Furniture in Makkah’s hillside districts: how do we get it out of alleys and stairways?
Makkah sits among mountains, and many of its older districts climb the slopes: houses built wall to wall, alleys too narrow for a large vehicle, and long stone stairways between the street and the front door. That is what makes moving furniture out of Makkah different from cities in the centre and east of the Kingdom, and why planning before loading day matters more than the truck itself.
In districts such as Jarwal, Al-Misfalah, Rei Thakher, Al-Hindawiyah, Shi’b Amer, Al-Hujun, Al-Malawi, and parts of Al-Zahir and Al-Ka’kiyah, a big truck usually cannot reach the door. Here we work in two stages: a small van or dyna gets as close as it can, the crew carries the wrapped pieces down the stairs to it, and everything is then transferred to the large truck on a wide main road, where it is re-stacked and secured. It takes longer, but it stops scuffed walls and scratched furniture in tight passageways.

In newer districts such as Al-Aziziyah, Al-Awali, Al-Sharaya, Al-Naseem, Al-Shawqiyah, Al-Rusaifah, Al-Utaybiyah, Al-Khalidiyah, Al-Zaidi and Batha Quraish, streets are wider and buildings usually have lifts, so loading goes straight from the building door to the truck. Even so, we always ask about the lift size: large sofas and six-door wardrobes will not fit in small lifts and have to be dismantled or carried down the stairs.
Before loading day in Makkah
Reserve a parking spot outside the building, or ask neighbours to move their cars for the loading hour, and let the building’s caretaker know the time. If you live on an alley, send us a photo of the entrance and stairs taken from the street; one picture saves both of us an hour of guesswork.
How do we pack furniture that has to go down a long stairway?
- Beds and wardrobes are broken down into panels, which are far easier to carry on stairs than whole pieces.
- Panels are wrapped in corrugated card and then stretch film, with card corner guards, because rubbing against stairwell walls is what scratches them most.
- Sofas get padded blankets under the plastic so the wrap does not tear against stone.
- Appliances travel on strapped hand trucks wherever possible and are hand-carried on the steps.
- Cartons are filled so that none is heavier than one person can carry on a stairway; heavy items are split across several cartons.
When should you ship from Makkah? How Hajj and Ramadan affect loading
Makkah has a rhythm no other city shares. In the days before and during Hajj, and in the last ten nights of Ramadan, traffic builds up around the central area and the roads leading to it, and traffic arrangements may restrict trucks on some roads at certain times. Shipping does not stop, but loading in districts near the Haram, such as Ajyad, Al-Aziziyah and Al-Shisha, needs its timing coordinated more carefully.
Our practical advice: if your travel date is flexible, ship before Dhu Al-Qa’dah or about two weeks after the Hajj season ends. If you have to ship during the season, choose an early-morning slot and give us a day or two of leeway on the loading date. We will let you know a day ahead about any traffic arrangement that could affect your district.
For visitors and Umrah pilgrims
If you are in Makkah on a visit or for Umrah and want to send extra luggage or gifts to family in Jordan, shared road freight is the best value, with cartons from SAR 140. We can collect from your hotel or accommodation in coordination with its management.
The road from Makkah to Jordan and transit time
The truck leaves Makkah heading north on the Hijrah Road to Madinah, continues to Tabuk, and then to the Halat Ammar crossing in the Tabuk region, on the old Levant pilgrimage route, which faces Jordan’s Mudawwara border centre; from there it passes Ma’an on the way to Amman. The total is more than 1,500 km by road, depending on the road and crossing. On some shared trips that pick up loads from other regions, the truck may cross at Al-Haditha in Qurayyat into Jordan’s Al-Omari centre instead.

