How much does it cost to ship a carton to Jordan?

The price of a carton depends on the city you ship from, because the distance to the Jordanian border varies a lot: Tabuk is about 450 km from Amman, while Riyadh, Dammam and Jeddah are more than 1,500 km away. So Gulf International Shipping uses two price tables: one for the distant cities (Riyadh, Dammam, Jeddah, Makkah, Taif and the rest of the Kingdom) and one for Tabuk and Madinah, which are close to the Halat Ammar crossing. All our prices are 5–10% below the lowest figure competitors advertise.

Note: cartons usually arrive by road in 3 to 6 working days depending on the sending city, the Jordanian city and customs clearance; air parcels take 24 to 48 hours.

The first number in each range is our “from” price and the second is the usual upper end of the market. A carton at the top of the range is typically very large or heavy, or bound for a city off the main distribution route. Air freight has no fixed published per-kilo rate; send the weight and dimensions on WhatsApp 0568829975 for today’s price. For a full comparison across every type of shipment, see shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Jordan.

Is a carton priced by weight or by size?

On shared road freight a carton is normally priced per piece when it is a standard size and weight, and per kilo when there is a lot of it or it is heavy. But a truck fills up by volume before it fills up by weight. A carton of pillows is light but takes up a lot of room; a small carton of books is heavy but hardly takes any space. That is why an oversized, light carton may be charged as two.

By air the rule is clearer: you pay on actual weight or volumetric weight, whichever is higher. Volumetric weight is usually worked out by multiplying length × width × height in centimetres and dividing by 6,000. For example, a 60 × 40 × 40 cm carton is 96,000 cm³, so its volumetric weight is 16 kg even if it actually weighs only 8 kg. That is why light, bulky clothing should only fly when it really has to.

How to pay less per carton

Use medium cartons rather than very large ones, fill them to the top with no gaps, and compress clothes in vacuum bags. Two full cartons always cost less than three half-empty ones.

Which carton sizes to use, and what goes in each

Carton sizeBest forTip
Small (up to about 40 cm)Books, crockery, heavy tools, shoesNever put books in a big carton; it gets too heavy and the bottom gives way
Medium (about 50–60 cm)Folded clothes, children’s toys, light kitchenwareThe most economical size on shared freight
Large (60 cm and up)Blankets, pillows, winter clothesLight items only, and avoid it for air freight
SuitcaseEveryday clothes and personal thingsWrap in stretch film and lock with a small padlock
Wooden crateOrnaments, valuable glass and delicate devicesPrepared on request for extra protection

The simple rule: heavy things in small boxes, light things in big ones. No single carton should weigh more than one person can lift safely, because cartons are lifted by hand several times between loading, unloading and any customs inspection.

How should you pack a carton before shipping it to Jordan?

A carton goes on a long journey: loading in your city, stacking in a truck with other shipments, possible inspection at the border, then unloading and distribution in Jordan. Good packing is what makes it arrive the way you sent it.

  • Choose a double-wall carton, new if possible; used supermarket boxes weaken with humidity and stacking.
  • Tape the bottom with wide tape in an H pattern, and do the same on the lid once it is closed.
  • Wrap glass and crockery piece by piece in paper and then bubble wrap, and stand plates on their edge rather than flat.
  • Fill the gaps with crumpled paper or clothes so nothing moves inside.
  • Keep liquids separate in sealed bags inside their own carton, with caps taped shut.
  • Label the carton with the recipient’s name, Jordanian phone number and city, a serial number (1 of 6, 2 of 6…), and “fragile” where needed.

If you lack the time or materials, the Gulf International Shipping team can pack at your home for an agreed fee based on the number of cartons. We draw up the contents list with you as we pack, so it matches what is actually in each box.

Shipping suitcases and personal belongings to Jordan

Many students and workers need to send extra suitcases that their flight allowance will not cover, or send their things ahead before they travel. Shared road freight costs far less than excess baggage at the airport, and the luggage arrives straight at the address. From Tabuk and Madinah a suitcase up to 30 kg starts from SAR 100; from cities further away it is charged by the kilo from SAR 9, or as a carton.

Before sending, empty the outside pockets, wrap the case in stretch film and lock it with a small padlock, leaving the key or code with the recipient because customs may ask to open it. Do not put passports, cash, gold or medicine you need every day in the case; those stay with you.

Cartons by road: route and transit time

Cartons from several customers are consolidated into one truck bound for Jordan, which is why they are so cheap to send. From Riyadh, Dammam and Qassim, trucks normally head for the Al-Haditha crossing in Qurayyat, opposite Jordan’s Al-Omari border centre. From Tabuk and the western region (Madinah, Makkah, Jeddah and Taif), the natural route is the Halat Ammar crossing in the Tabuk region into Jordan’s Mudawwara centre, although a shipment may go via Al-Haditha depending on the consolidated load.

