counted as a full one. Dimensions carry fees too. A truck 23–25 m long pays SAR 500, 25–30 m pays SAR 1,000, and anything over 30 m pays SAR 2,000. A width of 3–4 m adds SAR 500, and 4–4.85 m adds SAR 1,000. A height of 4.5–5 m costs SAR 500, and 5–5.45 m costs SAR 1,000. The Authority may also turn away any truck above the maximum.
What this means for your cargo
If you ship steel, cement, bottled water or canned food, the truck runs out of weight long before it runs out of space. We then calculate the weight precisely and split it across two trucks where needed, because just two extra tonnes add at least SAR 600 and can stop the truck at the weighbridge. Light cartons such as clothing or plastics fill by volume instead, and are priced per cubic metre.
Approximate prices for goods shipping from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain
Gulf International Shipping’s freight rates are set below those published by other carriers on this lane, and include loading, transport and the causeway crossing fee. The table shows the lowest rate each category starts at and the level it usually reaches when the load is heavy or the origin is far away:
Note: loads from Dammam, Jubail and Al-Ahsa are delivered on the day of loading or the next day, Riyadh cargo within 24–48 hours, and Hejaz cargo within 3–5 working days, plus clearance time on each side depending on how complete the documents are.
Starting rates by loading city
Each city has its own rates because the distances differ so much: By road, Manama is roughly 70–90 km from Dammam and 450–500 km from Riyadh, while Jeddah (1,350–1,400 km) and Tabuk (1,650–1,700 km) sit at the far end of the map. The main items per city:

Do Saudi goods pay duty and VAT in Bahrain?
This is where Bahrain differs from some of its neighbours: it levies both customs duty and VAT, each with its own rule.
- Customs duty: 5% on most goods from outside the GCC. Products of Saudi or other GCC origin enter without customs duty when a valid GCC certificate of origin travels with them.
- Goods previously imported into Saudi Arabia: if the duty was paid when they entered the Kingdom, they are not charged again in Bahrain once the importer shows the paperwork from the GCC port where the goods first landed; GCC customs settle this between themselves through the clearing (muqassa) system.
- VAT: 10% on the value of taxable goods including freight, insurance and duty. Some goods, such as basic foodstuffs, are zero-rated, and your broker confirms the rate that applies to your product.
A worked example shows the difference. Chinese-made goods worth SAR 1,000 with freight, whose duty was never paid in the Kingdom, pick up SAR 50 of duty in Bahrain; VAT is then charged on SAR 1,050, giving SAR 105, so the total comes to SAR 155. The same value of a Saudi-made product with a certificate of origin skips the SAR 50, with VAT depending on the product. That is why we ask for the certificate of origin before loading: it is the cheapest paper in the whole shipment and the one that saves the most.
Customs clearance
We handle clearance on the Saudi side through Fasah and on the Bahraini side through a licensed broker, priced by the type of goods and the number of invoice lines. Ask for a quote with the freight, or read about our customs clearance service.
Documents required for goods shipping to Bahrain
Most commercial trucks held at the causeway are held for one missing page or an invoice at odds with what is actually on the truck. We go through this list with you before the doors close:
The truck has its own papers too: a passport and valid licence for whoever drives, the vehicle’s registration card, a notarised authorisation from its owner, and an insurance policy covering the truck while it is in Bahrain, which we issue electronically before the trip. Those are our responsibility, not yours, but it helps to know that a carrier without them can leave your goods stranded at the border.
Pallet, part load or full truck?
The shipping method changes the price more than anything else. These are the four methods we use for traders on the Bahrain lane:
Consolidated freight by kg or cubic metre
For anyone sending a few cartons, samples or small orders to a customer in Bahrain. Your goods are grouped with other traders’ cargo at our Dammam or Riyadh warehouse and charged per kg from SAR 9.2 or per cubic metre, whichever is greater. It is the cheapest method, but it waits until the load is complete.
Pallets and part loads (LTL)
A pallet weighing up to 500 kg starts from SAR 1,010, and a part load from Riyadh from SAR 780. This suits a distributor sending a regular weekly order to a shop or supermarket in Bahrain without needing a whole truck. We ask that pallets are stretch-wrapped and strapped, and kept to a height that allows another pallet on top if they are strong enough to take it.
Full truckload (FTL)
Booking a whole trailer out of Riyadh costs from SAR 2,300, and it heads for the causeway straight from your dock without detouring through a consolidation warehouse. It suits factories, wholesalers and building materials, and cuts handling to one loading and one unloading.

