Saudi car shipping to Kuwait

Car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Kuwait runs overland: car carriers and flatbeds cross at Khafji or Ruqai, and your car reaches Kuwait one to six days later, depending on the starting city. Gulf International Shipping collects from the owner’s door in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Madinah, Makkah, Tabuk and Taif, prepares the Saudi export paperwork, and delivers to any Kuwaiti governorate. Gulf International Shipping charges from SAR 1,100 to move a sedan with other cars on a shared carrier out of Riyadh or the Eastern Province, from SAR 1,840 for an SUV on a hydraulic flatbed, and from SAR 3,220 for a luxury car inside an enclosed carrier.

Before asking about price, ask a more important question: can my car enter Kuwait at all? Plenty of jobs stall at the border because the car is older than the limit or its export papers are incomplete. So this guide follows the decisions you make in order: Kuwait’s acceptance rules first, then the carrier and the price, then the paperwork on both sides, then loading day and delivery.

Quick answer

  • Car age: at most 10 years past the manufacture year, and younger cars clear faster
  • Crossings: Khafji → Nuwaiseeb for Eastern Province cars; Ruqai → Salmi for Riyadh, Qassim and the western cities
  • Transit: 1–2 days out of Dammam, 2–3 out of Riyadh, 3–5 working days out of the western cities, roughly 4–6 out of Tabuk
  • Prices: sedans from SAR 1,100, SUVs from SAR 1,840, luxury cars from SAR 3,220, VIP enclosed carrier from SAR 4,140
  • Charges in Kuwait: 5% customs duty on the car’s value and no VAT
  • Not accepted: right-hand drive, rebuilt vehicles, flood-damaged or heavily crashed cars
  • Air freight: for spare keys, papers and urgent parts; the car itself travels by road

Will Kuwait accept your car? Check before shipping

These are the checks we run with each customer before reserving carrier space. If any answer is unclear, it is better to stop and check, because a car refused at the border comes back at the owner’s expense.

RequirementWhat Kuwait asks forWhat to do before shipping
Car ageNo more than 10 years from manufacture; the minister can grant exceptionsCheck the manufacture year on the registration card, not just the model year
Steering sideLeft-hand drive only; right-hand drive is not acceptedCheck whether the car was imported from a drive-on-the-left country
ConditionNo rebuilt vehicles, none with flood damage, none with major crash damageHave the periodic inspection report and any accident history ready
ConformityCustoms inspection and VIN check, then a technical inspection before registrationClean the VIN plate so it reads clearly
Importer statusProcedures differ with the importer’s status and purpose of importConfirm you can register the car in your own name in Kuwait before exporting

On age specifically: some pages still say the limit is 5 years, which is out of date. The amended Kuwaiti Ministry of Commerce decision bans importing cars that are 10 years past their manufacture, and the official US trade guide to Kuwait lists the same rule among prohibited imports. Even so, newer cars go through more smoothly, and an older classic car needs special prior approval whose outcome nobody can promise, so we do not ship one until that approval is issued.

Do not rely on the seller’s word

If you bought the car to export to Kuwait, ask for a copy of the registration card before paying and check the manufacture year and steering side. A car refused at Salmi or Nuwaiseeb returns to Saudi Arabia and you pay for the road twice.

Car shipping costs from Saudi Arabia to Kuwait

At Gulf International Shipping the price depends on three things: the type of carrier, the size of the car and the city we load from. The table below brings together starting rates across the Kingdom; each row starts with the entry price for the smallest car in that class and ends with what a bigger car or a special request typically reaches. All our rates sit below what competing carriers publish for the same service.

Note: with export papers complete, the road takes a car 1–2 days from the Eastern Province and 2–3 days from the capital, while Jeddah, Makkah, Madinah and Taif need 3–5 working days.

Prices by pickup city

The distance to Kuwait from Dammam and from Jeddah is very different, and so are the rates. Here is where a sedan and an SUV start from each region:

The rate does not include Kuwaiti customs duty (5% of the car’s value) or Kuwaiti registration fees, since those are paid to the authorities directly. Clearance charges are set before loading as part of the package. To compare car rates with furniture and parcel rates from each city, see shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Kuwait.

Open carrier, flatbed or enclosed carrier?

An open shared carrier loads several cars across an upper and a lower deck. It is the cheapest option and suits everyday family cars, but it waits for a full load, so it can leave a day later. A hydraulic flatbed lowers its deck to the ground so the car rolls on without a steep angle, which suits low and modified cars. With a private flatbed, yours is the only car aboard, and it departs when you choose. An enclosed carrier is a locked box that shields the car from dust, sun and gravel all the way, and most owners of luxury, sports and classic models pick it.

Shared carrier

The cheapest, from SAR 1,100 for a sedan from Riyadh and the Eastern Province; suits everyday cars.

Hydraulic flatbed

No steep loading angle, from SAR 1,660; suits low and modified cars.

Private flatbed

Your car alone, on your schedule, from SAR 2,300.

Enclosed carrier

Full protection from dust and gravel, from SAR 3,220.

Securing cars for the Kuwait road
Ratchet straps tighten over the wheels of a covered car on a transport deck before it leaves for Kuwait

Whatever the carrier, each wheel is held by a net strap tightened with a ratchet, the car is covered with a protective cover where needed, and the tension is checked again before the long drive. On the Hafar Al-Batin desert road in particular, gravel and sand get thrown up, so we recommend an enclosed carrier for any car whose paintwork matters to its owner.