Sending cityApproximate distance to AmmanDoor-to-door road transit

MadinahAbout 1,100 km3–5 working days

RiyadhMore than 1,500 km via Al-Haditha3–6 working days
TaifAbout 1,600 km3–6 working days
Dammam and KhobarMore than 1,600 km3–6 working days

Distances are approximate and change with the road and crossing. Transit times include waiting for the shared truck to fill, which makes cartons slightly slower than a private truck. For full details of routes and crossings, see land freight from Saudi Arabia to Jordan.

Air freight for parcels from Saudi Arabia to Amman

For small, urgent parcels such as documents, light gifts, prescribed medicine and small spare parts, air is the quick lane: parcels land at Queen Alia International Airport in Amman 24–48 hours after the airline takes them, then go out for delivery inside Jordan. Air suits parcels whose volumetric weight is lower than or close to their actual weight; big, light cartons become expensive by air because of volumetric weight.

Do not send concentrated perfumes, aerosols, loose batteries or flammable liquids by air, as airlines restrict them. The price depends on weight and size; ask for your quote on WhatsApp 0568829975. For more detail, read air freight from Saudi Arabia to Jordan.

What can’t you put in cartons shipped to Jordan?

  • Weapons, ammunition and their parts, and fireworks.
  • Narcotics and psychotropic substances, and medicines without a prescription or beyond personal use.
  • Fuel, thinners, alcohol and flammable materials, and gas cylinders.
  • Large loose batteries, and concentrated perfumes by air.
  • Plants, seeds, soil and herbs, which need agricultural permits.
  • Perishable food, meat and cooked meals.
  • Counterfeit goods, plus cash, gold, jewellery and original documents.

One banned carton holds up the whole load

On shared freight, cartons from many customers travel together, and a banned item in one of them can delay inspection of the entire load. If you are unsure about something, ask us before you seal the box.

Jordanian customs on cartons and personal effects

Used personal belongings in reasonable quantities, such as clothes, books and household items, are normally treated as personal effects. New items in commercial quantities, such as dozens of the same product or new appliances in their boxes, may attract customs duty and 16% sales tax, according to usual practice. So do not pack goods for sale into your cartons as personal effects; it delays clearance and exposes you to penalties.

If you are a Jordanian expatriate going home to settle, your cartons and used furniture may be fully exempt under Jordan Customs rules: one year or more abroad, proof that your residence has ended, one exemption every 5 years, and a JOD 10 stamp fee. Details are in our guide to the Jordan expat furniture exemption.

Documents required to ship cartons to Jordan

  • Sender ID: a copy of your national ID or iqama.
  • Recipient details: a copy of their passport or Jordanian ID, phone number and full address.
  • Contents list: a number and a list for each carton, for example “men’s clothes 15 pieces, books 6”.
  • Returning expatriates: proof that residence has ended and an original packing list to claim the exemption.
  • Commercial parcels: a commercial invoice and commercial registration; a certificate of origin may be requested.

The extended list for every kind of shipment is on documents required for shipping to Jordan.

Carton delivery across Jordan

We deliver cartons and parcels to the door in Amman and its districts, Irbid, Zarqa, Russeifa, Ramtha, Mafraq, Salt, Madaba, Jerash, Ajloun, Karak, Tafilah, Ma’an and Aqaba. We call the recipient before arriving to agree a convenient time, because many cartons go to elderly parents or to homes where nobody is in all day.

On delivery, the recipient should count the cartons and check their serial numbers before signing, and photograph any carton with visible outside damage in front of the driver. That small step makes any follow-up much easier.

The cheapest way to ship cartons to Jordan

Shared road freight is by far cheaper than air. To cut costs further, consolidate into fewer, fuller cartons, leave behind cheap things that are easy to buy in Jordan such as cleaning products and everyday groceries, and remember that sending from Tabuk or Madinah costs less because they are close to the border. If several family members have cartons for the same address in Jordan, send them together as one shipment.

Common mistakes when shipping cartons to Jordan

  • Using weak second-hand cartons that collapse under stacking.
  • A big carton full of books that no one can lift, so it gets dragged and splits.
  • Leaving the recipient’s number off the carton, so delivery stalls when they cannot be reached.
  • Packing liquids with clothes without sealing them, so a leak ruins the whole carton.
  • Sending bulky, light cartons by air and being surprised by the volumetric weight.
  • Hiding new items in commercial quantities among the clothes.

What about shipping a car or furniture along with your cartons?

Many customers start with cartons and then decide to ship their car or furniture too. Gulf International Shipping moves a sedan on a shared carrier from SAR 1,100 and an SUV on a private flatbed from SAR 2,050, in line with Jordanian rules that ban electric cars more than 3 years old and salvage-class vehicles.