Containers and the sea option
For large, regular volumes a container can be loaded onto a truck and taken over the causeway; a 20 ft container from Tabuk starts from SAR 5,520. For companies that prefer the sea, containers also sail from Dammam port to Bahrain’s Khalifa Bin Salman Port, and we book that option on request, while road stays faster for ordinary loads.
Shipping dates, food and chilled goods to Bahrain
Saudi dates are among the most common exports to Bahrain, along with coffee, spices, sweets, honey and dairy products. We split them into two groups. Dry and packaged food travels in an ordinary closed truck, with small quantities from Jeddah starting at SAR 276. Food that needs a set temperature, such as dairy, fresh dates and frozen goods, goes in a refrigerated truck, with a small load from Tabuk starting at SAR 2,760.
Meat and poultry need a health certificate and a halal certificate to enter Bahrain, and food in general must carry a clear label with production and expiry dates and ingredients. From Riyadh and Qassim we recommend that refrigerated trucks set off in the evening so they reach the causeway in the morning before the queues, keeping the time spent standing in the heat to a minimum.
Building materials, equipment and machinery
Construction projects in Bahrain import steel, tiles, sanitary ware, paint and cable from the Kingdom. These goods are heavy, so weight rather than volume sets the price and the number of trucks. Heavy equipment from Jeddah starts from SAR 1,840, and industrial equipment up to one tonne from Tabuk from SAR 4,600. For machinery whose length, width or height exceeds the causeway limits, we calculate the dimension fees in advance and arrange a suitable truck; a special permit may also be needed.
Paints, chemicals and flammable materials have their own transport classification. They are never mixed with other goods on a consolidated truck and may need an environmental permit, so tell us exactly what they are before we quote.
For online stores selling to customers in Bahrain
If you run an online store in Saudi Arabia and receive orders from Manama, Muharraq and Riffa, you have two options. The first is to send each order on its own as a parcel, which suits low volumes; rates are on our cartons and parcels shipping to Bahrain page. The second is to send a batch of stock each week as consolidated freight to a warehouse in Bahrain and distribute it locally. The second option brings the cost per order down sharply as volumes grow, but it needs an importer registered in Bahrain.
Prohibited and restricted goods for traders in Bahrain
These are the main goods barred from entry under Bahrain Customs rules, and some catch traders out because they are allowed elsewhere:
- Used and retreaded tyres: banned, so they cannot travel with used car parts.
- Asbestos and asbestos products: banned, which matters to dealers in older building materials.
- Radio-controlled aircraft and models: banned, along with toy guns that shoot projectiles.
- Cultured pearls: banned in Bahrain, as are ivory and rhino horn.
- Cannabis products, CBD oil and narcotics: banned in every form.
- Offending publications: anything contrary to religion or public morals, or seditious material.
Restricted goods that enter under conditions include medicines (through a licensed importer with Ministry of Health approval, and normally registered in two GCC states including Saudi Arabia), meat and poultry (which need both a veterinary health certificate and a halal certificate), and wireless communication equipment. We check any unclear product with you before booking.
Air freight for urgent goods to Bahrain
For samples, urgent spare parts and trade documents, we fly cargo into Bahrain International Airport at rates beginning at SAR 13.8 a kilo, and it typically reaches your customer’s door a day or two later once clearance is included. Riyadh–Bahrain flights take around 1 h 15 min and Jeddah–Bahrain flights about 2 h 10 min, with space confirmed at booking according to the available schedule. From Dammam, Khobar and Jubail, though, a truck over the causeway beats any flight and reaches Manama within hours. Our air page has the detail: air freight from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain.
Delivery to Bahrain’s industrial areas and warehouses
We deliver commercial cargo to the warehouse dock or the shop door in every governorate of Bahrain. The destinations traders use most:
- Salman Industrial City, Hidd: large factories and warehouses near the ports.
- Sitra industrial area: distribution warehouses and building materials.
- Manama, Seef and Adliya: shops, showrooms and offices.
- Muharraq and Busaiteen: retail outlets and restaurants.
- Riffa, Isa Town and Hamad Town: markets and supermarkets.
Large warehouses need a fixed unloading slot and a forklift at the dock; for shops inside town we arrange a smaller truck for narrow streets if needed. Tell us how your customer can unload before we ship.

How is the cost of your commercial shipment worked out?
The final price has five parts: weight or volume (whichever is greater), the method (consolidated or full), the loading city, the type of goods (general, chilled, hazardous or heavy), and extras such as palletising, clearance, insurance and unloading. The causeway crossing fee is included in our rate.
An example: a Riyadh distributor sends 3 pallets of cleaning products at 400 kg each, 1.2 tonnes in total. Priced per tonne from SAR 1,650, the approximate cost is about SAR 1,980. With 8 pallets, a full truck from SAR 2,300 works out cheaper than paying per tonne, which is why we compare both methods before you book.
Mistakes that stop a commercial truck at Bahrain customs
- A commercial invoice whose quantities differ from the cartons actually loaded.
- Leaving out the origin certificate and paying 5% on goods that were made in the Kingdom.
- Loading above the permitted weight and paying SAR 300 for every extra tonne.
- Shipping used tyres or remote-controlled toys without knowing they are banned.
- Sending food without production and expiry labels, or meat without a halal certificate.
- An importer in Bahrain with no commercial registration to receive the consignment.