Export papers for a car leaving Saudi Arabia

A car leaving Saudi Arabia for good does not cross on its registration card alone. These are the papers and steps we help you prepare:

  • Traffic export certificate: issued after an online request, together with special export plates.
  • Clearance of fines: every traffic violation on the car and the owner must be settled.
  • Owner’s ID or iqama and a valid registration card (istimara).
  • Electronic authorisation via Absher for whoever handles the process if the owner is not present.
  • Export declaration on Fasah with the chassis number matching the actual car.
  • Bank release letter if the car is financed or mortgaged.

Once the papers are complete, we book the crossing appointment on Fasah before the carrier reaches Khafji or Ruqai, as ZATCA requires for every land transport vehicle. Arriving on the booked slot saves hours of waiting.

Final export or temporary entry?

If you are moving to Kuwait or have sold the car to a buyer there, it is a final export with the papers above. If you will use the car in Kuwait for a limited period and bring it back, there is the temporary-entry route: valid registration and periodic inspection, a customs transit document (triptyque), and insurance that covers driving in Kuwait. In that case no export plates are fitted and the car returns on its Saudi plates.

What happens when the car enters Kuwait?

At Salmi or Nuwaiseeb the export papers go to Kuwaiti customs, the car is inspected and the VIN checked. Duty is charged at 5% on the car’s value plus freight, and Kuwait levies no VAT. If the car first entered the GCC within the last two years and duty was paid then, that duty may be offset through GCC clearing; we confirm it with the clearing agent before shipping.

After customs release the car goes through a technical inspection and is then registered with the General Traffic Department of Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior to receive Kuwaiti plates. Depending on the car, an import permit from the Ministry of Commerce and a conformity certificate from the Public Authority for Industry may be requested. As long as the car is within the age limit, issuing the permit is routine; older cars need prior approval.

Customs duty: a worked example

A car worth SAR 40,000 including freight pays 5% Kuwaiti customs duty, about SAR 2,000, with no VAT on top. This is paid to Kuwait Customs and is not part of the transport fee.

Preparing the car for loading day

  • Leave about a quarter tank of fuel: enough to move the car, with less weight and risk.
  • Charge an electric car’s battery to between 30% and 50%, neither full nor empty.
  • Remove all personal items from the cabin and boot; the car is inspected empty.
  • Video the car from every side before loading; we photograph it too and write its condition on the collection sheet.
  • Tell us about any warning light or starting fault so we choose the right loading method.
  • Hand over one key with the car and keep the spare, or send it with us in a documented envelope.

The road your car takes, by city

Cars from Dammam, Khobar, Jubail and Al-Ahsa follow the Abu Hadriyah coast road up to Khafji and cross into Nuwaiseeb in the Ahmadi area, the shortest route, covered in land freight from Dammam to Kuwait. Riyadh cars take the Majmaah road to Hafar Al-Batin and the Ruqai crossing, entering at Salmi in Jahra Governorate, as described in shipping from Riyadh to Kuwait. Cars from Jeddah, Makkah and Taif usually travel up through Qassim to Hafar Al-Batin and Ruqai, Madinah cars through Qassim, and Tabuk cars usually through Hail and then Hafar Al-Batin. This avoids congested Riyadh and shortens the trip for the western cities.

Western car going to southern Kuwait?

If a car from Jeddah is being delivered in Ahmadi or Wafra, we may consolidate it in Dammam with other cars and cross at Khafji. We tell you the faster option at booking.

Air freight and your car

The car itself is not normally flown to Kuwait, because the cost of a plane far outweighs the time saved on a road trip of a few days. Air freight is useful for what goes with the car: the spare key, original papers the receiver needs in Kuwait, or an urgent spare part. Flying time is roughly 80 minutes from Riyadh, an hour from Dammam and two hours from Jeddah; Madinah and Taif have flights to Kuwait too.

Flights into Kuwait operate on their current timetables, so we reserve space and confirm the departure when you order; delivery to the receiver usually follows within 24–72 hours, depending on available flights. Pricing depends on weight and size, so WhatsApp 0568829975 for a figure. For heavy urgent parts we can fly them to Dammam and truck them on through Khafji. Shipping motorcycles and classic cars

A motorcycle travels on a fixed stand inside an enclosed carrier or with household furniture in the same truck, and it needs export papers just like a car. It is priced by size and weight, so ask for a quote before booking. A classic car travels only in an enclosed carrier, after Kuwait’s prior import approval is issued, since it is usually beyond the age limit.

Delivery in Kuwait

We deliver the car to the door of your home, villa or showroom in any governorate: the Capital and Shuwaikh, Hawalli, Salmiya and Jabriya, Farwaniya, Ahmadi, Fahaheel, Mangaf and Sabah Al-Ahmad City, Jahra, and Mubarak Al-Kabeer. We unload in front of you, lift off the protective cover and go through the condition sheet written at loading before you sign for it.

Mistakes that cost car owners shipping to Kuwait

  • Going by model year instead of manufacture year: Kuwait counts age from manufacture.
  • Leaving fines unpaid: the export certificate will not be issued and the date slips by days.
  • Shipping a financed car without the bank letter: the export cannot be completed.
  • Filling the car with belongings: it delays inspection and the border may refuse it.
  • Choosing an open carrier for a luxury car: gravel on the desert road can chip the paint.
  • Skipping insurance: the car’s value justifies cover for the road, which can be added at booking.