Those stages add up to the usual 3–6 working days door to door. A private truck skips the consolidation wait, so it lands nearer the lower end. To compare with other routes, read our guide to land freight from Saudi Arabia to Jordan.
Car shipping from Makkah to Jordan
Gulf International Shipping moves cars from Makkah to Jordan by road only, never under its own power. Everyday sedans ride an open multi-car carrier starting at SAR 1,100; SUVs that need their own truck go on a private flatbed starting at SAR 2,050; and high-value cars travel inside an enclosed carrier, quoted car by car. Because long carriers cannot enter some Makkah districts, cars are often collected at an agreed point on a main road.
Will Jordan accept your car?
- Electric vehicles: imports are banned if the car is more than 3 years old, counting the clearance year, under the Jordanian rules currently in force.
- Damaged vehicles: cars classed as salvage in their country of origin (fire, flood or total loss) are not accepted.
- Specifications: the car must meet Jordanian specs; Gulf and Saudi specs are accepted.
- Petrol and hybrid: no age limit has been announced under the current rules; fees vary with the engine and value.
To export the car from Saudi Arabia you need the original registration, plate surrender and an export certificate, the sender’s ID and recipient’s passport, settled traffic fines and a customs authorization. For temporary entry without importing, a Triptyk carnet is used. Full details are in our guide to car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Jordan.
Shipping cartons, gifts and personal belongings from Makkah
Many people in Makkah send cartons of clothes, books, prayer rugs, copies of the Quran, dates and gifts to family in Jordan. These go by road on a shared truck, from SAR 140 per carton or SAR 9 per kg. Commercially packed dates in personal quantities ship without trouble; large quantities may be treated as commercial goods that need an invoice and certificate of origin.
Write the recipient’s name and Jordanian phone number and a serial number on every carton, and keep a photo of its contents before you seal it. That makes it easy to match the packing list at customs and protects you if you ever need to ask about a particular carton. Carton sizes, packing and prices from each city are on our carton and parcel shipping to Jordan page.

Is furniture returning from Makkah to Jordan exempt from customs?
In specific cases, yes. Jordan Customs exempts a Jordanian expatriate’s furniture and personal effects from duty if they lived outside Jordan for one year or more and can prove their residence abroad has ended, for example a cancelled iqama, end of service, or a work contract or lease in Jordan. A full exemption is granted once and is not repeated within 5 years for anyone who goes abroad again; after a partial exemption, the remainder is exempt if it arrives within 6 months of the owner. Expect a stamp fee of JOD 10 and roughly two hours at the customs counter.
New appliances are not used furniture
New appliances in sealed boxes are usually not exempt and attract duty plus 16% sales tax. In normal practice, furniture quantities are also expected to match the size of the family.
The full conditions and special cases are explained in our guide to the Jordan expat furniture exemption.
What can’t you ship from Makkah to Jordan?
Delivery to Amman and other Jordanian cities
Makkah cargo reaches every corner of Amman, from Jubeiha and Tla’ Al-Ali to Shmeisani and Abdoun, as well as Irbid, Zarqa, Russeifa, Ramtha, Mafraq, Salt, Madaba, Jerash, Ajloun, Karak, Tafilah, Ma’an and Aqaba. Shipments to Amman, Zarqa and Ma’an typically take 3–5 working days, Irbid, Mafraq and Jerash 4–6 days, and Aqaba 5–7 days depending on the distribution schedule.

Old houses on Amman’s seven hills resemble Makkah’s districts, with their stairs and slopes, so we use the same plan for delivery: we check the floor, lift and where the truck can stop before arriving, carry the wrapped furniture inside, then unwrap and reassemble whatever was agreed.
What raises or lowers the cost of shipping from Makkah?
- Volume: more rooms and pieces mean a higher price; cartons are charged per piece or per kilo.
- Loading in your district: alleys and stairs need a smaller vehicle and extra hands; buildings with lifts load faster.
- Truck: a private truck is faster and dearer; a shared one is cheaper but waits for a full load.
- Season: peak-season bookings need a flexible date, and booking early saves money.
- Jordanian city: Amman and Zarqa are nearer and cheaper than Aqaba and remote areas.
- Customs: exempt furniture carries no duty; new appliances and goods are subject to duty and tax.
The cheapest way to ship from Makkah to Jordan
Shared road freight is always the cheapest. You can lower the bill further by shipping fewer large pieces, packing small items into sturdy cartons instead of sending them loose, and avoiding the Hajj season and the end of the school year. If you only have a few things, paying by the kilo works out better than booking the space of a whole room.
Mistakes we often see when shipping from Makkah to Jordan
- Booking a loading date at the height of the season with no leeway, then running late in traffic.
- Not mentioning an alley or stairway, so a truck arrives that cannot get near the house.
- Shipping new sealed appliances with used furniture and expecting them to be exempt.
- Writing “miscellaneous items” on the packing list instead of what each carton holds.
- Forgetting to settle traffic fines on the car before the export date.
- Putting cash, gold or passports inside cartons.
